Well. Hi. anyway.. im a junior and i am paranoid if i will get into any college i want. ok here is my situation.
i just moved to the states last september. I took 9th grade and 10 th grade in south america, and had a (19/20) 4.0 gpa (good private school). I moved here and this winter semester I had a weighted gpa of 4.0 but unweigthed of 3.7. taking ap calc ab and i got a C in apchemistry the rest is a).
my next semester schedule will be tougher, because they didnt let me take ap history and english honors last semester, some reason about that i had to prove i could do well in cp first), and i will raise my weighted gpa to at least 4.3. my predicted SAT is 2200.
ok anyway... here are my questions
1. How would it look if i took ap spanish ? i mean would colleges notice that i have lived in a spanish speaking country , and am a slacker for taking it just to boost my gpa or would they just see it as someone taking a foreign language
2. has that C in apchem totally killed me :( ?
3. I have no ecs, well sports, and tutoring, but nooone other. i mean in my country there were very little ecs opportunities, im going to do my best to get some before applying. how hard will it affect me
4. how much is being hispanic going to help me ?
anyway. my college list is like this i think

Dream:columbia but i kknow its impossible so ...
Reach
cornell
Uchicago,
gtown,
nyu ,
boston college
match
boston university,
syracuse university,
rochester,
Carnegie mellon
umaryland, college park

still working on them.
help will be appreciated. and btw i just can not believe the decision threads and see the people that get rejected, its just makes my panorama seem gloomy oh well

If you are a US citizen or permanent resident, your list is pretty good already. It's long- you would probably need to drop a couple and also add one or two more safeties. However, if you have to apply as an international, then I am not sure. If you can afford all of these places, you may be all right. Many of them do not admit internationals unless they appear to have the money to pay. You should probably also think about applying to more Maryland schools if you are in-state. If you don't live in Maryland, and can be considered in-state in another state, apply to their better public campuses. No, I would not take AP Spanish. One C in AP Chem is not a disaster- don't worry about it and just try to do better.

Columbia is most definately NOT a pipe dream.

Colleges will understand your circumstances, especially if you dedicated that little box that says "Are there any other cirucmstances that you would like us to know?" to telling them about your new life in the U.S. Considering your situation, you're doing great.

hey. thanks for the replies.
my permanent residency should be granted by the time i apply.
if not (which might be the case )i am aware, that puts me in a even more more more difficult pool, and i dont really have the money to pay it. Unless i get some loans, nyu is big on intl loans etc. in that case i would apply to a lot of LAC that are generous, some universities that are need blind for internationals, etc. i know that the intls admit rates are always under 10 %, etc. However i wonder do i have to be the best from my country, continent, or just the whole pool itself ? what are its quotas?

oh and karot , waht do you mean by my current situation? are you refering to the adaptation of a new country, etc ?

i live in ca, what good safeties do you recommend ?
apart from the UCs and CSUs

oh and if i am given by residency, how would the hispanic urm thing help me ?

and i myself thought that taking ap spanish would not be helpful. my junior year im taking ap history, ap calcab, ap chem, physics, sociology, and english Honors . will colleges care if i dont take 7 periods ? i took 7 this semester, but next semester i can only take 6 because my schedule changed, and the subjects remaining are well just not really constructive.

i think right now my most realistic is NYU and i like it. although i know that getting into stern is harder than getting into nyu overall

je. that is true sars. i was confident of my stats as a qualified student, until i got into this page. once i entered this page i was shocked with the people that applied and got rejected, people that were extraordianary. Thus.. I kinda ehm well got scared to say it like that. I mean if go by what they say on their websites that they accept well rounded individuals that are highly qualified, well i would say i could be one of those individuals, but when you get in here and see the rejects, its just... ahh.
But yeah i am aware, that my stats are good,....but are they good enough ?
