Parent out of state

Hey guys

OK so here's the thing, me and my mo lived i Georgia of the past 4 years and after i graduated high school she moved to California but i am still in college in Georgia. Is there any kind of financial aid or grants i can get, or could i file as an independent student since we don't live together, (I stay on campus). please give me good feedback. my dad is not involved in any of this.
Thanks

I’m quite sure you can’t just file as an independent student for financial aid purposes.

You need to check the residency requirements in for the college you are attending. At SOME universities, if you enroll as a instate student (did you do that?) as a freshman, you remain instate for tuition purposes as long as you are continuously enrolled. I don’t know if that applies to your college or not…you will need to check.

Even IF you gain instate residency for tuition purposes, you will likely still have to report your mom’s income for financial aid purposes. I don’t believe you would be considered independent unless you are over 24, are married, support a dependent child, are an orphan, are or was a ward of the state, or are a veteran.

Yes i applied in state for the college i attend and they do allow me to remain a instate student if im enrolled continuously. Since my mom lives so far away the the cost of living is way different we could really use the extra money and was hoping there was some kind of aid i could get for being in this situation.
Thank you for your reply.
