Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

June-knee-at-a
I guess that’s how it looks :)

I think it’s June-knee-ah-ta. But that just might be me.

Boychild just found me on CB!

My oldest son turned 21 in late March and S2 will turn 18 next Friday (does he share a birthday with your son OWM?). I also have a 14 yo. son (high school freshman) and a 9 yo. daughter (3rd grade). We’re far from empty nesters here…and the house won’t be clean until the dog goes off to college…he’s a big shedder!

Holliesue: Congrats on the Juniata decision!! So happy for you and D. But I’m a bit jealous of each and every one who disembarks.

AmandaK: Congrats on the interview and good luck! Fingers crossed!

Ohiomom - Do you want to start the “High School Class of 2019/College Class of 2023” thread or do you want me to do it? My 9 yo wants to either be a circus clown or an art teacher. I’ve told her that by the time she gets to college planning, our community college will be it and she was ok with that because she never wants to leave her mommy. Awwww.

Congrats to Holliesue’s D! I wanted my D to consider Juniata, but we couldn’t quite get there. She’ll be at another CTCL, though.

One by one, they’ll start declaring!

I have a dilemna (I think) and I am wondering what you would do/have done. Now that the applications for admission and scholarships are done, we have several extra copies of sealed recommendation letters from a teacher and a guidance counselor. Many teachers gave references that were not in envelopes or gave a copy to my DS but one did not and the guidance counselor did not share hers.

What do you think? Open and read or not?

actually…don’t laugh…it is Jew,knee,ah,tah

their HIllel had a t-shirt that said putting the Jew in Juniata…ha ha…

But did anyone ever tell us how to pronounce Bowdoin???

I will read about Juiniata because DS’ college choice is also a CTCL.

Cutest college t-shirt: from freshman orientation a few years ago. The front of the shirt had the name of the school at the top and then a map of campus . . . but the map was upside down. That’s so the lost freshman could look down at his/her shirt and see the map!! I thought that was the cleverest thing.

Regarding DS’ Shutterfly pics posted . . . those action shots that everybody likes were taken by a professional photographer who was there that night with a camera lens the size of a dinner plate! I purchased the photos from him, and yes, he does catch some great action.

@Proudmom – My friend lived in Blanton in the fall of 78, spring of 79. That was her freshman year; after that, I think she lived off-campus. Austin in 1978 compared to Austin in 2011 is waaayyyy different!

Hollie, I love that!

Bow-din.

^^
and the “bow” in Bowdoin is like the bow on a Christmas gift, not the bow of a ship.

Anyone else doing their own grad announcement or party invites? I found an interesting site - [Graduation Invitations, Graduation Announcements, Personalized Grad Invites from Zazzle](2023 Graduation Invitations & Invitation Templates | Zazzle) Now, to come up with a date for the party!

Apparently Willamette University used to have t-shirts that read, “It’s Willamette, dammit!”

oregonianmom and seattle_mom - hope you have a great visit to Willamette. It is very near me so I’ll be thinking of you all tomorrow. Bring a raincoat!

Here’s a question for advice weigh-in: S has narrowed his choices down to 2 - one school on each coast. Just when we were arranging the visit to the distant school, he says he has decided he doesn’t need to visit as all he has read tells him the schools offer very similar programs, rigor and environment (and price with scholarships / aid) so he would just rather stay closer to home (still 5 hours away). Should we push hard for him to complete the visit or should we allow him to eliminate the school without seeing it? I feel like he needs to visit to make a fully informed decision. He and his dad feel that he is a “don’t look back” kind of guy, and will be happy to just move forward - save the $$ and time and be happy. Obviously we have to decide quickly.
Thoughts?

momofzach - I would not open the rec. IMO, if the teacher wanted it read he would not have placed it in sealed envelopes. Not that I wouldn’t want to read it, but out of respect I wouldn’t.

LOL, I would read the rec letter. We had to ask for one last rec letter toward tne end of his senkor year for a scholarship app and the letter had to be turned in with the app. I read the letter (son didn’t.) It was kind of embarrassing in its gushiness.

Good morning all…I think spring has finally arrived here!

Congrats to all the great decisions! We are off to visit the school that is 3rd on D’s list this weekend. It is a school that she did an overnight at in the fall but was not that great of an experience. She never really got to see the campus etc. So tomorrow is an admitted students day (hopefully they have food!) and she will sign up for tours etc. When she was there in the fall, H and I actually went on a tour. H went to school there and he wanted to see the changes etc. D was not too interested in going back, at first, but we thought she should visit one more time and really check the school out and then decide whether it stays on the list or not. She actually seemed excited this morning!

D did tell me this morning that after this weekend’s trip and an admitted student day next Friday - she should be able to make a decision. Ugh…I thought she was getting closer to jumping ship.

As soon as I figure out how to upload pics onto Shutterfly, I will. Probably won’t be until sometime next week though.

Momofzach - we saw one of D’s letters, by accident, the college emailed it to us. lol I don’t think I would open the envelope and read it…maybe in 4 years…

Have a great day everyone and I hope the SS Indecision folks are getting closer to shore. I don’t want to be the last one on the boat!

AmandaK- Wow! Doesn’t Class of 2023 sound so far away? Not sure if my 9 yo will make it to college…maybe I should start pushing that clown school idea. And as for your sweetie who wants to stay close to her mommy…my 14 yo used to say that. Now, not so much!

This morning: last time ever that D will dance with her drill team and her officer line. It chokes me up to think about it. Could be the last time she performs in dance, period.

cgpm - missed your friend by one year; I lived there my fall of '77/spring of '78.

kathiep - thanks for the invitation link. I ordered invites for the ceremony itself thru the school but need to get going on the snail mail invites for the party.
