Hello, I was just wondering would Pacific Islanders be considered URM? I mean actual Pacific Islander ethnicities(meaning NOT Asian). My father is Samoan and my mother is Fijian. I know that Asians and Pacific Islanders are usually lumped together but I was just curious if I would be considered URM say for instance applying to a college or university that actually distinguishes between Asian and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander in separate categories. And no, I'm not in California, I actually live in a state where I think Polynesians and Melanesians are like almost nonexistent haha. Thanks.

Just don’t worry about it; I don’t think it matters much. (Wouldn’t you want to be admitted on the basis of your qualifications instead of your race anyway?)

The reason I ask is because I heard of some kind of quota on Asians at colleges as an overrepresented minority, but I am Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, in the state where I live NHPI ethnicities are the smallest racial demographic at 0.07% and at my first choice school they make up 0% of the student body. Knowing most of the time Asians and Pacific Islanders are grouped together I was just wondering if my ethnicity would even be worth mentioning to adcoms if they are just going to lump me into the Asian demographic, which I am obviously not, that’s all.

On the Common App, Asian and Pacific Islander are grouped together as one race, meaning there isn’t a way for adcoms to distinguish between the two.
