Kelowna: I hope you didn’t take my surprise at 7 AP’s to be a negative about your son’s schedule. Everyone has to work within the parameters of their schools “norm” and I know your son is a real go getter within a super competitive school.

I mentioned to D last night about the 7 APs and she was shocked. She said there is one junior taking 6 APs this year but that’s not the norm & she’s pretty sure he had to get some type of administrative approval.

good luck to those taking the ACM’s today For my knowledge, do the kids get scores back? How long after the test? Or only if they do well enough to move on?

Why is your guidance counselor so pushy? To get all A’s and 5’s in 7 AP’s (could it be 9 exams?) is almost beyond possible for a HS junior if the student also has loaded EC’s.

RobD - I absolutely understand and know that each kid is in a totally different water, not to mention the fact that they are totally different. I am honest to the bone on this forum (in real life as well ). I do not like AP system. Period. I am not a pushy mom, I have a kid that is extremely driven who just happens to attend a very competitive school with some very driven kids as well. I do not come here to brag, I am here to share. I do not control his life, his school schedule. I trust him. I try to be helpful to him. He has joked many times about my addiction to CC, but many times as well he had to say that the knowledge I gathered here has
helped him to navigate.
OK, I will explain a little more about next year schedule. Some of the classes are AP/IB. You take 6 exams in IB, three of them HAVE to be HL, so you HAVE to take two years of instruction . For the SL you take one year of instruction and you can take two of the exams as a junior. S wants to take 4 HL and 2SL. So it automatically gives him as a default 6 AP/IB classes for next year. But…here is a catch …there is no math class for him at the school next year, will be taking it outside, so it frees him one period. What is he chosing for this empty spot? AP science ;)
I am sure it is still going to change, but the preeliminary schedule for next year looks like this:
AP English Literature (AP exam)
IB Physics (no AP exam)
AP/IB Chemistry (AP Exam)
Either TV Production or IB Film (no AP test)
AP/IB Spanish (IB exam and possibly AP test)
AP/IB Micro/Macro Economics (2 AP exams, IB exam)
AP Euro (AP exam)
Possibly art or free first semester/TOK second semester.

Looks like possibly 5-6 AP exams and two IB exams for sure.
This year he will probably sit for 5 AP exams - he is taking 4 AP classes and one college class. He took one AP class as a freshman and one that was not designated as an AP but the teacher got them ready for an AP test, so he took 2 AP tests as a freshman.
Have to run now, see you all later.
Please feel free to comment, but do not judge ;)

Not judging! And my older D used to bust my chops about my CC time, but I’ve found out a lot of good intel that she appreciated later.

I find the difference for IB from school to school so interesting. And just scheduling in general. Our HS only has 7 academic periods (8 total including lunch) so that’s not even possible here. What we were told at our meeting was that they could only take 2 IB exams junior year no matter what. Wonder if that’s just our school?

Heard that about 30 kids from 9th-12th grade took the ACM this morning. D said it was awful and that she thought everyone was doing all the problems except for her. Turns out that among her group they all only finished about 10 problems out of 25. So she felt a little better after that. Have I ever mentioned she’s my English loving kid ;)?

I understand that most of the classes are IB/AP mix in your S’s school. I have not had much exposure to AP Sciences. Is one year of IB equivalent to AP for chemistry? I know that IB CHEM is a two year course if pursuing HL. So reading your post I am thinking that AP chem covers much less than IB Chem HL. Am I correct?

Also, what physics does your S take this year? (sorry if you had mentioned this before…)

My S would be taking AP Chem this year and may be start with Physics as well. So just trying to gather information.

I have heard of many schools where kids would typically take 14 to 16 AP classes by the time they finish high school. It is nice that some schools give this kind of opportunities for kids who are ready to challenge themselves.

Enjoy your S’s wonderful journey through junior year.

RobD, the school where I work doesn’t let any juniors take any IB exams. Im my school, we don’t have AP courses offered - we have just IB. In my S’s school, There are no IB and they have restrictions on AP courses available for 10 th and 11th graders. And no freshmen takes any AP courses.(may be under special circumstances they let some one take it), for example my S takes AP Calculus BC and AP STAT as a sophomore but it is a bit unusual for the school and he had the permission from math chair to do this.

I am getting addicted to CC too…and learning a lot here every day.

S is not back from school yet, So didn’t know how he did on AMC yet.

IB Chem HL is much harder than AP Chem. In our IB program here, students will take IB tests at their senior year near graduation. When D1 was in HS, she did a few AP classes (may be 6 AP classes) and the rest IB classes. However, she was allowed to sit in any AP tests where she saw fit (no scheduling conflicts). So she ended up taking total 16 AP tests when she graduated from her HS, though 10 of them she never officially took AP classes.

The formal AMC result will take couple of weeks to be graded. However, students usually compare their answers with each other after the test and figure out their scores pretty accurately, as long as they did not miss-bubble the answer sheet. D2 did AMC10A today and was reasonably happy with her performance.

BerneseMtn, today is A-day. Feb, 23rd is B-day. Your D took AMC10A today. If her school decides to sign up on B-day (which is not too late yet). She may take AMC 10B or 12B on that day. My D2’school signed up on AMC10A, AMC12A and AMC12B. Her teacher registered 20 copies of 12B and will only allow selected students to take them. The teacher will let 5-6 9th graders to take 12B.

AMC A was today, AMC B is in two weeks. Kids can take both and strong math kids generally do take advantage of that . S thinks he got 136.5 on AMC 10 A (today). He has asked me to find out weather he should take AMC 10 B or AMC 12 B. It has become a little tricky with the introduction of junior USAMO.
I really do not know the difference between AP and IB Chemistry. AP Chemistry at our school is known to be a killer, difficult and lots of work. The kids actually take a lab at our state flagship for this course. But the teacher is considered to be one of the best the school has.

RobD - the differences between IB schools are the reason my kid is commuting one hour each way! His school is the oldest IB school in the state and offers the most IB courses.
I do have a school profile in my possession now (yay!!!), but am too tired to count the courses they offer. Will do it next time. (see, I go on CC even if VERY tired )

Well, Dallas is now experiencing a record 5th snow day!!! Most years we don’t even have one. And today was not a good day to have ice and snow. S’13 is supposed to be flying to San Antonio this morning for All State Choir. His ride picked him up a few minutes ago and so far, their flight status is on time - but i’m expecting delays and cancellations. S’13 is a little worried because he has to be there by 6pm to audition for a solo. Oh well, he’s just a sophomore, there will be 2 more chances! We’re going down to see the concert on Saturday - fun little getaway for me and H.

Apparently S’13 made it to San Antonio on the only flight that wasn’t cancelled this morning. He texted me to say he made it. I’m sure we won’t hear from him again until we track him down when we arrive on Saturday.

Here in the west side of the Rockies it is actually a mild winter.
We are enjoying our break from constant driveway plowing :)

I have a D’15. Should I start a thread for her?
We are in the midst of choosing freshman year courses and can’t decide between Mandarin and French…

I have a '15 S and we just did his course selection for next year and I wondered when I’d see his CC thread :)

He’ll be taking Spanish III next year and D’13 is already worried some of her friends that didn’t start a language until 9th will be in the same class :)
