Is it better to apply online or by paper? I guess online is more convenient, but paper should be easier to keep track of.
And another thing- if you apply online, can you still send a resume?

Online .

Most colleges say they prefer online, and yes, you can still send a resume.

Will admissions commitees seriously care that much though? Of course if some school waives the fee if i pay online, i'll do it. But its not a disadvantage whatsoever if you send it by mail, is it?

No, it's no disadvantage.

Not a disadvantage if you do the paper application.

I'd be afraid that the post office would lose it... I've watched too many movies with psycho post office workers throwing mail everywhere, and read one too many (okay, just the one, but still) news stories about mail bags found on the sides of roads... I find it hard trust the US postal service with important things like college applications...

Don't let my paranoia deter you, though. Unless you have an unreasonable fear of the post office (see above) there's nothing wrong with sending a paper app, except that it might take a little bit longer to process.

Aww. My parents work for the post office, and they're lovely people.

You can send it certified mail... for a few dollars you can ensure that it'll get there.

We sent college applications by Fed Ex.

I guess it comes down to whether you can fit everything into the online application. If you need more room or want to include supplemental information, you need paper.

If you do use the online application, do it early enough that you can make sure you have a working computer connection and the school processed everything properly. I didn't see this mentioned last year. But the previous year I heard that some people were having problems getting through when they tried to apply on deadline day.

Nothing against post office workers - our mail lady is very nice. I'm just too paranoid :)

I sent an EA app to Harvard on Saturday by FedEx. I just received email confirmation it was delivered this morning.

I called Harvard's placement office on Friday and walked through everything I was sending to make sure I didn't miss anything. I asked about online applications, and the person I was talking to said they simply print off all the online submissions and put them in physical files for the adcom.

If I do it by paper, is it good to write out everything in pen?

Yes -- definitely pen if it's on paper.

One more thing.
If you apply by paper, do they expect you to hand-write every one for the common app, or can you just write one and then photocopy it a bunch of times? If so, do they like it single or double sided?
thanks a lot

For online app, do you have to send the supplement and the common app concurrently?

CommonApp.org will tell you--some are "hand in hand," which means yes, they have to go together, and some aren't. it depends on the college.

LunarChik, thanks for the info

one more thing- for the essays, can we just type it out and then tape/glue it onto the paper?
