Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

mamom: which site does your school bookstore use? OUr school just started using a website this year and they do not provide ISBN #s…I definitely do not want to pay bookstore prices (although they do guarantee that they will buy back the books at year-end)

Rodney, S’s school uses [Student Direct](http://www.k12studentdirect.com/)

I am surprised your child’s school does not give ISBN number. S’s school gives us ISBN and edition number. Perhaps an email to each teacher? I suspect some will not get back to you or will tell you they don’t know, but you might get lucky. If you go the the authorized seller and add the books needed to your cart can you see the ISBN at that point? Our authorized book seller doesn’t list ISBN but does list edition number when you put book in cart. You can use edition number instead of ISBN number if you have to.

I save a ton of money buying S’s books elsewhere. His Caculus book purchased from K12 would have cost me $180 each!! I got 2 copies in excellant like new condition shipped to my house for $19 for both books. His physics book is $103 at K12, I got two copies (like new condition) for $45. I can’t find his Latin book anywhere, (I think it is a new edition ) except from k12 and the publisher. Even the publisher was $13 cheaper than K12.

I always buy new, like new books without highlighting or writing for much less that the authorized book seller. good luck.

Rodney I sent you a private message with a list of places I shop online for books

Thanks owlice and mamom. It helps a lot that many of her bunkmates are also at home. The test came back positive for flu, which the doctor says means that it’s probably swine. She’s on tamiflu (as are the adults for prophylaxis).

My S has also returned from CTY happily. His roommate left early with the flu, so he was really grateful to make it to the end. And he is really sad to be a “no-more”, being too old to return next year. But he and some other CTYers went to NYC this week-end BY THEMSELVES! I was quite nervous about putting him on the train alone.

I hear that Gettysburg has a nice language program.

mamom: my PM’s are not working for some reason but thanks; we do use Student Direct; I guess I could use the “edition” idea to search elsewhere…I just thought that the ISBNs would be on that site; we had never used it before…

I have used a bunch of used textbooks sites in the past, but I find that you can really get screwed up without the ISBN’s…

SlithyTove, I wish your D a speedy recovery!

EngrMom, so glad your S escaped the flu! My S went off to his second CTY session yesterday; every kid’s temperature was taken first thing.

There were definitely fewer kids expected in his dorm yesterday than in years past, and he has a single, for the first time ever, this session. That’s likely to be because it’s his fourth time at this particular site, though, rather than because of a lower-than-usual enrollment. I hope he does not take having a single as an excuse to be even messier than usual!!

If he still has the potential to be messier, you’ve done well, owlice!

Here’s wishing for good health for all the kids with summer camps.

2blue, no matter how messy a kid, there is always a way to be even messier!!

And hear hear on good health for all kids!

Rodney,
I have had really good luck buying from these places, in no particular order although half.com has been good to me this year. Do not use K12, they are so overpriced. Amazon and even the publisher had better prices for all of S’s books this year. K12 wanted $180 for his calculus book, I got 2 like new copies off half.com for $19 total delivered. His Latin book, new edition this year so I can’t used anywhere is $13 cheaper from the publisher.

good luck

[Cheap Textbook Guide - Davis Wiki](http://daviswiki.org/Cheap_Textbook_Guide)
In many cases, Campusi and AddAll show that the cheapest textbooks you’ll find are sold overseas like at amazon.com’s UK website or Blackwells in the UK.

I always verify the book being sold: has the correct ISBN number, is the correct edition, and has no writing or highlighting in it. I try to buy from individuals rather than the large used book sellers unless they are selling a new book. You would be surprised at the number of new books being sold at greatly discounted prices. You can also check Craigslist. Shop around, prices are all over the place.

mamom, what a great list! I’ll second the addall recommendation, which we’ve done very well by. I’ll keep the others to hand.

Thank you, mamom…now all I have to do is get the ISBN numbers…that should be the hard part…you have made the rest of it easy!!

At our high school, for most classes, the students get two copies of the textbook. One to keep at home and one to use in school. Has been great - we haven’t had to buy any books so far.

However, this year, they are changing to a yearly rotating schedule from the block semester scheduling they had. This means more classes of students taking the same subject at the same time - so very likely, they will not two copies of the book to give to each student. mamom - thanks for the sites, I’ll be visiting them once we get the list of books for D’s classes.

Do those of you who have to buy textbooks have kids enrolled in private schools? Our public schools provides all the books, and I would imagine there would be an outcry if parents had to buy books.

Both my kids are in private. We buy 2 copies of all the textbooks. S takes the train to school and has a short walk from the train to school. He has homework in every subject, every night. Just carrying workbooks, notebooks and binders his backpack is full and very heavy. I cannot imagine making him also lug textbooks.

My kids are in public, but like mamom we want to lighten the backpack load. Most of the time there are enough textbooks so each kid can keep a textbook at home and then use the classroom set at school, but sometimes there’s not enough for that classroom set. So we buy a book to keep at home and have the school-owned book stay on campus.

Also, the spouse is taking some professional coursework through our local university.

Thanks for the replies. It is always interesting to see how other areas of the country, other families, etc. do things. I have to drive my son to school, and think he would hate having to go to his locker each morning to fill up his backpack with books. But his pack is absolutely bursting at the seams, so I can see where other kids, particularly commuting ones, would not mind. He has a lot of homework also. I’ve read here of kids with divorced parents having copies for each household which makes a lot of sense.

For whatever reason, my S’s private Jesuit city school, banned the use of backpacks and bags during the day. The boys must go to their locker between each class to grab books and notebooks or carry it all. I guess it is what you are used to doing.

The first applications arrived, from schools where D1 has expressed some interest. She visited Reed last year, signed the visitor’s log at Columbia a few years ago on a family vacation, and I signed her up for Pitt mailings. I figure that yes, they realize that D1 isn’t a senior this year, and this is just marketing. Still, I leafed through the Pitt app to see the lay of the land. I also pointed out the total COA to the spouse. COA for a UC ranges from the low $20k range up to $28k for Cal living on campus, and it’s gotta go up more what with state’s budget problems. Pitt out of state COA is about $30k.

Slithey Tove,

I noticed that. Some of the LACs up north, when you factor in Merit and other aid, are competitive with the UCs or even cheaper, and with a tuition hike on the way they are a great alternative.
