Hi guys. I would like to go to law school and was wondering if ILR would be better than PAM for me? I initially chose PAM because I am considering an joint MBA JD and am very interested in finance. I would also like to keep my options open and possibly do i-banking/hedge funds... something along those lines; however, it seems as if ILR is most associated with law at Cornell. Is PAM still a good option, and are there any disadvantages? The classes is PAM seem more interesting to me, but if ILR is better for law school, I will consider changing. Thanks guys.

ILR students do tend to be more interesting in law school more than some other majors, however is PAM classes seem more interesting to you, I would stick with that. If you find out after a year that ILR would be a better fit, you can transfer within Cornell. ILR’s curriculum has a lot of different components and not everyone enjoys that.

A lot of ILR students go on to law school, but some from PAM do too, so I wouldn’t worry about that. Pick the major that you think is more interesting to you.

ILR tends to be more law-school oriented, but keep in mind there isn’t really any specific major that corresponds to pre-law. I actually think physics majors overall do best in law school admissions. If you want to do banking, ILR has plenty of graduates that go that route as well. You can’t go wrong with either major for law or banking.

Whenever someone is deciding between two majors that lead to similar opportunities, my suggestion is always to take a look at the curriculums for both and read the course descriptions. Decide which courses appeal more to you and go with that. This exercise shouldn’t take more than 20mins (once you figure out how to navigate Cornell’s Courses of Study).

I know a lot of ILR students go to law school. How common is it for PAM students to study law?

No idea, but when it comes to law school, what matters is your GPA and LSAT score. ILR and PAM will both afford you the opportunity to maintain an high GPA. Go with what interests you.

Loads of ilr core classes just flat out suck and are extremely boring…I would highly recommend PAM. Neither is significantly better than the other for law school or a business career

What’s a little weird to me is that you’re looking to a business career but don’t seem to be considering AEM…?
