Drama in the Debate club and the announcement that the fall musical will be Thoroughly Modern Millie will probably change my daughter’s major EC for next year (based on auditions of course). I’m thrilled, much less conflict with dance, schedule wise - and it became clear to me that while d could do very well in Debate, the coaches aren’t very adult in their leadership. Lots of bizarre shenanigans went on, including d being left out of the yearbook though she received the highest $ amount in scholarship money and had the highest win percentage on the team. Apparently, having a lifetime commitment to something like dance is a bad thing in their eyes?

Kelowna - wow, aviation camp and actually flying stuff? Yikes!

My son would love Aviation Camp – can you give me some details – where, age requirement, etc. My son is in Civil Air Patrol, but too young (he’s 14) for the flight training. He did get to ride in a KC-10 last week :)

And, your son’s schedule is insane! My son’s school doesn’t even offer 8 courses – he is limited to 7 slots - no block scheduling. At the rate your son’s going, do you think he may opt for early college or Simon’s Rock?

I’ve let my kids veg their first week out of school & I am not happy. My house is a pigsty and coming home from work to find kids still in pjs is not cutting it. SIGH. All 3 kids are “away” at various locations next week and we all agreed our “real” summer schedule will begin 06/28 – with lots of chores mixed in with the sleeping, TV and game playing.

Longhaul I am not looking forward to when all 3 are home all day, I imagine we’ll be having similar pigsty battles!

My D10 got to fly a plane in her engineering class last year and loved it - I’d love my S15 to get involved in that as well.

We’re not 100% what D13’s schedule will be because her GC seems to keep forgeting a class when she puts it together so we’re worried there will be conflicts but we’ll just wait and see! She’s taking a fairly relaxed/art heavy schedule but if it makes her come alive in what she’s taking I’m fine with it, it will just be a completely different road than the one just traveled with D10!

Yikes guys! I know!!! I hate it as much as he loves it!
He has survived the camp, or should I have said I have survived it I was not able to attent the farewell barbecue, as I had to be with my daughter at a different camp
Yes, My kid that belongs to this thread absolutely LOVES flying!
Longhaul - I will give you the details by PM, but basically it was 3 hours of airplane and 3 hours of chopper for $100 I know, it sounds insane, room and board for a week was included.
We are off to visit CalTech in a couple of weeks. Then it will be the debate camp for him.
Yes, I know that the schedule looks insane and I do worry about it! Like I have said, I took him to see his GC with me and she was absolutely on his side …
Ohh, and I will be living in a desert with younger teens…wish me luck…Best Friends is calling on my younger kid an her friend…

Hope everyone is enjoying their summer. S is much busier than we had planned. His web design business is booming. Each new client has been referred by someone he is already working with. He received his first check yesterday and you wouldn’t believe how excited.

Volunteering at the hospital has been an eye opener and not necessary all good. But he enjoys the opportunity to talk to the patients and is learning a lot from them. He had a goat farmer the other day and said the man was one of the most interesting people he had ever met.

DogsandBirds – WOW – Your son is doing great! Such an amazing summer for him and it isn’t even half over yet.

Kelowna – I tried to pm re camp, but your box is full.

This summer is much different than we planned & turns out it is good S2013 didn’t get a job – my Dad had knee surgery & my hubby was just informed they need to work 50+ hours a week, so Son is really needed to take care of things at my parents house & at home. He has been very pleasant lately too. Now if we can just get him on a normal person’s time schedule rather than bed in the a.m. and up for the day close to p.m.

Chiming in to say that D’13s summer has been quite full so far. She’s away at her 2 week program at Vanderbilt & I’ll pick her up Friday morning. Then it’s off early Sunday morning for a week with our youth group. After that the only thing on her calendar is volunteering for Vacation Bible School & catching up with her sleep :)

She informed me that she won’t be applying to Vanderbilt because it’s too close to home, “no offense, Mom!” which is fine with me. She does like their dorms though The class seems to have opened her eyes to some options which is great.

RobD I get the same thing about a few local schools for S. He would like to be close enough to come home for a weekend but not close enough for a day. Of course this changes day to day. Notre Dame seems to be the favored school right now.

Haven’t posted here in a while. Greetings everyone!

S2 is on a church mission trip with D1 ('12er) this week. He’ll be joining a summer activity in progress when he gets back. We got the result of his cello audition for a local youth symphony back…in again at his current group, but waitlisted for the higher level one that he was aiming for. He’s decided against rejoining his current group, but will stay on the waitlist for the higher one in case of a miracle. He’s looking forward to a lot of basketball time with his friends this summer.

PCP: D’13 is going on a church outreach project starting Sunday; she arrives home from Vandy tomorrow morning & then has time to pet the cat, do laundry, repack and eat a steak D’10 is running around now to finish picking up supplies needed for that trip.

I think she’s going to collapse into a gelatinous lump when she gets home with church. And her cat has a little bald spot on one of his ears from the stress of her being gone :(

DandB, that’s great about your son’s business!

Ds2 today finishes his volunteer stint at the monthlong summer camp. For the first time (this was his third or fourth year), he was the only volunteer, and I think he liked being the go-to guy.

In 10 days, he’ll start his three-week camp, which he LOVES. This is his final year as he’s aging out; he has so much fun there, academically and socially.

The Monday after he gets back (ends on a Friday), he starts driver’s ed.

Wow! Just reading your kids’ schedules wears me out! My 14 yr old is spending the summer playing video games, building lego models, swimming and eating me out of house and home. The only “scheduled” activity is weekly voice lessons and one week of All State choir prep. Although he has mentioned the possibility of getting a job…my fingers are crossed.

Ha, ha megpmom- my kid is also spending his summer playing video/computer games
Luckily this last week his violin teacher lend him a new book, number one in a series.
Now we have visited libraries in two counties and he has read three books in two days !
Hitting the road on Monday, lots of books with him ;)

Add my '13er to the more relaxed summer route! The pool seems to be the main time commitment but she aged out of a fair number of programs and others didn’t work out so she’s working on some options but so far it’s the home route. In some ways I think it is good because it has made her much more motivated to find options early for next summer but last summer was packed to the brim so I think that was part of the revolt for this summer. She’s doing some things with her youth group, day trips and such. So far so good, we’ll see how I feel in a couple weeks when this all may grow old :)

Shillyshally: last summer D’13 had aged out of one of her mainstay summer events & I heard “I’m bored” a number of times, especially since it was the first summer I worked f/t and her sister was away for 3 weeks. So this year, I made sure that she picked a couple of options. She asked yesterday if she was signed up for anything else after she returns from the youth group trip that left at 6:30 this morning; I told her no & I think she’ll be happy to have some chill time.

It’s a balancing act, that’s for sure. We’ve only got 5 1/2 weeks till school starts again; 4 1/2 from when she gets back.

In NJ (my home for almost 4 decades) teachers contracts stipulated that they couldn’t be required to return to work until September 1st & that they had to have one work day before students arrive, effectively making September 2nd the earliest that kids could start. Depending on when Labor Day fell, we often didn’t start school until September 8th. But we didn’t get out until the end of June. Here in TN, we usually start on the early side of mid-August, which took some getting used to, but it’s still 180 days in the classroom.

S starts on Sept 8, then off on Sept 9-10 for Rosh Hashana, which we celebrate). Still, an easy first week for him. He is at sleepaway camp till August 22, then we take D to college, and then mother-son bonding with two days at the U.S. Open (tennis), an annual tradition (although we will miss D there this year!)

FYI - Our school year goes so late. D didn’t graduate from HS till June 25 (just a week ago).

Ah, I miss the Jewish holidays (even though we don’t celebrate) as well as a few other ones that I thought were standard across the country but apparently aren’t (i.e. Columbus Day.) Once school starts on August 11th, the kids have off Labor Day Monday, 2 days in October then Thanksgiving break. The fall semester always seems so loooooong!

Wow- drivers ed? My D’13 is only 14 years old so we have two more years before we cross that bridge. I do not look forward to it.

My DD is having a more relaxing summer. Her attempts to find a babysitting position did not work out. She is joining another family for a two week out of state vacation and we have a two week vacation in Canada. Other than that, she is home. We were thinking about a one week writing camp, but were unable to come up with the funds for that.

School doesn’t start until after labor day here, so we have just started vacation this week.

Do your schools assign summer reading? We have always had summer reading (the school is 5 to 12), with tests/essay assignments the first week of school . This year, they have added a summer writing assignment to accompany the reading.
