In our experience, there are more “hard” questions on the real exam than the one they give in the practice book, but not all of the questions are hard. Many kids leave the exam feeling it was easy - then the scores come out in Dec… ;)

Timing is everything, isn’t it? D14 came down with a horrible fever/sorethroat/headache bug LAST Wednesday and still isn’t better! Took her to the doctor yesterday and we ruled out strep throat but there’s a slight chance she might have mono. No fever today, so fingers crossed that she’s on the mend. Meanwhile, I’m trying to find out if I can get her registered for the Saturday SAT at another high school but of course, no one is answering the phone! I spoke to her college counselor and she said that she can also write a letter after test day reciting the circumstances and it is possible to use a future SAT score for NMF qualification. I don’t have all the details but she can’t talk and she’s sleeping most of the day so I’m hoping we have a viable option. She’s been putting time into studying for it since summer and a PSAT prep class so mentally she’s ready. She did pretty well last year so I think she has a shot at qualifying. It’s just so tough when kids come to school sick because they don’t want to miss class but in effect, spread it to their friends. I’m trying to be a mom first and keep her home if there’s a fever. Just wish others would do the same! Sorry for the rant…timing is everything!

I think my S studied a bit last weekend–he had to go out of town for an audition and he brought his book with him. We’ll see. I am way too lazy to be a tiger mom. Especially with this kid–he’d fight me every step of the way. As a sophomore he wasn’t too far off our state cutoff, so NMF is a possibility.

He has a concert tonight, so this is it pretty much. Should be a good concert, anyway :)

DS did a few questions over the weekend and will look at some math tonight (he says). Hopeful that the teachers won’t lay down too much homework on the eve of the PSAT. Good luck to everyone tomorrow!

D had mono two years ago. She got the flu shot 3 weeks ago and has been sick ever since. She got too sick to go to school on Friday so we took her to the Doc and her blood work came back positive for Mono (and at higher levels than last time). So everyone remember, you can get Mono twice!

Although her previous pre-PSAT scores weren’t anywhere near Jersey’s cutoff, I still wanted her to take them tomorrow. I’ll have to speak with her counselor about Saturday as a possibility.

PDX & sydsim - so sorry to hear about illnesses! My DS has also had mono this school year. Seems to be going around! Hope they get to feeling better - and testing works out.

Sorry to hear about the illnesses! Best wishes and clear thinking to all who are testing today! My guy did another couple of practice sections last night. He’s definitely no threat to NM contenders… We’ll just see if he does better on the PSAT or ACT later this month.

Fortunately, his goals aren’t tippy top colleges nor math dependent fields. He’ll do just fine at the colleges he is considering and in life in his niche. ;)

Three sharpened pencils, fresh batteries in the calculator and an apple for a snack . . . he’s off to the PSAT :)

Sent DD off to PSAT this morning. I expect her to do better this year than last if only because now she’s had Geometry which her school does in 10th grade! She’s done a (very) little studying for the SAT which hopefully will help her with the PSAT. No time to do any studying last night - too much other work to get done along with a rehearsal for a Halloween haunted event.

She’s not a happy camper today. Three hours of PSAT testing followed by their first DBQ in APUSH and then Physics class! And part of last night/early this morning was spent researching how to write a DBQ because the teacher hasn’t taught that! I googled it and found some great ideas here on CC on what to include and how to organized it but she also had to find another website on how to format it. Can’t imagine that any of the Juniors will be fresh enough to do their best on the DBQ after the PSAT when they have no idea what they’re supposed to be doing!

This is dds 3rd time taking it (freshman and sophmore years) but the school system is paying for all juniors to take it so we might as well do it again. She has difficulty finishing but got okay scores last time. We are planning to do SAT and ACT this spring.

L.

S14 is taking his PSAT today. He’s away at school so I sent a text message. I’m looking forward to seeing him at Thanksgiving break.

Son is taking the PSAT this morning. I cheered him on this morning, but I dont have high hopes. I do think it will be good practice for him. He is taking the SAT for the first time in December.

What is a DBQ…S1 in APUSH…I have no idea what this refers to ???

Without Googling it, I think a DBQ is a document based question. I have heard my high schoolers talk about DBQs and FRQs. These seem to be the essay question parts of the test.

Yes - it’s a Document Based Question. That’s about all I know - an essay to be written in their long period (80 minutes). It’s all new to me also (and to her!). DS11/15 only took AP Calc so we didn’t have to deal with any essays for him!

thanks for the lingo update…

Had a funny conversation between S1 and spouse after spouse overhear discussion regarding Honors Math homework…“Doesn’t Sine just mean when you put your name down, Cosine just when you and your honey both sign together,Tan is goin to the beach, and CoTan is when you go together on spring break” …lol by the whole family.

So sorry to hear about your sick kid, sydsim. It just makes junior year that more stressful with illnesses hanging over head. D14 wen to school and is probably finishing up the PSAT as we speak. Fortunately they get out early so I’ll pick her up and she crawl back under the covers if necessary. Got the evil eye from her this morning but I was reminded that her PSAT prep instructor reminded them “Not to be happy” when taking the test–staying in attack mode–so she certainly has that part down pat! Good luck to all! Just think, they will never have to take THIS test again!

Lol. A DBQ is a Data Based Question. It’s one of the three types of AP essays- students read primary source documents and utilize them to write an essay on a given topic. They’re not as bad as comparative essays.

pdx and syd - Sorry to hear about the sick kiddos. The timing always seems to be horrible. D took her PSAT today and she said the math was easy but the reading questions were a killer. She said she left 7 questions unanswered in one section!

So much for the prep classes at school and the self study at home. I guess we will wait for the test scores and go from there.
