Thanks jackief. I really have no idea what we're looking for. I figure spring break this year will probably include a variety of sizes and flavors. Vassar, Bard, Clark, Middlebury, maybe a couple of the Boston schools (Brandeis? BU?) Skidmore? I really don't know where to begin!

I don't know of a tongue-in-cheek icon, but I also can't figure out the stick-out-your-tongue icon :-P

Mathmom and others, this might be worth keeping on your radar screen for Clark for the spring.

University Preview Days | Undergraduate Admissions ~ Clark University
Junior Preview Day
Saturday, March 28, 2009
This program is specifically designed for high school juniors and their parents so that they can have a chance to learn what makes a Clark education distinctive. Through an information session, student panel, and campus tour, you will hear about the three Clark signatures: Learn Through Inquiry, Make a Difference, and Experience Diverse Cultures. Visit this page in the spring to view the schedule for the day and to register online.

Winks work reasonably well for tongue-in-cheek. ;). I'm much too polite to stick out my tongue, don't think I've ever felt the need for it.

Thanks for the heads up on the Clark day, perhaps we could combine that with a weekend with my parents. They are less than an hour from Clark. I like the idea of being part of a consortium, but wonder how many people really take advantage of it. It's one thing when it's Barnard/Columbia, another when you actually have to get on a bus.

S2 is definitely working harder this year than he ever has before.

FindAPlace - I actually knew you were being tongue in cheek - but so was I......lol. :P

tongue sticking out: :p

colon and lowercase p

(No nose)

:p more practicing. Thanks mommusic.

thanks mommusic, I thought I tried that. There must be a cheat sheet somewhere on here.

And for the consortium, may have been confusing. I think I mentioned one with internships with farther away LACs. There is also one with classes with other Worcester schools, they mentioned Holy Cross and Becker? They didn't say WPI but I don't know if they just forgot it. They used an example of less popular foreign languages where the schools coordinate who covers what. From this I would assume you would go to HC for Latin if above intro level.

:p

Going on the road again today, at least this will be the END of the visits until probably the spring. Have a 4 day weekend, heading out to Connecticut College.

Just practicing.

wow! well done!

Hi everyone. Just back from Son's first-ever college visit. We saw Gettysburg and liked it. Full report can be found here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visits/gettysburg-college/4642052.html

That's great DougBetsy! D and I (or at least I, who has done all the driving) are burnt out now, but I can really see her becoming more at ease on the tours, asking questions, etc. We won't have time to do more visits until June, so I'm glad we were able to get in all the day trip ones, even if they were llloooonnnnggg days. Next step (in June or so) would be to start scheduling interviews and meetings with coaches (if she decides to pursue that) in addition to the tours etc, especially for the farther away schools where there probably wouldn't be a revisit, at least not before application time. There may be one or two more day trips we could do on a Saturday over the winter, and we'll have score reports back by then also.

DougBetsy - sounds like you had a great visit to Gettysburg. Thanks for posting your report.

jackief - we're not so burnt out with tours, since we haven't gone on any since August, but we just don't have the time. We'll probably try to do some fairly local ones on Saturdays in between the winter and spring sports, and then maybe another small trip during D's spring break. I just don't know how others find the time to do so many trips.

^^ Indeed. Fortunately my S knows he wants some sort of Engineering or CS, so that narrows down the field. I can't imagine having the world open as far as LACs near and far, large and small. With AP classes & activities, who could miss that much school to check them all out?

Yes, it was so easy to make a list for my older son - top student who has wanted to program computers since he was seven. My younger son is much more open, though he probably won't end up in science, math or English.

The good news - It's report card day. Junior Son brought home 4 A's and 2 B's. Freshman Daughter got 5 A's.

The bad news - Son forgot to turn in his XC uniform today. He has had it in his backpack for 2 WEEKS! It was the last day Coach would accept them without penalty. Son is currently on his bike trying to get the uniform up to school before Coach leaves. (H and I are still at work.) If he doesn't get it there in time (4 miles), he receives an "obligation," which makes him ineligible for his athletic award at the team banquet. Also, I think he might become ineligible for the academic award ceremony tomorrow night. Oh, and ineligible for that parking permit he's requesting next week.

I won't be too hard on him. It's a good report card and those penalties more than fit the crime. But, geez. Things were going so well this year. I thought my little space cadet was gone. Must be having a relapse. :P

we are lucky that we are in an area with lots of schools and she wants to stay in this area probably. We took advantage of some days off school which happened to luckily fall in between sports seasons. She wanted this weekend to be a multi school overnight trip, but I squashed that without test scores to determine if some of the reaches she wanted to visit were too far out of reach. I think we've made some good progress and will be able to restart the process later with some experience behind us.

DougBetsy, I can relate to the uniform thing, my younger daughter is the late one, but luckily with no severe consequences yet. Older D had to walk to school to return some library books one year in order to get her final report card.

I have a Jr/Fr also, is it the case with you that the younger one gets higher grades and less homework, because the work is easier in 9th grade? I am hoping that at some point the tables will turn because I feel bad for older D that she is always putting more time in. Maybe Sr/Soph years will start to go the other way.

jackief - I don't know if it's an older/younger thing. I think some kids are just better students than other kids. My older one is my better student, and it's very hard on her little brother. He has all the teachers expecting great things out of him, and he just isn't a natural student, and he doesn't want to work hard enough to become one.
