I am writing an essay for a scholarship at SLU. The prompt is something about your greatest achievement, and I was planning on writing about learning to overcome/deal with my parents' alcoholism and my mom going to rehab. I have a feeling they want something like winning some regional award for math team or something, but I don't have anything in particular that like that in which I feel very passionate about. I feel like this essay would be unique and stand out, but I feel like this may not be the place for this sort of essay. I'm not really sure if this is an appropriate topic. Maybe I'm just afraid to write such a personal essay. Any thoughts?

My d’s friend wrote an essay about her feelings when she discovered her parents smoking pot even though she was vice president of the anti-drug club at school. The GC made her do a different one because she said that schools would be afraid her parents would get arrested and not be able to pay tuition!

I think that writing about dealing with a tough life situation is good but wha do I know.
