My youngest DD went to Freshman orientation today. Since I'm on CC quite a bit for my older DD (who is a member of the HS class of 2010) I figured I would start a thread for my younger DD's cohort.

I've already figured out a number of things through trial and error with my oldest that will help the process with my youngest (isn't that always the case ;) and I figured there have to be others on this board with kids in this class (especially since 2011 & 2012 already have their own threads.)

4 years of posts could get a little long...
RobD

Yeah, freshman orientation was today. It was pretty sweet: my older DD was there to order her transcripts & to pick little sister up; she ended up showing my younger DD & all her friends where there classes were.

I think the biggest thing I’m going to be aware of that I wasn’t with my oldest is the SAT II’s. I had no idea about them, and my oldest didn’t take them when she “should” have. She didn’t need them in the end, but it added a little stress to the end of Junior year.

Omg RobD and YDS, I’m a part of this family too. I had to reread the thread. Is this really for rising HS Freshman!!. Woot. Here’s to another kid with a different path! Thanks for this thread!

same here, youngest had his orientation for grade 9 yesterday. school starts monday. while the middle one is class of 2010 and ready to start apps as soon as we have his schedule!
youngest is totally different with no wish to even go to college.

I’m one with a high school class of 2013- last one! Wow will be in high school! Can’t believe it. School starts after labor day. It goes so very fast doesn’t it? He cannot wait until number 2 heads off to college in a year so he can be an “only” for awhile instead of the “youngest!”

Single mom and can’t believe it!! Must admit I am a little nervous since I am doing this solo!! Oh well knowledge is power. We are in NYC and she will be in one of the Specialized high schools. To the poster who wrote about the SAT ll…You are so right. Those subject tests are very important. My daughter has to take Biology at the end of her freshman year. The school on their website advises students who want to take the subject test to do it right after they finish the course; that way the material will be fresh in their minds.
That said, I guess we are on a journey together. The key is to be organized. I will try to visit schools with her beginning next year…can’t do all in one year because of finances.
Don’t forget summer!!! jobs or enrichment programs even volunteering. All we can do is encourage them its up to them to make the grade. Good luck to all!

Attended the Freshman Parent Tea yesterday afternoon. It was very relaxing for me as I also have a Senior, but there was tension in the faces of those whose oldest were attending HS for the first time. The principal and administrators who spoke mentioned a few times “we know you’re nervous about your child coming to the HS” but I’m not. I’m so happy that both my kids are going to be in the same school for a year; 1st time since my youngest was in 1st grade.

good to know about the biology SATII exam FriendlyElse; I was wondering about that as DD2 is taking Biology Honors this year.

Another 2013 parent here
Son gets his schedule at registration tomorrow. Hope it all goes as planned…
He already has one SAT II down his belt. He did apply to keep it on his officail record and so far…it is there
I will have much more to share in the weeks to come. This is my oldest child and for the first time entering the public school system. The amount of paperwork for tomorrow is something! Never had to fill out that many pages!

Trying not to look too OCD, but my daughter is HS class 2014, so I’ll just peek in on this thread until one is created for us

I have been visiting this site for over a year now and am so glad that i did start early. I have learned so many things. Glad I didn’t wait until she was a junior or senior before finding out these things - she surely would have been behind the eight ball on some things.

Tried to help my nieces and nephews with their experiences with the knowledge I’ve achieved from CC.

p.s. - daughter doesn’t know about my visits to this site - wouldn’t want to scare her :)

Hi sydsim and welcome.
I am also glad I found this site two years ago, I have learned soooooo much here!
Since neither my husband or I completed any schooling in the US, it is all very new to me and I learn as I go.

I feel really happy and almost elated today. Ds and I went to registration and there were no problems with scheduling! DS got all the classes he was hoping for! Imagine that!
He will be on a block schedule , A and B days, and his classes look like this:

Spanish III
Language Arts 10 Honors
Biology Honors
PE
Human Geography for Life Honors
Physics Honors (which will probably be AP Physics B a month after the school starts)
AP Calculus BC
Debate

DS in new to the school so there will be lots to learn.

Question about SAT Biology - are you supposed to take it after Biology Honors or is it better to wait till AP Biology is done?
Also - AP Human Geography - when is it best to take this test?

Might as well sign up here!!! I have an incoming HS freshman AND an incoming college freshman, D’s that are 4 1/2 years apart in age and can’t be any further apart in personality, interests, etc. Let’s just say that they were blessed with different gifts - they are both great kids.

D2 has her HS orientation on the 2nd, and she is SO ready. I think she will do great since none of her teachers this year had her sister, and don’t get me started about faculty unfairly comparing siblings. I think D2 was so glad to get out of MS because of that!

Hopefully we will all still be posting four years from now when our S’s and D’s go off to college.

DD2 hasn’t had to walk in too much of DD1’s shadow; we did a relo 6 years ago and are now in a pretty big district. She only had 1 teacher in MS that her sister did and this year it looks like she’ll only have one repeat teacher (and quite frankly, she’s close to senile, so I’m sure she won’t remember DD1 :)

Last day of vacation is tomorrow. 1st day of Freshman year (and Senior Year for my oldest) is Thursday.

Going through this together will be so much fun. I’m a little in denial that my baby is starting high school next week :D

I also have a S in the class of 2010 and even one in the class of 2009 headed off to college next week. They are all 3 so different from each other; might as well throw out the playbook after each one gets through the process ;)

Our HS does not start till the 24th.
For my DS it will be a huge change. Always driven to school, now will take public transit on most days. His schools so far have been small private/charter kind. New HS is public and huge - close to 2500.

Rachacha, so we both have kids about the same ages apart: my oldest S is about 4-1/2 years older than my freshman D. Thrown in the mix is a “surprise” S who will graduate in 2010.

My D is dreading the day my 2nd S goes off to college. She claims it will be so incredibly boring at home with him gone. I secretly believe she is right :D. He’s the comedian of the family and dotes on his younger S. Probably she’ll be so busy she won’t notice much.

And, she will get the car to herself for 2 whole years while the brothers are off at college. What a prize in this family :)

Hi there. My DS started school on Monday. So far, so good. My DD is starting her junior year in college. I was on this site quite a lot during her college application time. I didn’t post much, but I followed the discussions quite a bit and got a LOT of great information. I hope to be more active this time around. While my DS is a very good student, he isn’t as self-motivated as his sister was. I’ve tried to stress that everything he does from now on in school counts (no pressure, lol!) Middle school really doesn’t matter in the big scheme of things, but everything these kids do as freshman will affect what they do when it comes to applying for college (GPA’s, activities, etc.) Kelowna…is your son really taking AP Calculus BC??? As a freshman?? My daughter took it as a senior. If he’s taking it as a freshman, what math classes will he take the rest of high school? As for the SAT II Biology test…I would love some more information about that. My DD took it as a senior after AP Biology. Does freshman biology really cover the material on the SAT II?
