Parent of a 7th Grader

My daughter is in 7th grade at one of the Stem focused public school in Washington. How do I help her prepare to be a college bound student after she graduates from high school? What merit based scholarship should I be looking into make sure she goes to college as little out of pocket as possible. She loves Math and Science.

National Merit is what we need for my 8th grader.

You might have her look into the Caroline D. Bradley scholarship, which provides four years of tuition at a private high school. If she scores above a certain threshold on the SAT in either Math or CR and has high standardized test scores that are administered within her school, she might qualify to apply. Application is open to 7th graders ONLY.

Enjoy your middle schooler.

Chill out. She is only in 7th grade. You really do not need to do anything until September of 10th grade. Tell your kid to go out and play in the sunshine.

Starting early may be an problem but being informed is never bad.

As for preparation, seeing that your child is in a STEM school, there’s no doubt that she is already being prepared (sometimes without knowing it).

PSAT/SAT/ACT:
The main merit based scholarship is from the NMSQT/PSAT.
Don’t start studying now. She can take the PSAT 8/9 in the according grades but it’s just for practice and to see how much studying is required for a top score. I recommend starting that studying in the sophomore year.

Just make sure that she develops good study habits, creates a solid work ethic, and more importantly enjoys her middle school years.

Make sure she reads a lot. I wouldn’t be too hyped out about test prep now. We did Duke Tip for kids in 7th grade and they took the ACT. They thought that was fun b/c a lot of their friends did it. I do think the poster that said wait until September of 10th grade is right, but the freshman guidance counselor at my child’s school has a saying “Begin it to end it.”
