Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - Original

Proudmom - hugs to you; my heart aches for the parents and classmates.

Happy congrats to those of you heading ashore! It does seem that, as far as I read, all the kids are ending up happy and excited. We are weathering these ups and down together - whether they be heartbreaking rejections, confounding FA, waitlist navigation, or just plain trouble chosing among the options - “our kids” are making their way ashore with big grins and confidence. I do trust that the right doors open even if the closed doors make no sense and cause some heartache.

We are on the boat at least until 4/25. I have a feeling I know which door my D will walk through, but she will chose after the two upcoming site visits. This must be the part where I zip my lips and stop my self from expressing a preference. The two schools (apart from academics) are polar opposites; one is in the same city as my best friend/D’s godmother and the other is the school that keeps pulling at my heartstrings and never falls off The List). Hmmm…

I am sorry to report to you future Carleton, St. Olaf, Macalester, and UofMN students that we have snow on the ground today, but at least the “ice is out” on the big lakes as of Thursday!

Happy weekend to all!

^ Speaking of which, we had several Macalester acceptances in this group, but I don’t think any of our kids chose it in the end. I wonder why? It’s a great school. I know in my D’s case, she felt similarly toward Mac and Willamette. They’re about the same size, similar campus, similar urban environment… but Willamette gave her a bunch of merit money, and Mac didn’t. And her BF doesn’t live in Minnesota…

Has anyone heard from Missypie?
Aren’t they in TX?

I got a message from a friend in TX (via Facebook) that the winds have been terrible and that there are many fires.

Hope she and all are well.

Such crazy weather
–winds and fires,
snow ^^ up north IS that normal for mid April??,
and tornados/storms in the south.
whew

Congrats to Amanda and Emmybet!

Uugh…it is cold and gray here today…Pepper, I need for you to do the sun dance for tomorrow! Although the deposit it already in tomorrow is the last admitted students day at D’s top choice. She has already visited three times but she has not told her other two top choices that she isn’t attending yet.

Congrats Emmybet, Amandakayak and lacrossemom on disembarking the SS indecision! My D is this/close to deciding on U of I as well- also in business like lacrossemom’s son.

proudmom- so sorry about the tragedy in your community.

Sadly, snow is common enough mid-April in WI … I’ve been warning our Japanese D to expect it. Maybe even a few flakes in early May.

But usually you can feel spring peeking through even some snow. Today it’s just as awful as November or March. Cold and raw.

We gathered all of our response cards and will have a wonderful ceremonial “no thanks” mailing on Monday. And we’ll send in the happy news to Adelphi, too.

But I’m not rushing to get t-shirts and all that, since we do have the WL issue. Her b-day is in July, so I think that’s when she can load up on college-wear. Adelphi has mandatory orientation just before her b-day, so she can just pick it out there.

We had a great discussion today about strategizing APs - looking at what scores actually count, which ones are perhaps more important to prep for (based on what scores she needs, how she’s doing on practice tests, what subjects she’d actually use them for). She’s being so cool about this!

And she starts rehearsing her next play May 1, a community production with an adult cast - that is such wonderful experience. Everything is getting so REAL! D1’s college graduation is May 22, so in another month we’ll be in high gear, lasting until mid-June, at least.

Fog, I believe missypie is in the Dallas area – quite a large area, but that part of the state. The closest fires to there are the ones at Possum Kingdom Lake, but that’s quite a ways west and south. I did hear that the Metroplex area had some storms a night or two ago,so maybe the electricty’s out . . . or maybe she is touring colleges. Hopefully she will turn up shortly.

“Although the deposit it already in tomorrow is the last admitted students day at D’s top choice.”

Is there always a deposit due prior to May 1? I have not found anything about a deposit for any of D’s schools. Starting to get nervous. She definitely won’t be able to make her decision until May 1 (last day of her last Admit Weekend). But, since it is a weekend, are we risking her spot by waiting?

dignified1, not all schools require a deposit. I think our kids are looking at some of the same schools and can reply online on May 1st.

Deposit or not your D schools requires a decision by May 1st 11:59pm.

I think it’s May 2 because May 1 is a Sunday.

OK momofboston consider it done! Same deal as Amanda though-gonna cost you friend for life status. :)

My son left on the bus to JFK at 2:30 PM-I just checked the flight status and they were supposed to depart at 8:55 but it is now shown at 9:24.

He didn’t want to bring a phone so I cannot reach him-I mean I was ready for a break (as was he) but this seems cold turkey separation.

The weather here is awful as well-I think in NY it’s even worse. I will not sleep well tonight.

I am not going to sleep either Pepper. My d is on a plane into JFK from Costa Rico. Supposed to arrive at 1 a.m. I am so afraid of flight problems due to the weather. The mother of the girl she is traveling with is picking them up and driving them the 4 hour trip home (we dropped them off last week). It is going to be a long night for me until my d is safe at home!

Yeah I just checked and they are having big delays down there-his flight probably won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

I’ll be thinking of you all tonight.

Yes this weather sure is wild tonight. We had some heavy winds and rain and intermittant power outages. Makes for a fun weekend no?

Everyone take care and stay warm…cold in the Pacific Northwest for this time of year also…stopped by a springtime street fair today (D1 works at the bookstore/coffeehouse in the middle of it) and everyone is dressed up like winter, even the many dogs!

Exciting to see the many kids who are arriving on shore-- Congrats to Emmybet, Amanda and lacrossemom…can’t wait til it’s our turn.
…D1 finally verbalized her 3-4 top of the list, two we’ve received final FA and still waiting on the other two–one of which we are visiting again and she’s sitting in classes on Tues, wish we’d recv’d final FA to know if we should even do the visit–even tho it’s fairly local she does NOT like to miss school and if the FA wasn’t doable we wouldn’t even go. The other visit/classes is semi local, probably #3 or 4 on her favorites, FA doable (not one of those that makes you jump up and down with excitement but doable)
Looking up grad/retention rates on that collegenavigator on the 4 schools, quite interesting

Checked D’s flight status and it says it is due to arrive on time as of now. We’ll see. I am almost more worried about the drive home. The mother driving them will most likely be pretty tired. (she is flying in from somewhere also) and driving in the middle of the night is absolutely no fun! Can’t wait for d to be safely home!!!

Safe travels for all of your kids.

Thinking of your D, hollie! I hope all is well and you can rest easy. And for Pepper’s S to have a good flight, once it actually goes.

My d made it home safe and sound at 5:30 am. Went directly to bed! Glad she is home!

Holliesue: I’m so glad to hear that your daughter got home safely.

Yesterday was a terrible day to be travelling. Pepper, I hope your son arrived safely in Spain.
