Congrats on all the new acceptances and new merit money! Sorry about the waitlist - hope it turns out to be eventual good news.

Kumitedad - sorry about the UCSD decision but fingers crossed for the others you are waiting for! And I love the idea of a final list of where all the kids end up.

OWM - hope you’re having a fabulous time. What an opportunity to recognize your son and other high achievers as well as highlight the bond between you and your son.

Happy birthday to Researcher’s D and happy belated to OWM’s grandson!

As for diets, I was stressing about it for awhile. I, too, have made some lifestyle changes that don’t seem to be effective. I’ve finally decided it’s not important… I will just strategically place myself behind one of my Ds in all pictures and no one will be the wiser!

D2 is having the time of her life in Italy - they had some excitement upon arrival when one of her friends was detained due to some passport problems. All is well now and they have seen some amazing landmarks and tomorrow is a shopping day. Nothing better for a 17 year old girl apparently than the prospect of shopping in Rome!

D1 is home for spring break and is whooping and hollering due Butler’s upset of Pitt. She’s a huge BU fan so this unexpected turn of events is really making her happy.

kathiep–That Pine Lake sounds wonderful, and Hartwick College also…

kumitedad–hopefully UCSD was not at the top portion of her list? still stings, but she has a lot of great schools still to hear from

holliesue-can’t imagine handing diplomas out, I will be teary enough just in the audience

madbean–I felt that way about our elementary(sentimental), not so much about the high school yet but that may change with D2 who is starting there in the fall, I think she will be much more involved with the high school than D1 was-D1’s activities, job etc all outside of school

aria–nice to hear positive MIT news

will say it’s “nice” to see others struggling with the weight (you know what I mean!)–there has been job loss, financial and other stress around here besides the college stuff and wow! have I struggled with “needing” the sugar and fat yummies and not enough exercise, some sun finally came out today and reminded me that summer clothes are not that far away–cue screaming

Bracket busted! Drat.
Ds team doing well at state (her not so much in her opinion, but very happy to be here - lovely parents and kids).
Will check out moon before bed.
I am half way to my weight goal - but the pace is slowing down and I am sick of the new eating/exercising regime. I find joy and comfort in food. However, I want to be a healthy middle aged/older person, so I will get back on track. Unfortunately 'tis the season for Cadbury mini eggs.
Hoping the waltz was lovely and grandma was right
On top of my job, this next week will include finishing taxes and cleaning up 5 months of dog poop in the yard. I shall hope for an early big envelope to offset them.

Congrats on the new exciting news for people! These next few days will be SO SO SO intensely high and low!!!

D got a really awesome merit/talent scholarship award in the mail today - yes, it is true that some private schools can come down below the instate publics, even without proven need. She was pretty stunned.

And one of her reaches apparently has put the news in the mail, according to their threads … I’m starting to hold my breath.

Three and a half school days until spring break, yay! She needs it, so tired and maybe getting sick on top of it. These kids are so worn out!

camathmom - It seems I’ve got UCSD’s point list burned into my brain! Their website gives a good breakdown on what they take into consideration. About 3/4 of the points are awarded for grades, scores, the amount of A-G courses taken, and ELC designation. The remaining points factor in leadership, community service, achievement/awards, very low performing high schools, first generation college students, income, personal challenges, and those who have taken several AVID-type courses. All the students need to prove that they are strong academically no matter any special challenges they might have faced, but the school tries to look beyond the scores. Plus, I think that they also reevaluate the point threshold each year, so they may increase it if need be.

That said, they have become so popular that they are having to change some of their admission requirements. I read today that UCSD is raising the required GPA from 3.0 to 3.5 next year for community college students in the transfer admission guarantee program. They just get way too many students this way. The article said 5 years ago UCSD had a little more than 400 applicants from this program, this year nearly 9,000. Overall, 53000 students applied this year for nearly 4,000 freshman openings. Crazy competitive! For my kid, I think her ELC designation helped her a lot in this process, but it is very emotional for her to see so many wonderful kids not get in.

Congrats to your D, itscomplicated! My D was accepted to UCSD also, which I really kind of expected because of the whole points approach to admissions there. I calculated her points very conservatively one time using objective factors such as ELC, GPA, SAT scores, summer enrichment programs, and determined that she was quite a bit above the expected cutoff. But, looking at the UCSD aceptance threads here, it looks like very high scoring kids are not accepted, and I wonder how that is possible? Wonder what the point cutoff is this year? Or, perhaps UCSD is becoming more holistic like UCLA or UCB?

We were shocked to see that the FA was even less than offered by UCLA, which we thought was pretty bad already. We’re kind of worried about the UCs in general in the midst of the collapse of the CA economy, but depending on the FA from privates, D may wind up at a UC.

camathmom - Congratulations to your D too!! Yeah, my point calculation went out the window when I saw some of the rejections. You are right, it does seem like UCSD is starting to blend its current system in with the holistic one.

It looks like our girls have at least two schools in common. My D didn’t get a lot of love from UCSD’s FA office, but UCLA was good to her (well, especially compared to UCSD!).

I just saw that UCSD’s Admit Day is the same day as the Bruin one…

Grats on the recent merit aid offers and sorry to kumitedad on UCSD – I hope the rest come through positive.

I think my daughter’s high school has been a great place for her, but won’t really miss it. I don’t know if my younger kids will end up at the same high school, but I’m thinking probably not. I will miss their K-8 school when the last one “graduates” from there in a little over three years. That school is definitely like a family.

I’d also love to get the shutterfly info and see owm and son waltzing, along with hopefully many more great pics of the class of 2011/2015!

He won the top scholarship! My mom screamed really loud and I was not embarrassed. It was all pretty much a blur and then I realized we still had to waltz. It was such a wonderful evening. And seeing him “cut loose” with his peers, doing the chicken dance and the electric slide–and singing “Don’t Stop Believing” at the top of his lungs was just incredible.

Our older son took tons of pictures. I’ll get them posted somehow. Time for bed now.

Wow, wow, wow OWM! Of course, we all knew he would win. I think your son also may win roller-coaster ride of the week award.

proudmomof2–Tell your D2 to wave in the general direction of the Vatican because S1 is in Rome, too, this weekend visiting his gf (who lives not far from there). Have I mentioned he’s having the absolute best time ever? Why not, it’s Italy!

EmmyBet–woohoo on the merit aid! And fingers crossed for D on the reach. She’s been doing so great.

camathmom & itscomplicated–double the woohoo on your kids’ UCSD admissions. I really think no UC admission is really assured these days.

OWM - Congratulations. You were so gracious in your congratulations to scoutson earlier. It’s wonderful that your son’s week also ended on such an up note and that he and your family were able to enjoy it.

Congratulations to all with good news and wishing future good news for those who received disappointments.

Yay! A whole page with really good news! Funny how I can feel so happy for people I’ve never even met in person! What a night OWM! And Emmybet - wooo hooo on the merit award!

My oldest son is now in England visiting friends from a college he attended when doing a study abroad his Junior year. Sounds like the weather is not the best, but he’s still enjoying himself.

fishy - what a hassle getting thos ereplacement ID’s. One step at a time. It was nice of your D’s godparents to invite her down for the summer. Will she go, can you go at least part of the time? I haven’t been teary yet, but I still have an 11yo D at home who never shuts up, so the vacuum S leaves behind will be quickly filled.

OWM - Congrats on the scholarship. I will be looking for those pictures next week.

I am jealous of those who get to participate in the graduation ceremony. How nice is that?

“OK I have set up a shutterfly group for the '11 since I am already a member of the '10 and some others.
Just PM me your e-mail address and I will add you to the group if you want to participate…Here we go it is called cc class of 2011 pictures.”

I"m not adept at using quotations so had to resort to good ole copy and paste…but you get the idea. Those of you who want access to the shutterfly account need to PM 2education so she can add you to the group.

Yay, yay, yay for OWM’s son! Soooo happy for him and his proud mom.
