I was hoping CC folks could help with a couple of questions from a parent:

My son is moving in early due to participation on an athletic team. Since we (parents) will won't be there during the normal move-in day and orientation, we were wondering if there are any sessions for parents that are recommended. We are local to U of R, a 10-15 minute drive, so returning to campus is not an issue for us.

My son would like to take his bike. He is in Susan B Anthony. Is there any place for him to safely stow it when not in use? Are the rooms big enough? Or should he leave it home?

The convocation is definitely worth seeing. There is a session about advising that’s worth going to so you understand the process. That might include the people who do internships as well. (Very nice people, btw.)

My kid has a bike there. Storage in nice weather is bike racks and there’s one next to SueB. A good quality steel u-lock is recommended. I wouldn’t bring a carbon fiber bike because there are bike thefts on any campus. And bike parts get stolen, so I recommend locking the front up, because it’s detachable, and maybe pulling the seat if it’s easy to remove. Most kids by far just lock it up. You live close but the school will store the bike for free over the winter.

Convocation is worth attending. Also if this is your first child to go away to college, it might be useful to go the parent info session presented about Student Health Services. (Among other things the presenters talk about birth control policies, HIPAA regulations, when they will/will not contact parents, underaged student issues, health insurance and medical billing.)

D2 bought a beater bike off Craig’s List to ride around Rochester as her nice weather transportation instead of bringing her nice Ti-frame to campus. The bike was inexpensive enough if it got stolen, she’ll be p***ed but not devastated.

The bike idea is a great suggestion, instead of bringing an expensive bike. Thanks for the idea.

I have another question, are the small one cup keurig coffee makers allowed? They dont have a hot plate like a normal coffee maker. I would guess not, but would like to hear from others. We bought my daughter one last christmas.

Also, does anyone know if the music practice rooms have secure storage for cellos?

We got the later move in time next Wednesday because we are out of state, noon I believe. It sounds like they have it down to a science and nice to know that there is a lot of help. We have ordered a fridge to pick up at the local Walmart (my daughter is in a single), so I think we are all set.

Last, since this is a parent’s thread, I think it is going to be a tough drive home late next week.

Coffeemakers come under the heading of non-allowed appliances. However if it’s not visible during room inspections…

And make sure the coffeemaker’s cord doesn’t show when she puts it away for breaks. D2 got cited for a fire code violation and had her electric kettle confiscated because although the kettle was in the wardrobe, the cord stuck out under the door and inspectors are allowed to follow any visible electric cords to see what they belong to.
