Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

bucasmom–love it that your S called about laundry, at least he is doing it!

I am much better today, a little bummed I missed the orientation activities yesterday. S has successfully launched I think…he isn’t one to share a lot and he has moved on. DH said he saw him briefly last night at one of the receptions and it looked like he was with other students, mingling and having fun.

Can’t leave you guys’ alone for a minute.

Got a sudden call to Chicago for biz yesterday - :frowning: I hate travel. And “surprise, we need you now” travel is worse.

Congrats Launchees!

ALREADY LAUNCHED!

I feel bad for my friend’s D. She didn’t get the dorm assignment she had requested and her roommate, with whom she’s been texting, seems to be a mismatch. Move in for them is tomorrow and the housing office says they will entertain requests to switch after two weeks. I can understand why they do that but this may be one of those instances where I feel the girl is trying to make my friend’s D feel uncomfortable. One of her first texts to her was “I’m an only child so sorry if I snap at you sometimes.”. And another, "well, I hope you leave room for my
stuff. " after the D texted she had packed a lot. They have equally
divided spaces. And the girl lives just 3 miles from the school. Very unusual.

I suppose a move would be the best solution if they end up not getting along but that may mean the D will have to move her things by herself or my friend will have to drive back there. Only 3 hours but still…

boysx3, thanks! I’m thrilled with the choice he made, and I do enjoy that neighborhood, it’s cute as a button with great places to eat and shop. I don’t know if my raised-little village-but-from-city kid will avail himself of the public transportation system there but there are buses to anywhere in the city right in front of campus. I hope he does. Looks like roommate has a car, though…

Yeah - that’s the question. I casually mentioned it in the car, but stopped talking at the weird looks. Just kidding. I’m goingwith, "well hellp complete stranger I’ve never met before or talked with in cyber space or in any way shape or form have any previous contact with. eyemamom - I was going to text you this morning, ut I could just envision your H and S - “You gave creepy cyper lady your real life cell phone number???!!!”

S is all moved in and we’ve had our first Target run. Still need to get an ethernet cable, but the wireless is working fine for him in the dorm. He seems really happy. We are taking older son out to look for a nice comfy chair for his room - he actually has space for it this year. He’s done being sick, but achy and tired, so I don’t expect him to have much stamina. That’s fine - I don’t have much endurance when it comes to shopping either!

Okay, we’ve launched my S by dropping him off at his pre-orientation canoe trip. Strangely, it feels good more than it feels sad, but maybe that’s because we’re able to return on Sunday for the official orientation kick-off and ceremony, so maybe my grief is temporarily delayed. He really didn’t want us to linger around, so we unpacked him, gave him some cash so he wouldn’t starve before the meal plan officially starts, and then he politely told us we could go if we wanted. H was very quiet on the way home, so I will continue to check-in on him.

Launch was relatively smooth. Very organized process, with huge bins to haul stuff into the room. Since we could, we packed D’s clothes in wardrobe boxes, already on hangers–really made things easier. D decided to loft her bed, we put an extra bookshelf under there (she hauled an 18 gallon tote full of books).

We tended to a few items on campus, went back to the room late in the day and roomie finally showed, she seems nice…I think D was tired by then and ready to have move-in day over.

RA is very nice, and happens to share D’s major. Happy to help with prof tips, pre-read papers, etc.

A little teary from time to time…and I miss her like crazy. But it will all be good…

I know I disappeared for a while… it has been absolutely grueling. I bet some of you who may remember our story wondered if it worked out for my son, and I am happy beyond belief to tell you YES!!! (Meanwhile, while the below drama played out, I dealt with a case being appealed to the S.Ct., an article being due in a national publication, and authoring a brief in a fed. appeals court… pile up of stress.)

We were never, ever able to work out S2 being able to graduate from his small – what had been nurturing – private school after he had attened it for 7 years and they had literally saved his life several times. Despite his private college counselor, psychiatrist, psychologist, language consultant, a friend of mine who is a leading disability attorney, all joining the effort… they dug in and insisted that S2 had to attend some community college classes rather than online or independent study to finish up some last credits.

In the end, we went the GED route… RIT agreed to accept the GED both for admission AND for his academic scholarship. We nearly fell apart again when it turned out there were no seats left in Maryland for him to take the GED in time to start RIT in August… but it turned out he could take it in Virginia as a non resident…

So we found a wonderful admistrator in Fairfax who waived VA’s age 18 rule, who worked with us when we applied for accommodations (private testing situation) and a mere two weeks ago he took the GED and got his scores. That was how close we cut it! And I feel after all this I am entitled to brag a bit, he got perfect scores in math and science, and his lowest score in his weak area of writing was 93rd percentile. What a relief!

So we take him up saturday to Rochester Institute of Technology, where he moves in Sunday to stary an early orientation for their Spectrum Support Services Program. RIT has been phenomenal at every level. He got every accomodation he requested, and has fallen in love with every disability and spectrum support person he has dealt with. He was granted a single room on a hallway with a private bathroom as well as a shared bathroom. he has a reduced courseload but can live in the dorms AND he was able to keep his scholarship (normally a full courseload is required) at a prorated amount, which is fine, because they prorated tuition! He is planning on taking a full courseload next quarter… he has a really hard time with transitions, so knowing he has time to adjust has been an enormous help.

You folks were such important supports to me during all of last year, I am so sorry I could not keep up the communication these last couple of critical months. It was touch and go every day as we tried to negotiate graduation from his private school, contemplated our options and steered a course for our wonderful and vulnerable son.

I still kind of am sad he couldn’t ALSO go to Beloit! But I think RIT will be perfect for him, and the depth of support he has there on campus and among our long time friends in the community is so important. He is as ready as he will every be to take this step on his journey!

I will try to drop in again soon and read about your spectacular college students!

Our launch has not started well! DS awoke this morning not feeling well. As we were getting into the car to start our 1200 mile trip, he started throwing up. It turns out his best friend has had a stomach virus for the last couple of days and ds was hanging out with him right before he got sick. We have to leave today so off we go. Already had to stop once 30 minutes into the drive. Well, at least he should be feeling better by Saturday when he moves in.

We’d planned on stopping in to see dh’s grandmother on the way, but possibly infecting 94 year old great grandma doesn’t seem like a good choice. This is going to be a long trip!

And hooray for silversas’ son and everything working out!

silversas…what a journey! S is fortunate to have such a strong and determined advocate in you. Best of luck to him at RIT!

pacNW…I sure hope S feels better soon :(

silverseas, sorry the journey has had so many rough spots, but congrats on a successful finish!

pacNW, hope he is feeling better soon!

silversas - SO glad you dropped by to update us! I have thought about your son and wondered how it all worked out. I’m so happy to see your update! Best of luck to your S at RIT!

pacnwmom - Oh no - I’mso sorry to hear that your son is sick! What a drag…

silverseas–I’m so glad you all have worked things out for your S to start at RIT next week. Good luck to him!

pacNW–oh what a stinky start to move in! It seems there’s a lot of sickness going around–are we spreading it via our computers?

Tomorrow we launch. The weepiness comes in waves. I think I’m fine and then: BOOM in the middle of the grocery store aisle it hits me that I won’t be shopping for three anymore.

D just went to store to print out photos for her room. I was happy to see she printed one of her parents along with a dozen of her friends.

launch went smoothly yesterday at FSU - @sunshinestatemom - is your daughter at FSU? If so, which dorm? We had same issue with over the door hooks being to thick… ended up balancing them on that ‘ridge’ on the wall next to closet - we’ll see how long that lasts…My son is at Wildwood - lots of students helping out. His friend who had been there for 2 days already in another dorm(snuck in with roomate who was going thru sorority rush), was bored, so she hung out and helped with the unpacking. After a few hours, we took a break, had lunch at the union, went to bank, and walked around a little. Back to dorm to finish up; hanging movie posters(he will be in the film school), shower curtain, etc. Roomie wasn’t going to get there until after dinner, so didn’t get to meet him and neither of the suite mates were there yet either. Bathroom situation - we already were potentially locking the suite mates out of the bathroom by forgetting to unlock their side when exiting the bathroom - I’m sure that is going to happen a lot in the beginning… We had to purchase stronger bike lock as recommended by the staff, but I think we had everything else. We left around 6pm to head back to Jacksonville. We left he and his friend deciding what they were going to do that night; a few more from his high school would be showing up today and tomorrow. He had a film luncheon/meeting all afternoon today, and then there were lots of activities going on around campus. Not too strange at home yet since he wasn’t here much over the last year, but I’m sure it will feel that way after a few weeks. Somewhat sad today, but busy with work, and younger son who just started HS this week came home to report on his day. I think we will all miss S1 when he’s not at the dinner table on school nights, but looking forward to parents weekend and football game in October. All in all, a very successful day/launch… Go 'Noles…

silversas – You are absolutely a force of nature! Sounds as if your S has landed in a place with an impressive support network that will allow him to reach his full potential. Best of luck to him!

DD launches tomorrow! We head to the airport in the am - arrive in Boston in the evening. Got a hotel a few miles down the road from campus. Going to hit Target for dorm stuff and then maybe hit the mall (right next to the hotel) for some warmer clothes (DD doesn’t have any). She moves in Monday morning. If I can get out of the parent stuff - I’m going to introduce myself to the Green Monster Monday afternoon. (Might have to stay to report back to the better-half, though) Return flight Tuesday am.

Reading all of these move-in stories is making me nervous.

We are listed on the launch list as launching this Saturday but it seems that people here are meaning launch to be when we leave the house with the kid and the gear…which is tomorrow AM!!! Not ready but I never will be. His two suitcases and carryon bag are now packed (whew) and by the front door and the boarding passes are printed.

We will shop at target/best buy/office depot tomorrow afternoon. Move in is 8 AM Saturday. OY!
