Parents of the HS Class of 2013

D13 was formerly D12 before she changed to her IB boarding school this year and had to add a year. So we’ve already done the PSAT - 4 points short of the NMSF cutoff in our state last year and very frustrating since she did better on the SAT the weekend prior to the PSAT. Oh well… She’s signed up to take the SAT again this January in hopes of improving her math score. She’d like to get into the 2200 range. I think she’s had a better math teacher this year and IB math does review many of the courses she already had so it is a possibility. The crazy thing is that she called me yesterday to tell me that she had just added a 7th subject to her IB program. Now she has 4 higher levels and 3 standard levels. She had been frustrated with her current language course so added the language that she learned on exchange a couple years ago. I hope she doesn’t make her life too difficult. Hang in there, everyone waiting for PSAT scores. I hope the results are less frustrating than ours have been (our first two kids have both scored less than 10 points short).

I feel like we have nearly the same son! Today ended the trimester. Grades are horrible, except for AP Calc. AP Calc only counted 2 homework assignments in the grade. Son does great in class discussion and on tests, but can’t get homework in. He was missing 22 English assignments!!! He got half in this week, but it makes me crazy that he COULD get an A if he just turned stuff in.

Since every one is waiting for the PSAT result, I thought I will share a link which I found in cc today here.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1251440-psat-results.html</a></p>

Looks like the schools are getting it now…so soon we will get it too? Me too, like most parents here- waiting anxiously.

Well, we just returned from S’13’s college visit to Oklahoma City U and decided that this will be our last college visit. Son had same response as he did to every other college he has seen, it was “fine.” I asked if he even cared about the campus - he said no. His only requirement apparently is that it must have a completely separate School of music or conservatory. Other than that, it’s going to depend on whether he clicks with the teacher and we won’t know that until after auditions. So…no more college visits for us. Luckily, this trip didn’t cost us anymore than a tank of gas and a lunch.

DD and I have been starting to look at schools more closely, figuring what her GPA would be per their calculations. I really am feeling overwhelmed! After reading all the posts here, I think we are looking at her taking the SAT’s in march and June. Not sure about ACT.

I am planning our summer trip.I plan to start a separate post, to get more input, about our proposed schedule. At this point, we plan to tour U of Kentucky, Marshall, U of Tennessee, Clemson, Auburn, U of SC, "Bama, and Ole Miss. "Bama is probably not in the running, but we’ll basically drive by it, so why not!! Hopefully we’ll also get to do a little sightseeing (for mom)

We were talking about Naviance (?) before. I don’t know if you saw this thread on CC but it is admission data from a public high school in a wealthy area of Los Angeles. I found it interesting. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1250132-admission-stats-los-angeles-school.html</a> Our high school is about 30 miles south of here, but the demographics are dramatically different.

Good luck tomorrow to all the test-takers! :D

My son has decided that he isn’t taking the subject tests tomorrow. Given that he waited until the week of Thanksgiving to prep for Biology and World History, he is feeling terribly unprepared. Lol. He is now complaining that none of the schools on “his” list even require SAT IIs so why did I sign him up. Especially without consulting with him first. Amazing what it takes to get him interested.

reeinaz, my S’11 refused to apply anywhere that required SAT II’s. Having 2 motivated girls and one not-so-motivated boy, I feel your pain! However, as a freshman in college, he is taking an interest in his future and picking his classes, etc, to maximize his experience there. (Of course, he only had 1 school on ‘his’ list - I made him add 2 more.)

Waiting on PSAT here, too. But college mail has begun trickling in. Does the selectivity of the college you get mail from give you a clue about what the PSAT scores might be? Because if so, I don’t think my S’13 did so well…

I don’t think so, NEA. My older ds got mail from all level of places.

Ugh! Could kill my Dh this morning. He didn’t turn his alarm off properly yesterday so it went off this morning AT 4:50 AM!! He fell right back asleep. ARGH!! Being that this is the “official SAT” morning, I then began worrying, tossing and turning and finally just got up a little after 5. I’m bundled up in my 62 degree house trying not to be bitter. ;-)

I’ll be getting D up in a little while so it’s probably just as well that I’ve got a head start and can get myself in a pleasant and supportive mood. I’ll make her a nice breakfast and some hot chocolate. This is the first time I’ve wished she was a coffee drinker!

It is hitting me that this is the first major concrete step toward the college application. Obviously everything else counts- the research, the visits, the grades for sure. But this test- they will look at this number and it will play a big part in a Yes or No answer. And it is also a big step toward the biggest step of letting her go. Waaaah.

I really feel for her today. The pressure has got to feel just tremendous. Please God, just help me to support her in the way that would suit her best.

Sending best of luck to all the 13ers testing today. And to their parents!

There’s a little box that can be checked off that says “Quote original message in your reply” or something to that effect. But then I don’t see the message there when I submit my reply. How do you quote? Even better, how do you quote just a PART of someone’s message in your reply?

Thanks.

So I emailed S’s GC about the PSAT code . . . she emailed back that they normally don’t get them until right before break, but she’ll get either the code or the paper test to me as soon as she sees them. Trying to be patient . . .

@megpmom - We went to Johns Hopkins last summer and my S was the same way; that’s why we’ll wait to visit only his top 3 contenders next spring. He’s spent time at the Naval Academy, Ohio State and UMich . . . they are all “fine.” He is so easygoing - I can’t see him being unhappy anywhere.

@MomofNEA - I wondered about that, so I looked it up on Collegeboard. Schools can buy names/addresss/emails based on gpa, major, geography, or a range of scores.

Good luck to all the test takers! We’ve got the ACT next Saturday.

You can use BB Code. I think it explains it here:

[College Confidential - BB Code List](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/misc.php?do=bbcode)

D is taking the SAT right now. I had half been expecting her to be a bit nervous about it, but she seemed quite unperturbed this morning and last night.

My DS is taking the SAT right now as well. This is his second time and he hasn’t had time to review so I hope he does better than last year when he took it as a sophomore in the spring as a baseline. He said he has been taught everything that is on the test at some point in his 10.5 years of schooling and doesn’t think studying will help him. I have paid for the CB SAT online preptests and he has the SAT study guides but won’t use them. I read somewhere if you take it more than 3 times, it looks like you are trying for a high score - I’m not sure if that is true or even why that’s a bad thing?

OK, let’s see if I understood the instructions.

Vandygrad, just remember to come here and get support from the other parents. This is my second kid going through this and I definitely feel for the first-timers.

DD is also taking SAT right now. This is her second attempt. She did well overall last time despite her proctor shorting them on time for the essay. She has a good score in the bank now so the pressure is off but I know she can do even better. I know she is well prepared.

Good luck to the others taking it today. Now we must wait until December 22nd for scores. There is no sense asking DD how she felt she did on it because I know the answer will be ‘fine’.

My DD’s GC can hardly spell P-S-A-T so there is no use asking her about those scores. We’ll get them when we get them.

Good luck to all the test-takers! S3 is taking the test today too! He was in a play last night and they went out afterward, so he didn’t get home until after midnight. But, he seemed fine this morning.
