Hey everyone! I was wondering if being Pacific Islander (Chamorro) is a hook? Before everyone asks, I am 50% Chamorro so I'm not digging back into my ancestry to find a hook. Some people say yes, others say no. Specifically, I'm wondering about its impact at East Coast LACs.

I've been looking over Common Data Sets and most prestigious schools only have 4 or 5 Pacific Islanders in the ENTIRE university (which is hard for me to believe.... it's less than African-American students) and Amherst has zero.

Any input is greatly appreciated :)

Thanks!

Pacific Islanders are not exactly numerous in the mainland US, particularly on the east coast. Even on the west coast, you won’t exactly find huge numbers (e.g. about 0.6% of undergraduates at San Jose State University).

Going into the Pacific you can find more. University of Hawaii - Manoa undergraduates are about 17% Pacific Islander. University of Guam undergraduates are about 43% Chamorro and 8% other Pacific Islander.

Thanks! So is that a “hook” or classify me as URM? I was shocked when I saw your stats though, I think Stanford has around 35 Pacific Islanders.

Probably depends on the school as to whether it wants to recruit/favor Pacific Islanders.
