Parents at Orientation

Hey everyone. I was wondering if most people's parents end up attending the parent orientation? My mom is unsure whether or not she wants to or needs to go.

Thanks

Both my wife and I are going to our daughter’s orientation at Michigan on July 10th. We also both went to our son’s orientation a few years ago at Western Illinois. There were a TON of parents there and I expect there will be at Michigan. Michigan has an excellent website with a lot of information especially for parents, (and so does little Western Illinois), so you would think you could skip the orientation knowing most info is a mouse click away but I still found it to be very helpful to attend and I was glad I did.

The parent orientation programming is separate from the students and is quite in-depth and very helpful, to my mind, in helping parents prepare to “support” their students while giving appropriate levels of independence. It’s a great opportunity for a parent to prepare for the transition.
You will get to do your own thing, so don’t worry about having your mom in tow. YOU will likely be the one to benefit from her attendance insofar as it helps parents adjust to the new shared responsibilities, etc. IMHO, your mom will enjoy it as well – after all, if your folks are financially supporting part or all of your college career, they should arm themselves with information about their “investment” ;)
