Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

Creekland – My comment about the clinical trial and the selling of bodily fluids was made tongue-in-cheek. These things are done assuming informed consent of the participants, although it’s usually up to the them to make sure they’re fully informed. Mulling is good.

Gotta love CrazyMom. In spite of how entertaining I think she’d be, I guess it’s probably best to start escalating this through the housing folks. There’s probably an assistant dean or some such that will eventually have to make a phone call.

It is an undue burden on him as an 18 year old to be involved in a relationship with his roommate’s mom. He could be scarred for life being involved this way.

There is no reason for him to justify himself to anyone. He can tell his roommate that he does not want any contact with his mom if he wants to deal with it directly.

^I agree. Neighbormom And her son should inform the RA and other important people about Crazymom’s antics now. Later, if and when her behavior escalates, they will already be aware of this woman. I would be livid if my child were being harassed.

Never heard “scarred for life” in the context of events in the life of an 18 year old before.

From a guys perspective? I would laugh at room mates mom. That would probably end any further outreach.

One of my son’s best buddies could be neighbor’s boy’s roomie except he is wisely going to school six hours from home. All through high school, this wonderful, smart, talented, funny kid was subjected to strict (and inconsistent) restrictions and punishments by his father (and supported by his Mom). The rest of the parents in my sons group of friends were aghast and whenever possible tried to get him away from his house with overnights as a respite. One family who lived near him told him flat out that if things got too bad, he had a safe place at their home to stay. His folks considered us OK for him to stay overnight with because we are engineers (huh?). Anyway, this kid has launched and we are all hoping he can handle the responsibility of personal freedom (which he was never allowed to practice).

My daughter and her roommate would like to loft their beds - does anyone know how to do that? I’m sure she will find out once she’s there but a little advance knowledge would help (especially if it means needing my husband to be mechanical!)
Thanks!

amtc --

At my daughter’s school, the beds are on tall legs and there are brackets that let you adjust the bed rails to different heights.

In places where the bed rails aren’t adjustable, you can buy plastic blocks that the bed legs sit in to raise the bed. (In the “old days”, I saw people loft using concrete blocks.) Lately, I’ve seen that these plastic lofting blocks are stackable so you can use two sets and raise it by twice the amount.

amtc – exactly what mathinokc said. I’ve seen the bed risers for sale in Bed, Bath, & Beyond, and in Walmart. We didn’t need them for my D’s bed (height adjustable), but we used a set to “loft” an over-the-bed shelving unit.

Better buy them now if you think you might need them – I saw that our Target was dismantling it’s back-to-school section yesterday!

“Never heard “scarred for life” in the context of events in the life of an 18 year old before.”

there wont be any shrinks making a living if that does not happen. She is the equivalent of an abusive stepmom.

I would amend Geogirl1’s statement:
“I am a college student who happens to live in a room with your son. Please stop texting/calling/emailing me.”

No need to open the “we need to work out”. That sounds like he is willing to have some contact with CrazyMom. I agree, just repeat as needed…and get to an RA, with the texts/emails. It is too bad these folks don’t live further away. If it was my kid, I’d suggest the phrase, and have them contact the RA, Student Life, whatever. And suggest that the roomie be the one moving if necessary (D hates the whole move process).

Creekland–

part of what is setting off flashing red lights and warning sirens with respect to the vaccine trial is that the compensation being offered is so out of line with ordinary amounts of compensation.

$750 ??? Really?

My sons have sometimes taken part in “studies” on campus to pick up some extra $$$ but never received anything near that amount…I think the most was $90 once, and it was for 3 sessions.

Psych departments always seems to be looking for human lab rats…

But this set up just makes me all kinds of uncomfortable.

What kind of liability waivers are buried in the paperwork?

I am passing all of your ideas on to my neighbor !!!

Luckily neighborboy is not so much intimidated as annoyed by his roomie’s mom. He has told his mom that his roomie has no backbone and needs to grow…( a different portion of his anatomy).

This weekend could end up being very interesting. If General Mom should happen to decree that high school son should be sleeping over in the room this weekend, my neighbor has already recruited her nephew (neighborboy’s cousin) to sleep over in the room this weekend as well–he is waiting until it is time for him to return to Northwestern, where he will be a sophomore. He will bring his own air mattress.
Cousin is really looking forward to having an on-campus weekend with all of his high school friends who go to this large state school–after all, you can’t really let loose at home with all the parents around, right?

She really liked the idea of deliberately staining his comforter…

Raising the bed 2-3 feet higher from the floor can be done with adjustable bunks or either plastic or wooden risers.

If you actually want to “loft” the bed so that’s it at the equivalent height of a top bunk bed (maybe 3 ft from ceiling), you’ll need to contact the ResLife/RA regarding the proper equipment to use. It’s provided by the college to make sure everyone is using safe equipment approved by the college. At D’s college, they told us lofting equipment was available in limited supplies from ResLife. He who hesitates about it might lose out.

Wife talked to D on phone, and I listened in. I know it’s just psychological, but D seemed an adult to me beyond what she had before. Really impressive. Wife had feared she (wife) wouldn’t be able to talk on the phone (had texted and emailed before) without breaking into tears, but all went well.

I spoke to my son numerous times today as he was registering for classes at his scheduled time on line. Why does this have to be such an ordeal. It was so frustrating for him to work out a schedule based on classes that seemed to have availailities and then find out he was closed out of classes as he actually input them. The main issue is that Columbia has this core schedule and two of the first semester classes you are assigned specific sections and then you have to plan your schedule around those…then he had the entry class for his major so those were non-negotiable. Then a language - which he did not get but his first choice but substituted another language for which I never knew he had any interest in…:frowning:
So that makes up 15 credits - he said he does not want to feel like a slacker only taking 4 classes so signed up for a calculus class too - in addition to trying out for a fall sport. I suggested waiting with the math class if he makes the sport (long shot in my opinion but what do I know). so each permutation of the schedule warranted a phone call and then I got to speak with him again as he was buying books…good thing there is an add/drop period!
I am finding out most of my information from his older sister - they speak and skype - and then she fills us in on some highlights. I can’t ask too many questions otherwise that avenue may shut down too. But he seems happy (aside from the stress of registering today) and bonding with others -

Thanks everyone. Yes, I have the BBB lifts but I thought lofting was more like woody35 said, bringing the bed up high enough to put a couch or your dresser or something like that under it. We’ll see what the situation is, maybe they do have adjustable bed rails.

Just got home from launching S1 at Rutgers(we are so lucky to live 20 minutes away). We’re also lucky that he is in special interest housing, only about 10% of the students were moving in, and it seemed crowded as the morning went on, I can’t imagine what a zoo it will be when the other 90% move in tomorrow.
It was very organized, lot’s of helpers. They have a cute knighting ceremony they do for the freshmen (Rutgers team is the Scarlett Knights).
We got there @ 8:30am and the roomate didn’t show up until 11:30am, so unpacking was easy and my S deffinetly chose the better side of the room
After all the worry re crazy facebook posts, roomate seemed ok, very polite, we’ll see how it goes. His big brother dropped him off and did not even stay to say hello, so no crazy parent stories here. Rutgers has no special parent welcomes/programs at move in, so we just went out to lunch and that was it.
I did get a wow Mom, you really thought of everyhthing after we were done unpacking - and I said it’s all thanks to CC!

Launched yesterday - congratulations, Gwen Fairfax and glopop11!

Launching today - Best wishes for a smooth move in, elka67 and Swimmomonthego!

I have no idea what the “normal” compensation for a trial vaccination study is. I know all their “lab rat” studies otherwise seemed in line with what I got in college many moons ago - allowing for inflation, of course.

I have no idea on the liability paperwork either. He just mentioned the whole thing to me in an e-mail as part of the e-mail, not a specific topic. I sent him one back with my concerns (safety) and the couple of pros (if it works and he is a dr, etc) and will see what he says. I don’t think he has signed up yet. I think he was just looking at options, but one never really knows I suppose.

Otherwise, I’m really curious to know how things go with General Mom this weekend. I feel like I’m hooked on a soap opera, but this is far more interesting since it’s real (and more fun since it’s happening to someone else). I do know some parents who have never let their kids order for themselves in a restaurant… I haven’t seen them lately. Now I’m wondering if they’ve mellowed out a bit or not.

I wonder if it’s this study: [Rochester Victory Alliance](http://www.rochestervictoryalliance.org/)

It estimates a total of $750-900 based on time involved. It looks like you have to check in monthly for an hour long appointment/interview/injection for about 18 months, so $750 doesn’t seem crazy.

As far as General Mom - I agree with what many here have suggested. A short non-engaging answer, like “I am a college student who happens to live in a room with your son. Please stop texting/calling/emailing me” seems good. I’d also copy the RA too (after talking to him/her about the issue), so he/she is seeing the emails being sent and has a record also. And seeing the RA copied on the email may give the GenMom pause as far as further communications. I’d encourage S to handle it rather than handle it myself, at this point.

My niece had similar roommate issues. The roommate was nice enough, but the mom was crazy. She expected niece to keep tabs on the roommate, and not let her sleep with her boyfriend. By the end of the year, she was emailing niece about how she was a bad influence on roommate. They got along “OK” and found different roommates after freshman year.
