Parents of the high school class of 09

Muffy--I also doubted the admission people had time to analyze. The response each time son answered that question in person was to explain why their school was really better than those other schools being considered!

Thanks for that link, northeastmom!

Florida State asked D that question. She put down Purdue University, Penn State, and University of Central Florida. Purdue because they are #1 in her field, Penn State is #2 and she chose U of Central Florida so the admission people know that she is serious about going to school in Florida, and they also have an competitive program in her field.

Thanks all-I had read the post by tokenadult and found it very interesting. I think the problem became S wanting this school to know that he is applying to the schools in the NW (GC suggested that this was a good thing) and yet since he doesn't have a 1,2,3 in order past this school being his #1 -what to do? H thinks I am way overthinking this. Thanks that everyone seems to think his answer was fine.
I will be so happy when this is all over. My mantra is "all of these kids will go to college somewhere and it will be good".

True, oregon. Good mantra.

Son finally finished essay for in-state match/safety school & submitted it today. I felt like Sisyphus---every day a struggle to get him to sit down & do something on it. He finally devoted a few hours last night (after 3 weeks of nagging). And, as often happens, he created something that (after some slow-process editing by him) was, I thought, pretty beautiful. Guess we'll see.

good for him JolynneSmith! S wrote two nice "thank you's" today on his own. Still so far to go....

I learned with the first. The more I nagged the less S did. With D I'm just staying out of it and she is progressing at her speed. She's doing ED to one school and the coach there doesn't want her to submit until the first week in Nov. D's attitude is she might as well do all the rest at the same time. Not sure that I agree but as I said -- I'm staying out of it.

D stopped in at the college fair during classroom hours yesterday and chatted with the admissions woman from Temple. She asked D a few questions and D told her what major she's applying to at Temple and that she had already prepared her application but hasn't submitted it yet, waiting to take SAT and ACT tests this month again, etc.. The ad woman told D to email her when she does apply, to let her know that she submitted the application. This is a good thing, right?

well JSM...it certainly doesn't sound like a bad thing ;). Congrats to your D for being proactive. Sounds like she has things under control.

I just wondered if this happened to anyone else's kid (not at Temple necessarily) and what it could mean. We're assuming that this admissions person is going to follow her application along?

JSM-that is what I would think. Your D could also drop her a note now just to say "thanks for the talk"...and mention that she will e-mail soon.
Question-not to highjack here but -do the e-mails get printed and put in the file the way a letter/note does?

I admire what the Temple rep did as good execution of a cost-free marketing technique.

Even if no one actually reads the e-mail, asking her to send it makes her feel appreciated and personalizes the whole application process. I would bet that one sentence -- "Send me an e-mail when you submit your application" -- doubled (at least) the student's sense of connection to Temple, and the likelihood that she will enroll if accepted.

But of course, someone will read it, and I'm sure there will be some sort of notation that she had showed interest at her school's college fair, etc. Can only help (a) the student's chances of getting accepted, and (b) the college's chances of accepting a student who may enroll.

Good for Temple!

As for whether e-mails get printed and put in the file: I suspect it's the other way around. Paper letters (and applications, of which there are fewer and fewer) get scanned and put in the electronic file with the e-mails.

Things are looking up! D received priority application invites from two of the match schools on her list this week, that would be an added incentive for her to get going on completing the apps, and both came with fee waivers (!!) so perhaps we could spend that money on a couple more apps that she had set aside because she did not have time to visit. She had a four-day weekend for Columbus Day next weekend to work on them, but now her coach has rented the local YMCA camp to take the team there for extra training (AARGH!!).

Good luck to any D's or S's taking SAT's tomorrow!

JHS-Ok-that is cool and I never thought about letters being scanned and put in the electronic file. Does anyone else know how this goes-maybe a Question for the Dean. S wants to write to his EA but I was thinking that a letter would be better than an e-mail. He has e-mailed a few profs. I wonder if the profs ever pass on the e-mail? Just wondering how this high tech world is handling all of this.
Rachacha-that is great. But the extra 4 day training-I agree-why now? S signed up to go on a 4 day retreat in a few weeks that he could have done in the spring......

Good Sunday Morining everyone! I just wanted to share the change that has taken place over the last couple of days

I have achieved what can best be described as list Nirvana. I am totally at peace and seem to have lost the compulsion to get my girls look at "just one more school because it offers _____________" I won't deny that I am a little bummed that Whitman and UPS never got out of the blocks w/ TwinE, sad about Cornell College and St. Mary's Notre Dame never getting more than the mom appeasing "sure, I'll look at it" from TwinK and more than a tad regretful that Oxy never really seemed to have a chance with either of them.

But regrets aside I am very pleased with the schools they have decided to apply to. I am just wondering what I will do with all this free time now that my....oooops.... I mean their college search is over...maybe I will take up knitting.

I am just wondering what I will do with all this free time now that my....oooops.... I mean their college search is over...maybe I will take up knitting.

... move to financial aid forum? :P

ohhhhh excellent idea!

Congrats on the nirvana, historymom! Btw, have they finished their apps, or finalized their lists? Either is great! We've backloaded the decision-making (for after acceptances, if any, come in) so haven't considered making 'the list' much of an accomplishment, since it's so broad. :-) I can see that it would be awesome for someone to have realistically narrowed theirs down, though.

I'm really, really hoping for a 'reprive' -- for both son & I -- once the last application is in (this weekend? in a few days?). He'll have completed the SAT IIs (w/no studying..sigh) and I'll have a few moments before I dive into financial aid stuff (except for making a chart of the colleges and their scholarship deadlines).

I'm trying to think of something fun/non-geeky (aka something that son would do) for the two of us. We both really need to have some pleasant, non-nag-based time.

I'm liking the breakfast idea mentioned earlier, as a start. He loves McD's, maybe I'll bring him there as a surprise one day. In fact, maybe I won't wait till apps are done.

My daughter has already submitted things online to two schools with errors on them...hit SEND too soon and immediately realized something was wrong. One error was deleting the header (like name) on a document before she emailed it. So she had to send another email apologizing and sending the corrected document. The other error was more bizarre and required about four emails and two phone calls to make the admissions office aware of what she did. I guess the bright side is that Jenny in the admissions office will remember my daughter's name!!!!

In my dreams, next Sunday we will be pushing "send" on the common app and supplement for S2's ED school. That one is due Nov. 1, and we'll send in the arts supplement and stuff Monday. Then he has two more apps. with Dec. 1 deadlines and then (he thinks) he'll get a bit of a reprieve until Jan. 15 when the rest (3) are due. Of course that doesn't include any music auditions to be scheduled. The silver lining for him was that his testing was done so, unlike most of his friends, he didn't have any testing yesterday.

I'm already knitting...but only so I won't bite my fingernails.....

Isn't it awful to look forward to the "waiting" --which will be equally awful, but without the nagging?

Progress :)

Let's see:

Testing complete and scores sent to 8 colleges
Common app info section complete
Common app essay complete and read by English teacher ("Beautiful essay")
Resume complete (common app additional info section (?) or maybe sent by the counselor)
Two teacher recs requested - to be turned in to the gc, I think
Additional rec (community service) requested to be sent directly to colleges

Not complete:
Common app short (150 word) essay
Supplements at any school that requires supplements :(

I feel so much better about the process today. Obviously d is not pushing that send button yet, but she is moving in that direction, at least.
