Parents of the high school class of 09

historymom,

Yes, my D (not S) will apply EA to Trinity. Trinity U is definitely one of the tippy-top-of-the-list schools for her. A rep from Trinity will visit her school soon, and she will get to gather more info. She has signed up for 5 visits with reps visiting her school in the month of Oct - too busy. I just made her halt and prioritize some things in her life; Hurricane Ike made a hectic month almost impossible as there seems to be the need to make-up time lost in class and ECs. Each teacher wants to get back on track asap, as do team advisors, et al.

Muffy333 -geez-you made me feel better. S also did not have a perfect online experience and we are still thinking about how to make a fix. THANK YOU-as I have been angsty about it.
Ok ignatius -congrats! to yours-S has no resume he plans to send (did give one to GC). S did spend hours on the Common Ap today and became so frustrated with dates and things like "how many weeks" was his track season (!)

oregon101

I agree about the ec section of the common app frustrating d. Hours per week, weeks per year - so many of her activities just don't fall into a neat category that way. More than one activity has a regular weekly time with a monthly meeting included and then (to further confuse the issue) several days spent away from school for competitions; d didn't want to short the time spent on an ec by ignoring the extended time periods, but dividing up the hours into a weekly amount looked strange, too.

Ignatius,

Kudos on all the progress made in your home! We're moving in that direction in mine. Scores for SAT sent to one school and National Merit people. Will wait for directions from guidance director on sending the others -- some schools accept what is on our transcripts, so that saves money and time. The Common App essays are written -- but he wants to let an English teacher or two re-read them. Teacher recs have been requested. The resume needs a once-over and then it's done.

So we are moving in the right direction, which is good. My son's first deadline is Nov. 1.

Maybe if one or two activities' "time spent" can't be summarized in the space given you write about them in the little essay where you talk about an activity in depth? My D had one activity that was a million hours a week the year she was president and almost nothing the years she wasn't president.

SJTH, ignatious & momreads--congrats on the progress! Muffy & oregon that is so frustrating re: the computer apps!

Son reviewed his U of Wash app & either submitted it last night or will today.

Here's a trick: "Can I have just 10 minutes of your time later tonight to discuss something?" Son is amenable. If I try to just jump into a college discussion, he balks (I think because this is a never-ending topic at our house, it seems). Key: discrete time periods for discussion (I think I heard this idea first on this thread!!).

With the online apps, I'm just going to assume that a lot of kids make mistakes and that the admissions clerks are used to "um...can I fix that?" calls. She's applying to mostly public colleges anyway and I think they make decisions based on the transcript and SAT, neither of which she has any role in transmitting.

sigh...I knew it was too good to last! D2 was just notified that if she could squeek out one more point on her ACT she could change her grad status from High Honors to Highest Honors. She is very competitive and wants to retake. ARRGGHHH!!!

ooops sorry Ignatius for the D/S snafu. and congrats on the progress.

Jolynne errhmmm no, the apps are not all in but at this point the pieces are pretty much in place it's just the execution. My nirvana is because I have reached a point where I have become content and happy w/ what they have become content and happy with. I have ceased looking for the greener grass, the better program, the better chance at merit $$. Their lists are potentially still in flux but I have no more worries about the one that might be getting away. But since you asked:

TwinK has one app in and the commonapp mostly complete and an essay
TwinE has two apps in and ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

There are two schools which will require more from them but the goal is to get the safeties out of the way before tackling the reaches.

NorthMinn: count it as a blessing. If she is that motivated to bring herself up by a point then it sounds like you will be relieved from nagging duty.

I just think it strange that it doesn't go by GPA or even a combo of grades and test scores! You can have a low GPA and never made honor roll but if you get a 34 you can graduate with Highest Honors.

agree North Minn...strange system. It's hard to imagine that the teachers would go along with it. We tend to want to reward the kids who work hard over those that don't but test well.

THREE CHEERS FOR HISTORYMOM'S NIRVANA!

I think making the list(s), and moreover, finding a calm center in the middle of all this is a huge, huge accomplishment. Hats off to you and the girls, historymom.

HMW ;) thanks and good luck w/ that early app! Here's hoping your S1 ends up with the results he's looking for.

D called yesterday (she was touring a college with H). "MOM, the admissions person I met said that since I'm out-of-state I should have my application in to them ASAP!"

Duh... haven't I been telling her this since JULY and she's been on plenty of campus tours to KNOW this!?!?!?

Oh, when does the DRAMA end?!??

Jerseyshoremom, my kids don't listen to me half of the time, but when someone else says the same thing that I told them, then they perk up and listen.

I have a question that may come up down the road...

D has a #1 favorite school that she wants to get in to. She has seen dozens of other colleges and #1 is a perfect fit for her, but she's OOS and the school is rather competitive (it's in Florida). Her test scores may be too low. D has decided to pick any college that accepts her but will continue to work hard in freshman and sophmore years to transfer in to her #1 favorite. Should she apply to any FL college and work on a transfer or stay home and go to a local CC and work on the transfer. She's a horrible test taker, here ECs are excellent and so is her GPA, other than that, the only thing that will hold her back is her test scores.

Not to provide an unrelated answer to your question, JSM, but has she tried hiring a one-on-one tutor to prep for the standardized test? Also--my son did better on ACT than SAT (not many kids in our state take ACT, but it can have a better outcome). Good luck to her.

She took both 3 times. I found my answer on the University website. Thanks all.

JSM I would like to raise a steaming mug of tea to your D and my own two as well as the rest of the kids out there with overall wonderful credentials but not so strong test scores.
I have to believed that their admissions dreams can come true too. Keep the faith.

We are trying to keep the faith. We did some campus tours over the summer and she really liked the weather and "new-ness" of the a few particular colleges in Florida. She thought she would love all of the colleges on her list (in various States) but after touring them the past 2 months, she keeps saying "yea, I'll apply ... but I'm only going transfer to xyz college in Florida".

So, this morning got me thinking. Why is she busting her butt applying to various colleges that she isn't interested in attending all 4 years.

When she gets back tonight from visiting a school in NC, I'm going to sit her down and ask her if she is not accepted to her "dream" FL school, if she'd rather apply to a local CC in the same town as her "dream", find an off-campus apartment with "dream" school student(s) and start the paperwork on the "dream" school's admittance through a smooth transfer (which they guarantee). I have read that it is harder to transfer into the "dream" school from another university both inside and outside the State.
