Hmm, history - sounds like a good essay topic to me. Thanks. Can you somehow work texting, Skype, and Xbox into an appealing EC for me?? I mean, for my son??

Congrats for all of the submitted apps - sounds like some of you have had a productive weekend!!!

My DS has done a couple of the shorter questions, but no big essay yet. I was hoping for this weekend, but it doesn't look good. I believe there might be a mental block/power struggle thing going on here. Like if it was just called "homework assignment" and not "THE ESSAY" it might be done already! This is excruciating for me...controlling my urge to nag, remaining upbeat when I don't feel that way. No matter how tough the Jan 1 to March 1 waiting for the word might be, it'll beat this!!

"And finally to ignatius and bballfraser an herbal tea toast to the hope that our offspring will one day have the chance to sit in a class, dorm lounge, dining hall and/or stadium together."

Historymom, what a joyful thought! While our offspring are doing that, maybe we can all head downtown for margaritas and really celebrate! :-)

mom in va we really do all feel your pain. I honestly believe that a lot of kids, uhhh like my own TwinK put off the application because it is the only thing they can control about this whole time marching on, growing up, scarey leaving home thing.

upbeat is good. When it gets tough to put on an act remember that you are the same woman who ooohhhhh and ahhhhed over the golden macaroni necklace you received for mothers day when she was 5. Channel that ;)

Mom inVA, have faith! The only reason S got his essay drafted was a bribe...if he got an acceptable draft done, he could take a day off and attend a big video game convention. DH thought it was a bad idea to bribe him to take care of his own responsibilities and he might be right....but he's 90% done with the essay and I think the price of the bribe was well worth it.

He's not in school on Wednesday due to the PSAT, and his job will be to get some of the short supplement essays done.

So happy I can obsess about this here...my friends and family thank you.

Can I join you for the margaritas? Pretty, please?

Thanks for your words of encouragement historymom and cpeltz. I know he's got a lot of moving parts going on to juggle (Science project, It's Academic competitions, much pressure for all A's, recs, etc.--and that's just what know!) that I am trying mightily to let him have downtime and not poune on the essays whenever I see him at ease. It's just that he's doing a EA that's due soon...why do I think we'll be taking the last day of Oct. off of work/school to get that done?? Guess that's not so bad, is it? We had a little practice at this when he was getting his Eagle Scout stuff completed. It was like pushing a rope but he came thru. Thanks again for your words of support.

Thanks for the congrats on the first completed app, all. Of course I'm humbled when I read that some of your kids have completed multiple apps--wow! We all have our own little milestones, right?

I can't even remember applying to college, though I know I applied to three. I also only visited colleges by attending debate tournaments on college campuses. Oh, the times they have a 'changed.

I'm grateful to be hanging out with you all this time around!

SJTH when I applied I only applied to the UC system. you submitted one app, checked off the campuses you wanted to be considered for and then sat back and waited to hear. I don't even rememeber if there was an essay. If there was you can be that mine was self-absorbed, self-important and probably terribly silly to boot...I've re-read some of my writing from hs and it is a lesson in humilty to say the least. Anyway yeah it is a whole new ballgame for our kids. Thanks for binging that up!

There was one question something like why you choose the campus (if I remember correctly). There was 1 page to answer the question. I filled about 3/4 page (hand writing, not condensed. All written by me, not read by teacher or classmates).

so coolweather if you don't mind my asking which campus and what years? In 1980 I applied to UCSB, UCSD, and UCSC. My criteria...no lie... was access to a beach. I ended up at UCSC due to parental pressure but loved it.

I applied in 1981 to UCB (first choice), but was re-routed to a southern campus. I think you could only be considered by one of the 3 campuses at that time.

I had several friends at UCSC who were "Berkley Redirects" Only one went and she found that it was more of a fit for her family than for her. She ended up graduating from SFSU. Did you stay at your original campus or Cal?

I redirected me from Cal because I lived in the south at that time. Cal was impacted. I was also accepted to a CSU campus but I chose not to go there.
I think you picked 3 campuses in order 1, 2, 3 for the first round. After that, they assigned you one campus to work with. You only wrote the statement and sent paperwork to the assigned campus.

Oh well, I was hoping my DS would get his app in to NC State by tomorrow, the 1st deadline! it would have been REALLY nice to have an answer by 12/15. Alas, the personal statement has not even been started. Why write when you can take a nap!! Or hang out with girls!! Or text people! Of course he's not sweating this a bit! I, however, cannot stand it!! UGH!

Just spent $45 this morning sending 5 ACT score reports to colleges D applied to. 2 of which superscore. Ugh, I spent $250 in the last week on application fees, not to mention she took the ACT twice and the SAT twice (another $45 or so each). It killed me to pay $60 on one application fee, are these colleges serious?

On the test scores - D called every school she plans to apply to last week to see if they would accept the ACT score report that is included in her HS transcript, only one school insisted on having us send the official ACT report, this ends up saving us quite a bit of money, so it is worth it to check.
