hey parents..im a high school senior, i just have a quick question. if i indicated on my applications that i intended on applying for financial aid, is it going tobe a problem if i dont apply for financial aid in the end? and is it a problem if the financial aid documents are sent in (online) a day or two past the deadline, beacuse i just found out the columbia one is due TOMORROW. let me know, thanks!

Most people think that not applying for aid will give you an edge in the application pool. The ability to pay will not make up for the rest of your application.

Since you are applying to Columbia which is need blind in the admissions process, you should just apply for aid, because it won't matter to your admissions. Unless your parents have no problem paying approx $170,000 over the course of your 4 years, then don't apply. I think you should be discussing this with them because no matter what we say or think, they will be the ones responsible for writing the check.

Deciding to apply/not apply for aid also depends on the school. Schools like NYU do not allow you to apply for aid in subsequent years if you do not apply as a freshmen. In addition, some schools offer merit based on filing the FAFSA.

thanks sybbie...i just meant that the problem is the deadline...i had no idea the app was due tomorrow and its like over 20 pages long, and my mom is sick/lazy and she'll complain a whole lot if i make her fill it out by tomorrow. i figure she'd be done w/ it by the 17th, is this okay even though the deadline is the 15th?

Well, since monday is actually a holiday, it may not be a problem. File the FAFSA and the CSS profile on line using what she has. You can always go back and update the FAFSA.
