Congrats to her!!!!!

Congrats to JSM's daughter and all the other kids who are reaping the fruits of all their hard work!

I can't wait for DS to get his first acceptance (fingers crossed), but that won't happen for awhile since he has yet to hit "send!"

:) to JerseyShoreMom and D.:

Your D will walk into her ACT knowing that she is already a college student; bound to give that little extra spurt of confidence.

To fireflyscout:

The schools wouldn't see that calculus grade now (unless I'm mistaken). The transcripts show spring semester junior year grades - a mid-senior year report will have to be sent ... but nothing that would indicate calculus trouble now.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I just checked another school's status online and D was just now accepted to Florida Gulf Coast University. This campus is BEAUTIFUL, only 10 years old, and located in Fort Myers where the temps are in the 70s in the winter (coming from the frozen North this is a plus). I'm more exciting than D about this school but, according to her, it doesn't have Football and it seemed like a suitcase school.

She's so excited now that she has choices to make!!

Congratulations JSM and D! That's wonderful news!

Best wishes again for all the ACT takers tomorrow. We should all visualize all of our kids pulling high scores as they breeze through each section confidently.

Congrats, JSM & D, plus to kumitedad.

Son got acceptance to Drexel today...(originally his first choice until we researched nearly every other school in the country!).

He also got a $13,500/year Dean's scholarship (only $30k more to go on that tuition!!).

He's happy. :-)

I just wanted to congratulate JSM, Kumitdad, and Jolynne on your children's acceptances! This is so exiting. BTW, I have heard such good things about East Carolina U and Drexel. My son has a good friend who is currently at Drexel.

D applied to Drexel, too. She hasn't heard back yet. Congrats Jolynne and Kumitdad. I think D is the first student to be accepted this year from her HS class!

Son just called and said he's been admitted to St. Edwards (in Austin)!

Need some suggestions...my daughter is dragging on her applications. Mostly because she is overwhelmed with priority applications and is somewhat unclear about where she wants to go.......she knows what she wants to do...medical science related career.....but is simply overwhelmed with the application process.

Anyway, looking for specific school suggestions.....she's going to and is in the process of applying to many schools --- RPI (she's the medal award winner from her school), Penn State, Pitt, Temple, Fordham, SUNY Stonybrook, Drexel, Tulane..... and her absolute reach - Cornell.

She's a top notch student -- 1450 CR and Math and, much to her dismay, a 580 in Writing....she's straight As, AP Scholar with Honors, lots of Academic related ECs, volunteer work (including currently volunteering for Obama campaign) etc.

I'd love for her to expand her view to schools that would award merit -- she loves science and all subjects...she is a thinker and a worker.

Congrats to all who have been accepted. My older daughter was much easier! She was also a great student.....not as strong as younger daughter but very strong.....and she was not a worrier. She just filled out her applications and moved along! My younger daughter is most definitely procrastinating with worry.

What schools should she consider that we haven't thought about?

Congrats missypie, to you & your son!

AdvicePlease--there's a thread entitled 'schools that offer merit money' that might be of help!

Thanks Jolynne ---- I'll check there. My daughter is so all over the place with ideas that I'm really trying to get her focused.....it's difficult because it's late October and she really has no firm idea of where she wants to spend the next 4 years! I think our strategy may turn to apply to lots and then figure it out. That's easier said then done though.....October 24th and not one completely done yet!

Adviceplease -- your daughter might want to consider Rice. It's a great school with close faculty-student interaction, residential college system, collaborative, friendly, down-to-earth students, a beautiful campus with strong science programs. It also has a lot of research opportunities for undergrads. It's right next to the Texas Medical Center -- with 13 hospitals and 2 medical schools so there's great opportunities for medical volunteering and research. They are also less expensive than peer institutions and offer good merit aid.

blackeyedsusan -- Thanks...I'll mention Rice to her. It's amazing to me how many kids are completely sold on one school and there is not a single school that my daughter is really convinced is right for her. We've visited SUNY Stony Brook, UConnecticut, University of Pittsburgh, Penn State, Temple (she completed a summer program), Renssalaer and Fordham. She liked most of them but didn't love any of them.....except she loved the location of Fordham in NYC. She's convinced she has plenty of time to apply.........but it is late October!

If you'd like any info about Rice, please feel free to PM me. My older son is a sophomore there and loves it. (He was also one of those kids that wanted to go far away from home, but went to Rice in spite of its proximity to home because of how much he liked so many aspects of it -- and the merit money didn't hurt!) Here's a link to a 360 degree virtual tour of the campus. Rice University - Virtual Tours

AdvicePlease--my son visited & is applying to some of the same schools. A few of them have the Common App (I think) which can make the process a lot quicker than it might seem when you look at the whole list of schools. We found making a simple chart in Word (columns for school, 'sent transcript', 'wrote essay', sent scores, got teacher rec, submitted app) made it easier to keep track of everything & less confusing. Maybe you are doing some of that, but those things were helpful to us.

DD was accepted to Messiah today! Will still apply to St. Mary's. Regular decision app due January 1st, but I'm telling her it's due December 15th. She's a bit of a procrastinator.
It's a good feeling to know that she is "going somewhere"! Know what I mean?
Congratulations to others who received acceptances this week! Some of the pressure is off! Yeah!

TwinE got her first acceptance today. University of Portland, which is one of her favorites, wants her. It was the most delicious feeling!

Isn't it wonderful to get an acceptance! I'm so glad I steered D down the right path and that all her schools are good fits.

I'm surprised at her response so far. D's test scores are rather low for a student applying out-of-state to big U's and she has no AP or Honors classes. So far she has been accepted to 2 4-year colleges in the Fall and 1 4-year college in the Summer deferred her.

When they say that the recs, resume and ECs help, they truly mean it so if anyone's child still hasn't applied, definately have a solid application and you'll be fine. D invented Extra Curriculars and her old middle school principal who is now Superintendent of Schools wrote one of the three recommendations.

JSM, Congratulations to you and your daughter! I am not surprised at your D's success. Many public high schools in NJ are very strong and I think that admission offices do know that a regular math class, for example, at a NJ public school might be similar to an honor's math class at some high schools in other states. They do take take the high school into consideration.

You are encouraging me right now, as my son is taking the ACT today!

BTW, I was going to send a PM to you. I clicked on your moniker, but I see a whole bunch of "visitor messages" not meant for me after I click. Frankly I don't think that they are meant for you either, and I have no idea what is going on. I also was able to read a PM that was sent to you a few days ago! Why did a PM from someone else show up when I wanted to send a PM to you? Weird, and was not really personal, but it was strange and I don't think it should happen. Somebody needs to fix that situation.
