CluelessinSea, my D was also accepted to Drew. It’s less than an hour from our house and she has visited a few times. We got some money but really not enough given how expensive it is. She is going to apply for some more scholarships and see if she can get the cost down. I’m happy to answer questions. It’s a beautiful campus.

Leacoop - that is some amazing $! I second the thought that an accepted students day - or maybe an overnight visit - might improve his impression. “Practice child” made me laugh.
I stated a couple of weeks ago that I wouldn’t be starting on DS’15 for a while. Well that’s not working out so well. The college mail is pouring in and last week I had to get him signed up with College Board and registered for an SATII for Spring. Really thought I would get a breather! I’ve learned a lot in the past year - but of course he is very much a horse of a different color - so I will have a lot more to learn to help with his search.

DS13 is excited now!!! Took a couple of days for him to get used to the idea but now he is online buying shirts and hats from the bookstore and telling everyone where he is going to school! Such a relief. I don’t know if it would have been worse to pass up the $$$ or to figure out how to pay 4x’s as much to send him to the other school. I may actually get a good night sleep for the first time in months.

I have a DS17, too. I’ve already started working on his plan - which classes to take in high school to get into the type of college he wants. He just rolls his eyes at me but I’m not making the same mistakes the second time around! Although it did work out in the end. I couldn’t have done it without all the great ideas and advice from this group. Thank you all!

@ Leacoop: Your son is literally “trying on” this decision, that’s so wonderful! Congrats on his excitement, and good sense about accepting an extraordinary scholarship offer.

Dying to know which college it is that was so generous, but you can message me if you want. I understand the need for anonymity on CC…

I have to say I’m quite curious too! I’m glad it’s worked out!

Heavylidded, I just wanted to chime in from the 2012 thread and say I am so happy for your daughter (and you!) Doesn’t it feel wonderful for her to have choices? And to feel wanted? I know she will flourish wherever she decides to attend. :)

Just checking in to report we’re pretty much on our last day of thumb-twiddling. Last two decisions were due today (one was posted at midnight–another deferral!–and the other will be posted at 5 PM). I am kind of looking forward to having this part of the process over. Bottom line is of 15 applications, he had two outright rejections, four deferrals, eight acceptances, and the final one we’ll hear about later today.

On to the visits! We already have four scheduled, and another two pencilled in. Time to start the winnowing process. #andsoitgoes

MyLB - sounds to me like you did the right number of targets, reaches, and safeties to get an 8-2-4 result with one left to go. We’re 4-1-2 and waiting on three new ones and to hear from the two deferrals. We’ve got four weeks for the next result, six weeks for the two deferrals and eight weeks for the last.

We’ve got three visits scheduled and went on one earlier this week which helped eliminate that school. They’ll help the waiting time go quickly.

Thanks, bkb. I’m curious about this next phase. DS was happy to have me and others make suggestions for schools to apply to, including some schools he’d never heard of. It’ll be interesting to see what he thinks about them when he actually experiences them.

An acceptance at Miami U (Ohio) came in last night! I guess we may be visiting Ohio afterall, to include MU and OWU… Not until April, though. I agree that spacing out visits during this waiting time does help it (and senior year) go by more quickly.

Jane345 - DS1 is a sophomore at Miami and loves it! DS2 was also accepted and I’d love for him to follow but he’ll probably go elsewhere out of DS1’s shadow. PM me if you have any questions.

Ha ha! My DS2 is a sophomore at Miami too! However, DS3 got deferred, which was actually better than we expected. We will do a tour (although he’s been there before) since we’ll be visiting Oxford after our Wooster/OWU visits.

My DS’s first semester grades came out today. He got a 90.375 for the semester. Calculated into his current GPA, I think he ends up with a 3.36.

Don’t know if that will be enough to get him off the Undeclared status and into the College of Engineering at Umass Amherst but we shall see.

DS accepted to Goucher! So excited for him. We haven’t visited, but it just feels right on paper. Don’t know the details (i.e., if merit), he just got an email about 45 minutes ago. I wasn’t expecting an email, the letters are supposed to go out today.

In the meantime, I made all the arrangements to visit OWU and Wooster in three weeks. Using points for hotels and airfare not too bad. Car sure is expensive, though.

bkbmom: thanks for the offer of more info about Miami. I will take you up on it when we are planning a visit. It’s always great to have firsthand info from a current parent!

pkd, congratulations on Goucher!!

Congrats on Miami and Goucher acceptances!

Well we ended on a high note. The last school we heard from was a yes (:)), so we’re adding Wofford to the list. We’ll be at Guilford on Monday, so trying to squeeze in a quick visit to Wofford on Tuesday, which is only 2.5 hours away.

Goucher is a great school but just did not click with the one of my kids who visited. I liked the mandatory study abroad but it seemed to be a very involved, politically active student body, which was kinda not DS’s thing. They’ve carved out a nice little green space but it’s right up the street from strip malls/office buildings. Of course YMMV.

MyLB, congrats re Wofford! Awesome school!
(and I truly apologize about my seemingly insensitive posting of my kid’s Miami decision…If had realized that your posting about a “midnight” deferral was maybe the same school my son had heard from, I would not have posted this bit of news. My son had told me the decision was posted at 9 pm, so my west-coast brain did not make that connection that it was the same college. Forehead slap!)

DS is in at Goucher, his first choice! He’s thrilled and we are very proud of him, despite an unexpected grade on his report card. I appreciate S receiving an email and not having to wait for snail mail mailed Monday. I hope others who were waiting on Goucher had acceptances too.

At this time last year, I never would have imagined that my son would be accepted to college-period!

This is the only thread I read and I find myself almost as anxious to hear about all of your news as I am for news of my own child.

It’s nice to be done, too. I love EA.

Good luck, everyone!
