Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

The list of community service hours went up at school and they have D down for nine. Nine for her entire HS career. I hope they recognize it as a typo. I admit that I never gave a thought to saving copies of all the community service slips she has turned in over the years. I don’t know how she would ever prove that she has far far more than nine.

Delay opening for school but D woke up at 5:30 am to check her SAT score.

I need to take a walk outside and some fresh air !!!

Suzukimomto2: Has she considered a music major in undergrad, and then an MBA. Some MBA programs are held at night, so that is more convenient. Just a thought

Good grief, missypie! That is insane. I hope you’re able to get it straightened out without too much of a problem. Does she have any idea how many hours she’s put in?

fogfog - sorry things didn’t go as planned. My S will also be taking SAT in May and SAT 2’s in June.

Missypie - hope you get everything straightened out. Perhaps if she has volunteered a lot at one particular agency that agency would be willing to sign off on a bunch of hours without proof?

fogfog and mamom, same here. I was really hoping for it to all be over with!! she did well, but if she wants enough merit aid at the schools she is interested in the scores really need to go up just a bit.

Yes
Sat and Sat2s in May June here as well…
And I think we will be scheduling the ACT…

APs are in May…

what a busy 90 days ahead…

No school yet again tomorrow. Will we have a spring break? Seems doubtful.

My son is supposed to be doing a SAT prep class but with the snowstorms we’ve been having the last two days of school and therefore prep class after school have already been canceled. No talk of a snow date yet. arrrgh.

D1’s school has a short-term college counselor who was brought in to make recommendations for the juniors. D1 was singing her praises, how the counselor had really made an effort to get to know the students (<100) well enough to make good recommendations. She told the kids, bless her soul, that she wanted to find them solid safeties that they’d love. Shades of “love thy safety”! D1 and her buddies agreed the counselor had done just that. The general reaction was first a “what the heck, I’ve never even HEARD of this place”, eventually morphing to “hmmm, I’ve read about the place, it really does sound like I’d like it.”

I just wanted to say thank you to mamom and others here who encouraged me to talk to my son about starting SAT testing in January rather than waiting until March. He ended up taking two SAT subject tests in January and did well enough on both that no retake will be necessary. It’s a huge load off his shoulders. He’ll be taking the basic SAT for the first time in March, but with the two subject tests off his plate, he now has the flexibility to do a retake of the basic SAT in June if necessary (can’t do May because of EC conflict) or, if he does well enough on the SAT in March, can use June for a third subject test (he may want to apply to a college that requires three) or just focus on his finals in June without having to worry about SATs at all. In hindsight, it’s now pretty clear how pressed he would have felt if he hadn’t gotten the two subject tests out of the way in January, so very grateful that I got the encouragement here to broach it with him and get him to agree to the January testing.

I wish I had our student take the bio subject test after honors bio (taught by an AP teacher)
because that would have been one down…

^Of course schools vary in what they teach in Honors classes, but I usually recommend taking science Subject tests after the corresponding AP course. D1 took the Chem Subject test after Honors Chem and did OK but not great, both D1 & D2 have done much better following AP courses.

fogfog - Fortunately I started reading CC when my S was in 8th or 9th grade. Many parents advised readers to consider having their kids take the SAT Subject tests as they took the related course. My S then recommended this to his classmates so now several of them have a few Subject Tests finished. I don’t understand why teachers and guidance counselors never made that recommendations. Thank you CC parents.

Lazy vacation day here. D1 is in DC on a civics initiative trip, and texted that she’s having a fab time and that the snow is fantastic. She might feel differently about it after weeks of unrelenting cold, but it’s clear by this point that cold weather is not going to scare California Girl away from areas with four seasons. It might even be an attraction. The grandparents, all local, are not at all happy to hear this.

Visited Tufts University yesterday with D. She was a bit disappointed - the info session was not that great and the tour was just ok. The campus itself looked beautiful, especially since the fresh snow on Tuesday - snow kept falling on folks as we went through the campus tour. We ate in the cafeteria - food was pretty good and my 11 yr old S loved the ice creams! D came away with the impression that Tufts had a IR, political sciences/public policy/languages emphasis and she’s looking at a science major - so I think Tufts has slipped down on her list.

I recall specifically asking the GCs if my student should take the BIO subject test and they looked at me like I had three heads–and told me that the kiddo should wait until jr/sr yr…big mistake as kiddo is focused on chem and physics etc and the honors bio taught by the AP bio teacher was wickedly difficult and kiddo would have done well on that subject test…
sigh

as for Tufts
it has an engineering program–
when we were ther the info session was fantastic–the guy was open, hillarious and very helpful–and the dean of engineering was there…
our kiddo and I thought–this is a great place…then

we took the engineering tour-

the kid giving the tour looked like he had rolled out of bed in his clothes, and complained about everything…
-how the librarey was too noisey-everybody hangs out there and no one gets work done
-how they charged for printing
-how the school had a limited # of lisences for the apps the students used and you could be on line and not able to access the program
-how the housing dept messed up the soph housing selections day

by mid way through the tour half of the group dropped off, some families opted to eat lunch and we were one of two families left–and left to head for Harvard (our kiddo was like WHY do I want to go Tufts–?)

a shame because that tour guide really influenced our kiddo to cross the school off the list…and on paper it had looked like a good fit.

arisamp, even a negative opinion counts as progress. :)

D1 toured Tufts and really really liked it, but she is not looking at engineering or sciences. Everything that I see about the student personality there matches what she’s like. Me, I like the elephant thing and how you have built-in exercise from all that hill walking.

D1 is back from her non-college-visit to DC and now says she wants to tour GW and UMCP. She saw some of GW and talked to current students and some alums from both schools. UMCP has an Environmental Science and Policy program which is making her eyes light up. I’m a little nonplussed about the idea of OOS costs at UMD versus California in-state, at, say, Davis.

With our first college visit coming up next week (GA Tech) and the folder of articles on college visits (what to do/not do) and interviews left mostly gathering dust in my S’s room, I scrambled to find an interview coach for him pronto since I knew he would not hear anything I said. Well worth the hour or so they spent together. He gave my S lots of pointers (many my H and I have told him 1000x), guidance and confidence. S actually sat down and read some of the articles after coach left and said he wanted to do some mock interviews with me. Wow! You never know what will hit their buttons.

An interview coach?? whoa! I thought we were upping the bar with SAT prep classes and making sure son has a hair cut…
