We just dropped dd off at COW. We drove out Thursday, since percussionists in the band arrived on the 17th, with the rest on the 18th.
I am toooo tired to check back if I posted this before - if you dropped your child off early did you return for the parent events when the rest of the freshmen arrived the following week.
more important...
I am not sure if parent weekend runs from Friday evening through Sunday evening, or all day Friday. the website just says Family Weekend 2007 will be October 26-28, and to check back later. We're going to most like buy plane tickets.
We drove dd out on the 16th, horrible traffic on rt 80 right here in NJ - checking the bridges I think. Took us almost 10 hours rather than around 7. ugh. Took around 7.5 hours home. Then we got up in the morning and moved older DD to a new apt. in Queens NY.

Our daughter is a sophomore. We dropped her off early last year (and again this year) because of soccer training. We could not return for parent events later in the week and also missed family weekend because of a conflicts with work and with our other daughter. I felt like such a deadbeat mom, but she seemed OK with it. She said many of the parents simply couldn't make it--too expensive, etc. We did, however, make the 10-hour (round-trip) drive to see a couple of her soccer games. ... It wore me out just reading about your drive from NJ to Wooster and back, then an apartment move-in! Ahhh!

oldinnj, I just read your post. Since we are from NJ too, and this school is on our radar screen, I was not happy to read about the traffic nightmare. I am suprised that is only 7.5 hour drive without traffic. I know that 7.5 hours feels like long enough to sit in the car. I have a 6 hour drive with our older son.

I also want to wish her a wonderful year, and wonderful year to Hindoo's DD too!

NEMom;

Depends on how you drive to Ohio from NJ. Taking Rt 80 can be a royal pain in NJ, it is ok in Penn (if no weather problems).

Personally, I prefer taking the Pa Pike (RT76) all the way into Ohio before heading South (on ohio Rt 585) off of exit 13 (Rt 76).

So if you are in central NJ head down rt 1 to the Pa Pike, if in northern NJ take Rt 78 to Carlisle and join Pa Pike there.

Plan for 8 hours with gas and coffee break stops only.

meganvirg, Thank you.

The first drive out there we left home (3 seconds off of exit 10 on rt. 280) and were in the hotel sitting down 6.5 hours later.
The only reason for traffic is that I think the bridge BEFORE, not over, the Delaware Water Gap may be the kind that came down in MN. They were taking core samples and things like that. It meant the Rt. 80 was one lane. Normally west of Denville on 80 is an easy ride. In the beginning of PA it is not in great shape.
I will happily try the other routes. We are 10 min. off rt. 78!

oldinJersey, 6.5 hours is not bad at all. When I think of OH, I think of a longer trip.

we looked at St. Mary's College in MD for dd. That turned out to be at least 4.5 hours, might have taken more like 5 hours even without traffic. Once we saw that, eastern Ohio didn't seem so far.
College of Wooster is very close to the PA border. Once you see the actual campus you fall in love. It is very large considering how small a population it has, and very pretty.

I am looking forward to my midwest trip next summer (hopefully). We plan to look in the south, but only as far as NC (unless our son finds a FLA school) and in the midwest.

We dropped our daughter off for band camp at COW, visited a friend in Ann Arbor and then returned for freshman/parent activities. While the NJ traffic seems bad, I wish our trip had been that short. 20 hours from Florida! We are heading back for family weekend but we are making it part of a larger vacation. We will be visiting friends in Va and Ct since, to us, we are in the area. I guess it all depends on how you look at it!

We'll be coming in for parent weekend too. I assume the marching band will play at some point - I hope so. I loved the group photo on the website along with the other freshman pic.
I wish they'd update the band page but what with the director being away this year the sub may not think of it. (whine)
