Parents of the high school class of 09

<<rachacha: hi="" everyone="" -="" i="" was="" wondering="" if="" anyone="" has="" suggestions="" on="" how="" to="" communicate="" schools="" that="" d's="" hs="" does="" not="" grade="" inflate="" (in="" fact,="" there="" is="" such="" a="" thing="" as="" deflate="" our="" school="" it!)="" an="" unweighted="" 4.0="" very="" rare="" in="" district="" class,="" young="" man="" with="" superscored="" 2400="" sat="" and="" 36="" act="" only="" 3.85="" weighted="" gpa,="" d="" 34="" 3.76="" just="" out="" of="" the="" top="" 10%="" since="" classmates="" taking="" less="" rigorous="" classes="" have="" higher="" gpa's.="" .="" it="" isn't="" problem="" get="" apps="" from="" students="" all="" time,="" reputation="" there,="" but="" applying="" oos="" no="" one="" ever="" applied="" to.="" should="" we="" ask="" gc="" elaborate="" grading="" her="" rec?="" read="" profile,="" other="" than="" weighting="" scale="" summary="" really="" mentioned....="">></rachacha:>

D's school is the same. D has 1570/1600 (not superscored) and a 2370/2400 (superscored) if you want to factor the writing in. Her GPA is 4.12 weighted and she is "just out of the top 10%, since classmates taking less rigorous classes have higher GPA's". A's in honors/AP classes are few and far between (which hurts when colleges recalculate and drop the weighting for honors/AP - a B in AP language shouldn't count the same as a B in junior year English) and the weighting system allows an 83 in an AP class to count less than a 94 in the regular class. I found it somewhat strange that the exact number grade is calculated rather than a 4.0 for both classes, which would at least weight it equally. I did talk to d's counselor about addressing the issue in her rec, since it is a point of frustration here. I gathered that it might be a point of frustration for the gc also, so that's a good thing. Colleges must be aware of this sort of thing, as it happens round the country :) (I believe you might be in NY and I am in TX.) - so that's another good thing. Anyway, it's less the GPA than the ranking system. On the plus side, it is noted on d's transcript that she took the most rigorous classes. Hopefully reps can sort through and figure out everything.

My D received her first deferral, to her #1 school, just saw the update online. I called to "break" the news to her but she sounded positive and upbeat, THRILLED that they didn't outright deny her and are giving her a second chance to bring up her test scores. She's scheduled to take the ACT test Saturday so we hope she ace's the test.

Interesting. Glad your D took the news well. I'll cross my fingers for her - and my D as well, who is also re-taking the ACT on Sat.

I didn't realize that you could view your acceptance status over a website! Guess we have some ropes still to learn.

They will follow up with a letter in the mail. We found that only the Florida schools that D applied to, UCF, USF, FGCU, and Florida State, are the only schools out of the 10 she applied to (in various other States) that she has been able to follow her status of the documentation received, then when they have everything it says that her application is under review, then it will tell us the decision. Also, if they are missing anything, it's reported online too so we can follow up on that.

I'm sure it's a time-saver for college admissions, that they don't have to respond to requestis for status updates by phone.

Well, DD turned in several more guidance counselor forms today. One required some rating boxes be checked. He just told her he would check "superior" for all of them. I have to go back. This really puts the pressure on her to get an essay done for a couple of them! Go, D, Go.

I think it's generally larger state schools that have the online application status checks. Indiana U in Bloomington has it. That's how we learned of D's admit-still no letter a week later. She did receive a letter from them though since there was several weeks between the time she hit "send" and sent in the guidance form.

So much progress being made! Good for all our children.

Anyone else have a child taking the SAT in Nov?

No to testing in Nov. No to SAT testing ever, ever again.

Sorry ... it just feels so good to type those words. (Let's see ... in this household in the past few years ... 6 SAT I's, lost count of SAT IIs but over 12, and the ACT twice.)

I was so thrilled the testing was finished at the end of junior year for DS. His SAT was very good, ACT better, and the SATII's are what they are. His scores are much higher than his grades to begin with, and with all the pressure, I didn't push for him to retake them. Whew! We have an agreement that all supplemental essays/apps will be complete by the end of October, ready for review and sending by 11/12.

I will be patient, I will be patient, I will be patient AND I will exhale for at least a couple of weeks once this is done!

Sooooo, yeah we hope and pray and the girls have prepared for for amazing results from Sat's ACT. May we all have children who bring home two digit scores with a three in the tens place!!! Woot woot woot!

My son is also in the Class of 2009. Being my last of three, his mom is a little panicked at the thought of him leaving for college, but he has all gears revving to go. He has his plate full throughout high school being involved every year in Student Council and now as the President. His schedule at 17 wears old this old mom. Stuco, Beta Club, National Honor Society, math club, acts as a student advisor on school board planning committees and works with the elementary school as an ESL tutor. On top of that, church youth group, and the audio technical team for church services. He traveled to Washington DC after winning a Washington Youth Tour essay, and he's been on a televised gameshow as a National Vocabulary Championship participant. He's also been to Florida, Texas and New Orleans in the last year with Southern Student Councils. I just can't keep up!

This kid is so different than my social butterfly daughter, and my S1 who was smart but didn't want to apply himself once college rolled around. This one says he doesn't want to go to college just to "say he's been there". He THINKS he wants to take a Math Honors class which is what we are going to check out in the morning. He has a 34 on his ACT in 11th grade that has improved every year from a 22 in his 7th grade year. He took the PSAT and made NM commended student and so he wanted to take his SAT for the first time and learned today he made 2170. He's taking the ACT again on Saturday just to see if he can bring his math subscore up. He has a 36 subscore in Reading, and English, and a 35 in Science....his math is lacking a little at 29.

He is just a kid that loves to learn. It's funny, he just saw "The Big Bang Theory" for the first time couple of nights ago. We laughed...because he IS "Sheldon".

He's been accepted to Maryville College, and while I am trying to encourage Vanderbilt, he (and his girlfriend) are both planning to attend the University of Tennesee. She is also a gifted student and plans to become a veternarian. He plans to study engineering (and join their medieval reenactment group). His dream is to attend MIT for graduate school. Right now he tells me he "just wants to learn EVERYTHING".

I presume I'm like everyone else on this thread, and not even breathing the thought out loud to my DS that for grad/prof schools there's another set of testing requirements. I'm with clinking the glasses of (non-alcoholic) bubbly once the SAT/ACT is taken for the final time.

findaplace I'll bring sparkling cider along for you if you would like. When is your S done?

ok. a question from an application newbie -

D has now submitted 4 of 6 apps. Yippee! I'm trying to figure out how to monitor all of this online. From what I see on college websites (if I can find it at all) it looks like you need a user id and password. My question is, is this something that is automatically sent to the applicant?

ChiSquare--in our experience, it is sent via email (to the email the student put down as the contact email in the app). Thus, my son put his personal email (quite rightly) but now he's in charge of setting up the accounts & passwords, I can't do that busy work for him.

If your student wants to give you the account info, either before/after it's set up, then you can monitor it.

I definitely wanted to stay out of son getting notifications of acceptance/rejection (that's his gig). But, I did want to check to make sure that the schools received everything (apps, recs, scores, transcripts, fees).

So, that's our new project this weekend--for him to get accounts set up for all schools to double check receipt of everything.

Different area of the country, different set of schools, - but same weekend project! Good luck on your end.

Mom2ThreeG8Kids, your son sounds lot like like mine -- with his love for learning and his schedule. Today, for example, mine is in school all day -- taking three APs (we are on the block), decorating for the homecoming dance and then participating in homecoming as he is one of the nominees for king. He gets up early Saturday morning to return to the school to finish decorating. Then, he has the dance in the evening. Sunday, he needs to put the finishing touches on his applications, do a ton of homework and study for a test or two.

Just typing that made me tired.

Good luck to you, also, ChiSquare! This will all be done soon.....!

Then there are the interviews to fit in. We just got a card about scheduling an interview from a school I didn't know required interviews. The only rolling admit school to which Son applied requires an interview which can't be until late November, so there goes the early admit.

All I can say is Thank God for early action. My S has one acceptance already and my have another before Thanksgiving. Although they are not his first choices it takes the extreme panic out of the wait in March/April. (OMG what if no one picks him?!?)

Also, will have to say that the marketing colleges do does pay off. We applied to two out of state colleges that were not on the radar to start with. Helped by the offer of no application fee.

All in all I will really be glad when he makes up his mind

OMG, it's hard to imagine a world with so many Sheldons! My kid is more of a Leonard, with a bit of Raj thrown in (talking to girls is a mystery).

He's going to change his early action application to regular decision - marching band season has not been kind to his Calculus grade. Sigh. His grades resemble a sine wave.

ACCEPTED!! D was so excited yesterday, she received her acceptance to the Fall 2013 class at East Carolina U!!

This is her #2 school, UCF is her #1 choice but she was deferred in order to bring up her test scores.

She was THRILLED yesterday when she opened the mail!! This was her first acceptance!!
