Parents of the high school class of 09

Thanks SJTH-he is nearly finished. Really dislike that one.
Rachacha-gosh did not even think to question that the school would except the SAT and ACT from the HS transcript. Is there anyway ( website) to find this out other than calling--don't know when he would have time to make the calls. Dang--one more thing, but thanks for the info.

vballmom: "While the sophomores & juniors at S's school take the PSAT on Wednesday, all seniors work on college applications and/or scholarship applications."

Same for my d. I do think she is through with the common app - she just needs to put all the pieces together in the right places. However, she needs to work on essay supplements for ND and Rice and scholarship essays for at least two other schools. Hoping that tomorrow sees an essay (rough draft is fine) that will eventually wend its way to a university.:)

Attended a college fair and stopped at the tables of the colleges where d plans to apply. It reconfirmed her choices in her mind - so happy, happy, joy, joy for that.

She is wavering about adding ASU. Great NM incentive and has a degree in what she is interested in (warm weather too :)). However, she learned about the three campuses scattered about town and expressed concern about that - in other words, a change in major could bring about a change in campus or even an interest in different classes could signal a trek from one to another, she thinks. Does anyone know anything about the three campus system at ASU?

Hi you 09'ers. I have an 09'er too, only she's graduating from college. She is stressing about applying to law schools away from me, and I can't help! Boo! And only one sitting of LSAT. Boo!

Ladies, it never ends, but I think dear historymom has it right. I am going to dig up one of those macaroni necklaces and wear it proudly to deal with my stress. I've heard they're better than amber (which someone told me balances something or other.)

TOS: Are there other prosthetics for law school applicants?

Certainly, my girl is a nail biter, so maybe not prosthetic pinkie but prosthetic nails.

And I thought my troubles were over when she got into her first choice college. NO!

Haven't posted for a week or so, but little has changed in DD's progress (or lack of) BUT.........she received her first acceptance today! Financial safety--Indiana University--no packet yet, but online confirmation. She hasn't seen it yet. I've spent my day thinking about ways to casually suggest she check the site for an update. I was pretty excited for her.

Sounds like some others are making excellent progress and acceptances are starting to come in.--congrats!

historymom and mythmom, thanks for the reminders.

They are not long, the days of construction paper and gilded rigatoni. That's why we save those things so relentlessly, why the sisterhood of motherhood, those of us who can instantly make friends with a stranger by discussing colic and orthodonture, have as our coat of arms a set of small handprints executed in finger paint.

Each day we move a little closer to the sidelines of their lives, which is where we belong, if we do our job right.

I have a tattered copy of that essential Anna Q column taped over my desk. It helps, every day.

This morning I woke up with a wide gray streak in my hair and my teeth clenched so tightly I could barely open them. But I managed to talk cheerfully about things other than college until S1 and S2 were on their respective buses.

Cheers for the progress many are making, and cheers for the wonderful children we've all got.

Harriet--so glad (I think) to hear that the teeth clenching and increasing amount of gray hair is shared by others.

rrah - congratulations!! My D has also applied to IU but no acceptance yet. I think her GC just sent the HS documents last week. How long did it take to hear from them after all your D's material was submitted?

HMW - Aha! I went to the dentist this morning for a toothache and he diagnosed episodic (as opposed to chronic) teeth clenching. I attibuted it to the state of the economy, but you may be right - it might just be due to the college app process ;)

I haven't posted for almost a month, but I've enjoyed lurking and hearing about all your successes, progress, and shared wisdom. Not a lot of application progress to report on this end. D has submitted applications to IU and Tulane (non-Common App and no essay required :)); she had a local interview with Macalester ("It went great! I think she (the interviewer) really liked me!"); and she got her NMSF packet complete and turned in on time. So, actually lots of progress....just still have the whole Common App plus supplements thing hanging over us...um, I mean over her.

Harriet....sniff, I have to remember to print out a copy of that column.

mythmom...my mom wore the hideously garish paper mache' blossom I gave her in the 4th grade for the remainder of my days at home. It proudly adorned her robe. Prosthetic nails are the only way to go but at least here in CA they are such a way of life that alas they are no hook.

Congrats rrah! My D hasn't received any notification yet from schools.

I check the status online for D since I'm around a computer all day. I was wondering what I'd do when I see the notification from her first school. Anyone do anything special?

History, HMW, mythmom, thanks for the reminder that thinking long-term (forwards and backwards) can help us get through the anxious times. The feeling of those little hands giving you a great big hug, the way your head still whips around when you hear "MOM" in the grocery store, those little treasures you still unpack every Christmas even though the cotton balls are long gone and the edges are tattered. And now they're big and driving and hairy (well, the SONS are, hopefully the DAUGHTERS aren't) and moving so fast away from us!

Myth, I think a law school application calls for a slightly classier prosthetic device than a pinkie. Maybe a surgically attached briefcase or Blackberry?

HMW, thank you for that quote. "The sisterhood of motherhood", indeed!

TiredofSnow: Big and driving and hairy. Now THAT'S going to get me through the evening with a goofy grin! :D

Hi mythmom

Two in the class of 09: senior in college and senior in hs. And yes, law school for the college 09er also. She took the LSAT in Oct. and is working on apps. now.

D got the first "thin envelope" today - not a big deal, she is not a finalist for the student-athlete scholarship (300 nominations, only 10 finalists) but her app goes into the RD pool. She knew it was a long shot to begin with and the strategy was to go for it to get the early read if anything else. The fact that she got a separate note from the Admissions Dean (who read the app) was promising...now she has to work on those eight other apps!

Activity List/Resume Question: Are your applicants attaching an Activity List and/or resume? The activity boxes are so restrictive, so DS and I did an expanded list, still in a spreadsheet form, but with more room for the narrative portion. This would be to attach in add'l info section. Elsewhere on CC I see this may be overkill. Rather than a spreadsheet look, is it better to simply add a couple of paragraphs in the additional info section that describe more fully the key activities?

Don't know if it's right or wrong to do so, but my d is attaching a fairly simple one page resume (not a spread sheet) in the add'l info section. At least that is the plan. She did ask her gc about attaching her resume and got the go-ahead to do so. I assume the add'l info section is the place to do so on the common app.

PRJ--I'm embarrassed to say that I'm not sure if she turned in her counselor on 9/16 or 9/23. I believe it was the 23rd. He's pretty quick in September on turning them around. They probably had it within a day or so. It seems from the IU forum that students that had everything submitted by the 3rd and 4th full weeks of Sept. are receiving notifications. I can tell you that yesterday it still said they needed the form and the scores (I previously confirmed they had the scores). Today it said Congratulations!

Okay, thanks Ignatius. I'm sure there's more than one way to do it, and I'm probably over-thinking it.

D has a significant amount of EC's that couldn't be all listed on her app. She took the most important ones and put them in the application. The GC sent a "resume", complete listing, along with the transcript and recommendations.

ignatius, the fact that you can still post with that going on is impressive. My D also took the LSAT's in Oct. and is sure she didn't do as well as her practices. She's way stressed.

All Anna Quinlen lovers: Mia has been served pancakes by AQ at midnight breakfasts that Barnard gives during finals.

mom in virginia-S is attaching a very simple "resume" listing categories but he did not put dates. I know some students have a more formal resume but his idea is just to highlight his interests vs a brag sheet. Yes, in the add'l info section. The one Leadership (his first) application, he had not at all realize that he wanted to do this.
After a few e-mails with the school, he was able to send it through e-mail and have it added.
