Parent Plus loan 101 question

So it looks like by the end of next semester (fall 2012) I will need to get a Plus loan to pay my sons tuition as the old 529 will be pretty much dried up.... I did fill out the master prom. Note some time ago, but it is unclear to me how to actually apply for what I need and when I should do it. Do I contact the college fin aid office?

Thanks for any help and suggestions

Yes. Contact the aid office, and tell them you only want the loan for winter term. They will tell you what to do.

When I applied a few years ago it was a s simple as going on line and putting in my name address and social…and I’m not kidding! Pretty scary how much money they were willing to give me with so little knowledge of me.

Because you don’t want a distribution until winter, and you have already signed an MPN, you don’t want to just apply online … the money will pay out automatically if you don’t arrange for a 2nd term disbursement.

Great!

Thank you very much for the help,

I was just attempting to fill out the request for the Parent Plus Loan and I was stumped on the question about the loan dates. Do I want to put start date of August 2012 and end date May 2013? I hate to admit it because it is probably very easy but I really have no clue.

Get a financial aid rep from the college on the phone and have them help you. It’s much smoother when you have someone at the school coordinating with you. There is a time limit as to how long that MPN is valid, so you do have some time constraints. I don’t remember if it is 60 or 90 days.
