Parents of the HS Class of 2009 (Part 1)

What bad luck, kmc!

The movers came this morning, but only delivered part of our stuff. Asked if we were available Wednesday for another delivery. We have our mattress but not our bed frame. Three of our six dining room chairs, but no table. And so on. So we’re still waiting, in anticipation. Gives the season of Advent a whole new meaning!

ShawWife recovering from knee replacement number two. She’s way ahead of where she was in terms of flexibility but may be doing too much and is in a lot of pain. The pain killers make her nauseous but so does the pain. Not clear what to do here, but time/ice/PT/exercise will take care of things.

Sounds like incompetent movers. @college_query. Hooray on no Afghanistan, @CBBBlinker. And I hope the problems get resolved quickly. When it got cold during ShawWife’s recovery, the family room where she stays all day was really cold. I called our contractor and he said, “the valve was shot off for that zone.” I never did that. I wonder if it was always off as we’ve been in Sausalito for the last two winters.

Other than that, all is well. ShawD had her second interview at a job for which she’d be very well-qualified (as the doc reading the resume at the beginning of the interview noted).

Pruned my staff a bit because I wanted to be like Warren Buffett – only working with folks I really enjoy working with. Got a subpoena today from the wife of one of the pruned folks. Apparently a difficult divorce – she wants all of his record for 5 years in 10 days (with Christmas in the middle). Not going to happen.

And now, I’ve just brought in two new clients and am renewing a third. Will soon need another talented person.

Hello to all! I have been crazy busy but thinking of you all. My MIL started her chemo this week for breast cancer at the age of 83.5! Have been dealing with logistics of getting her and FIL to appointments and cooking meals for them. Dr told them they need to eat healthier and get some exercise. She was defensive and I don’tthink they will do anything differently. I will continue to send healthy meals.

Christmas celebrations will definitely be different this year but feeling blessed with the new grandbaby and another due in April. So very excited!

Hope everyone is happy and well.

Popping in to say “Happy Holidays” to all. Hope everyone has a chance to spend time with family and friends.

D and her H are with us at the beach, where we’ve been celebrating Christmas an New Years for the last several years. I’m currently waiting on the 1st round of baking for my traditional biscotti. Usually I can do all my baking in 1 day, a sort of baking palooza, which I had planned for yesterday – but D showed up with all sorts of baking plans in mind, too. 99.9% of the time one oven is enough; right now, not so much. Somehow it will all get done.

H and I were in NYC for 2 nights this week – celebrating our anniversary by seeing “Hamilton.” All I can say is, AMAZING!!!

Good Morning and Happy Holidays to all. We are planning for a quiet Christmas with just H, S and me. Original plan was to eat dinner out tomorrow (and possibly see a movie) ,but close friends invited us to dinner at their house which will be much more fun. Except…H woke up this morning not feeling well. Hopefully he feels better.

@CBBBlinker - glad you loved Hamilton!

Happy holiday!
H and I are sadly at an airport hotel as our neighborhood and entire city is ice.
However, we had a marvelous week with S and DIL and 5 yr old g’son.
It is hard to believe we were touring the Midway this afternoon and I have a little
sunburn. Thank goodness they made it back to Seattle that had snow but they made it home.

This is our first ever Christmas without D. I wanted to shake things up and this trip was
definitely different at this time of the year. I adore San Diego and feel so happy there.
D and SIL move to Portland in June and she has told me we cannot move during
their time here…hmm.

Hope everyone one has a nice day. I just learned that our neighborhood lost electricity
6 hours ago. Maybe this hotel isn’t so bad.

Sorry to hear that you are in a hotel, but better than no electricity. Our neighborhood lost electricity last month – some squirrels decided to blow themselves up in the power transformer nearby. ShawWife and I went to a movie rather than hang out in the dark. Coco was surprisingly good.

When we were in San Diego at the beginning of the month, we had dinner with one of my financial advisors and her husband. They moved from the suburbs to a lovely condo building downtown but said that while everyone is friendly, they really haven’t made lots of friends post-move. I don’t know if that is idiosyncratic or systemic. San Diego is an unbelievably pleasant place – especially the weather. ShawWife’s sister visited recently for the first time and said, "Why doesn’t everyone in the country just move there? Our FA was trying to encourage that thought for us but not sure it would work for ShawWife as the arts community would probably be insufficient. For me, I think I’d have to connect with UCSD to find an intellectually community.

Happy Holidays to all!

Have enjoyed having both kids here, although D had to fly home last night, since she’s working the rest of the week. S is here until Thursday afternoon.

Christmas Eve was exhausting for H, with four services. The rest of us only attended one. H spent Christmas afternoon taking a very long nap. We decided to have a very low-key celebration, with no tree, no gift wrapping and very minimal gifts, and I ordered a pre-cooked holiday meal from the local grocery store, which I just had to re-heat. A stress free day for all.

Since our movers just came on Wednesday, we are still surrounded by boxes and disorder. We’ve made our way through some of it. H has way too many books.

We are very much enjoying our new location. It’s a picture-perfect small college town, and our winter has been pretty mild compared to other places we’ve lived.

Best wishes for the New Year to all!

happy holidays to all
So happy no Afghanastan (sic) for CBB son
so sorry that Nm Mn mother in law is sick,
Christmas here has been fine. D2 was working over Christmas but got an unexpected night off.
D2 is here sans BF. His family is visiting DC.
D1 is representing her law school in a model UN type competition. (along with two others)
She was also featured in a book for a non profit on human trafficking. For her contribution to policy in her former employment.
I have a part time NP job. Finally . will start in Jan
I am feeling better. My problems were because of tamoxifen. My liver did not like it. A rare side effect of course.
NM why does your MIL need chemo at this advanced age?
Happy new Year

@downtoearth, glad to hear you are feeling better and that you have found a job.

Hi all. Just a quick Happy Holidays and Happy New Years wish. I didn’t mean to be MIA but the “trouble bubble” distracted me last week with a race against plunging temps vs a pool heater shutting down from flame rollout. Took three different techs to eventually dx and repair, but all’s well that ends well  now I’m about to brave the sub-zero temps to fight my way into the dome for a swim

Road trip to Canada for Xmas was no picnic either but we’re all alive to tell the tale

Hugs to all who need it…and cheers.

Happy New Year!

Went to bed at 9 pm last night. All this unpacking is tiring! We went to see Darkest Hour earlier in the afternoon.

Leaving tomorrow for company meeting in southern California.

Wishing you all a healthy and happy 2018!

Happy New Year to all! Today the UNdecorating begins – always one of my least favorite activities, but it’ll get done.

The deep freeze continues – although some parts of the country have it much worse than here. Because of the cold I’ve been a slacker on the exercise front; no gym membership here at the beach in the off season. Tomorrow we’ll head back to Cambridge.

Anyone making New Year’s Resolutions? While I don’t make an official list, I usually think about a couple of things I’d like to work on. I guess my #1 this year is to have more of a “let it go” mindset – not to the point of having an “I don’t care about anything” attitude, but to stop worrying/stressing about stuff that really doesn’t matter. I need to be more selective about picking my battles.

Happy New Year all and I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays. I managed to pickup one heck of a cold. Back at work today. We will see how long I last.

I have done resolutions in the past and well they don’t “stick” for me for some reason. My biggest one this year is to not let work get to me and take time for ME and not be as consumed by work. I think in the long run that will be better for me. Work doesn’t define me. It’s what I do to live - I don’t live to work if you get my drift.

No real resolutions at NYE. I do an elaborate planning process in the summer (I call it strategic planning for life) with my close friend in Boulder.

Nice to have ShawSon home for two weeks.

ShawD is finishing up her job and was here for NYE – actually we had games and party for New Years at 4-9 with the kids and some of their friends and some of ours and then let the kids head off to their parties and our friends seemingly went off to bed. She’ll be moving back to Boston to a condo that we own – a different one – at some point in January. We had not updated this place in 30 years and had to kick out a tenant to do so. It’s now being renovated.

dte…MIL wants full treatment regardless of her age. Her treatment plan is chemo, surgery and then radiation! She has had three weeks of chemo and not one side effect so far. She is a stubborn old woman!

NM - Your MIL sounds amazing!

NM I wonder which chemo she is getting? has she lost her hair?
I am feeling somewhat better. and that helps my mind. I was so tired during the holidays. I don’t do resolutions, but this is my year for me. I am setting some concrete goals.
We have some weekends away planned. We are going to Vegas this month to see a friend. We are renewing our vows with an Elvis impersonator. Right up my alley.
Shaw is D working in Boston now?

dte…no hair loss at the moment although they said she would experience it. The only drug I know she is taking is Herceptin

NM Herceptin will be for a year. Good for her she is tolerating it well. I f she has Adriamycin she will definitely lose her hair.
Doctor reneged on his offer. He has new NPs and no time to train them. Wants an experienced NP.
He sounds overwhelmed. But he should have thought of that before he made me an offer.
I have not figured out how to respond to him. People disappoint me. This job searching has been an eye opener. I will retire before I become an NP. I think it was a bad decision.
