Dear High Head - We may have seen your S/D at Chicago yesterday and/or today. We were very impressed - I’ll be interested in what you hear back. We had the chance to meet with a financial aid officer - basically, one must file an appeal letter, and provide any possible documentation of any possible relevance not previously provided.

We just got back home, and have a 7:30 am flight to New York for Columbia’s visiting students day (and MOMA’s Abstract Expressionist exhibit!!!). Columbia will have to be pretty special to top Chicago!

And then, we must decide . . . .

puma12 – what a gorgeous, gorgeous day it was in Salem.

D had a great visit and is over the moon with her choice of Willamette. It was one of those “first sunny spring days” that turned the lawn outside the cafeteria into a beach full of students on blankets. Apparently there was a group of streakers (we missed them, but oregonianmom and her D can tell you more ;)) Everything went well, and people were really friendly again. The icing on the cake was when a girl with purple hair yelled, “Love your hair! You have to come to Willamette!” to D from far down the quad. She’s wearing her Willamette sweatshirt and planning her courses already.

And we did meet oregonianmom and her D. Omom is nice and I am so impressed with her D! Glad to know the caliber of my D’s future classmates. :)

Hello from dry land!

My D is now officially a Bearcat at Willamette University! We went to their admitted students event today after D spent the night in a dorm with a student host last night. It was a great matchup: her host was a freshman who was also doing pre-med, so they had lots to talk about. D had a great time, and then we did the Preview Day today which sealed the deal. We put down the enrollment deposit!

We also met Seattle_Mom and her lovely daughters! I had a very nice chat with them, and will be seeing them again on move-in day! (Edit - ha ha, we posted at the same time!)

Beautiful weather (no umbrellas needed!) and I took lots of pictures. Hooray!

The fact that you two posted at nearly the same time made me smile and think that your daughters’ decisions were meant to be! Congratulations.

Seattle and Oregonian Moms -

Congratulations on the Willamette decisions! A couple of days ago, I saw the woman at my stable whose daughter went there some years ago, and mentioned to her that I was in contact with some parents considering it. She confirmed my recollection that it was a wonderful place for her D, and was a major part of who her D is today. All the best to you and yours!

Glad you girls and your D’s had a great day at Willamette!

Sounds like a great day in Salem, Oregon O-mom and seattlemom! Such a nice break in the weather, good day to be wandering a college campus. Congrats to you and your Ds on the Willamette decisions!

I think D1 has 2 favorites here in WA and 2 favorites in OR…and most of it will come down to $$ so we still have at least a 1 1/2 or 2 weeks wait here to get off the boat.

Sure hope for some good college finaid news at least as we’ve not had any other family financial good news recently.

I love the Willamette synergy! Congratulations!

Bear Cat Shout Out to OregonianMom and Seattle_mom! You did pick the perfect day to take a look! So happy for you and your D’s that the excitement is BIG and CONTAGIOUS!

Keep waving from the shore - we hope to spot land soon :)

It’s good to hear that many of the kids are starting to disembark from the SS Indecision.

Congrats to the Willamette decisions and all others posted over the past few days. It has been difficult to keep up without a scorecard!

We are off with DS on Sunday for the admitted student day at Northwestern on Monday. He thinks this is his first choice but he is very concerned that NW is on the quarter system and not on semesters. The thing he is worrying about is the late spring quarter ending date for the end of school (June) and the possible impact on summer jobs, internships, etc. His other top choice ends in mid-May and his one waitlist of interest ends in early to mid-May.

Is anyone else dealing with this quarter vs. semester issue?

^ I was in the UC quarter system 30 years ago. There was not any issue for me. I had a lot of time off between quarters and had summer jobs that paid very well. Other UC campuses also use quarter system, except Berkeley. Stanford and Caltech also are in quarter system. No problem there. Good luck with decision.

Seattle and Oregon moms-how terrific to read this! Yay!

Avon I hope he gets the answers he needs-I wish I could help!

Off to Northeastern today-I hope he still loves it after the day is over and is ready to finally commit-he is still at 99%.

Good morning all,

Congrats to Seattle mom and Oregon :)

325~Have great visit in NYC i would be surprised if CU doesn’t top UC. Let us know!
It is beautiful and sunny here already :)

Pepper~Good luck today at Northeastern :)

On our way down South ourselves…safe travels to all :D

Congrats to Seattle and Oregonian Moms! I hope your D’s love the school.

Avon- Do they help with internships? If so, I wouldn’t worry about that aspect of the quarter system. Summer jobs may be another thing though. I am hounding S to finalize his summer job plans now. S’s HS uses the quarter system and the one thing we found is it’s over before you know it. ie- don’t screw up because one bad grade and there isn’t much time to bring it back up.

Suppose to be a great spring day in Boston today. Good luck with the NU visit Pepper.

Anyone visiting BU today? 11yo D has a basketball tourny there today.

Is anybody getting on the Facebook groups for newly admitted or long-time students of their particular university. My D is debating whether it is worthwhile.

Congratulations to those disembarking! Hope the rest will soon find shore.

Good luck and save travels to all of you traveling today and tomorrow for Admitted Students events. Hope you have lovely weather and your kids find exactly what they want!

I went to college on the quarter system. All of Oregon’s public schools are on quarters. I like the quarter system a lot (I never did semesters so I don’t have anything to compare it with), but I do think that might impact summer jobs, if he doesn’t get one lined up in advance. It is something to consider.

So we saw some streakers at the college yesterday! A whole group came running by, all painted and wearing hats & masks, yelling welcome to Willamette. I took a photo! But probably won’t post it on Shutterfly… :o At the time, we were on a tour of the residence halls, and I’m pretty sure our tour guide knew this was going to happen. My D had spent the night the night before, and she had heard about the plans. It was fun. I said, to her, “Welcome to college!”

ColleegeMaw - we visited 12 schools in total all across the country (we live in Tx). She wanted seasons, no larger than 5000 students, good music/theater on campus that she could participate in but not major in, not rural, little or no greek life, didn’t care too much about athletics. My only caveat was no more than an hour extra travel from a major airport (too many horror stories about expensive flights, connections, weather issues etc).
And ideally one which gave some merit money as we would be ineligible for Financial Aid but she has worked hard and has good grades.
We were tempted to look at U of Seattle but didn’t. Other schools in PNW were more difficult to get too and so didn’t make the cut.
We visited the campus twice, once in August (Tour, info session and interview) and again after acceptance for overnight and audition. Beautiful campus, staff were extremely friendly and helpful, the few students we met were equally so. We had a gorgeous summer day and blizzards in the way of weather! Please feel free to ask if there is anything else I can help with.

happy64, are you talking about University of Puget Sound? Tried to get D to visit but she adamantly refused for no apparent reason (sigh… kids!). I thought it looked like a great option. I know someone whose son attends, and he loves it! I’m glad your D loves it too!
