Parents of the HS Class of 2014

AvonHSDad … yep! We had Ferrell Armstrong.

And our student tour guide was Emma Phillips.

Thanks for the info!

Winds have been steadily picking up all night… I guess we are in Sandy’s crosshairs after all…:frowning: The grocery store was a mad house yesterday and all we needed to grab were some items to make hot fudge sundaes for dessert. That ended up being a long wait in line with melting ice cream! The kids here in the state will have Monday and Tuesday off. Its so funny b/c school cancelations were only for snow in the past. Who would have ever thought that school would be closed in October? Everyone keep safe out there…

School is closed here in PA too. We had a day off last year for Irene/Lee too. When roads flood or limbs are down, kids can’t get to school. It does seem strange though. I had hoped for no snow days because we have to make them all up over other days we had scheduled to have off. I prefer days off in the winter or spring.

Such is life.

We’re just starting to get stronger winds here. So far we have power. Who knows how long it will last. We have a generator and gas, so we’re pretty set. We started chilling last night by playing board games - Countdown - an old NASA space game we love to play on occasion - anyone else remember it or have it?

No, but a favorite of ours is Quiddler! Lots of fun arguments ensue… we tend to be such a competitive bunch. I am trying to get the last bit of laundry/vacuuming and dishes done just in case the power goes out. Not to mention I am sick with a chest cold/wheezing/ a persistant headache and some light headedness… No rest for the weary… :(

Quiddler is fun! We love to take it on vacations with us, esp if we’re camping. We’ve been so used to playing it with 5 or 6 players that is seems a bit less fun with just 3 though. Lately we’ve been used to playing games with 4 - games that take 4 players (like Rook and Mah Jongg). We’re having to adjust to 3 since fall when middle son left for college. Mexican Train dominoes still works… and we play Wide World (another oldie passed down through the generations in my family - it’s an airplane travel game).

Apples to Apples is no longer fun… with three.

Quick question that I have been meaning to ask… if dd14 wants to apply to a school with rolling admissions, next summer. Can she apply early one another school later on in the fall? Or does the rolling admissions app automatically preclude her from applying early? To say Harvard, Stanford, Wesleyan et al…

NewHavenCTMom – there’s early decision and early action – early decision means if you get accepted, you’re saying you will attend; early action just means you find out sooner, but you do not have to attend if admitted. Yale has Single Choice Early Action: [Frequently Asked Questions - Single-Choice Early Action | Yale College Admissions](<a href=“Single-Choice Early Action | Yale College Undergraduate Admissions”>Single-Choice Early Action | Yale College Undergraduate Admissions). If she applies Early Decision at one school, she can still apply rolling or early action to other schools. Just make sure to read each school’s policies about the other admissions programs they allow.

Hope you feel better! The wind’s picking up here.

I have been thinking about you all, stay safe.

Apples to Apples: we sometimes play with a couple of stuffed animals, that play cards at random from their hands. Works better than you might think :)

Early applications: single-choice early action is the most restrictive in terms of where else one can apply – if she wants to do a single-choice EA, she may not apply to any other schools EA, ED or using rolling admissions to apply early.

Otherwise, she can apply to one ED school, plus as many regular EA and rolling admissions schools as she wishes. If accepted to the ED school, she must immediately withdraw her applications from all the other schools.

Mathmom, I’m pretty sure that students applying SCEA have the option of applying to public universities EA.

and

From the Princeton website. ( [Princeton University | Single-Choice Early Action](http://www.princeton.edu/admission/applyingforadmission/single-choice-early-actio/) )

Harvard says something similar.

http://www.admissions.college.harvard.edu/apply/application_process/early.html</a></p>

You’re right, I overstated the restrictions on SCEA. Princeton also allows you to apply early to any school with non-binding rolling admissions (looks like public or private). I didn’t check Harvard’s. Obviously, everyone should carefully check the restrictions on the school(s) they are interested in.

^They say in the beginning no private schools and then they say you can apply to anything :S Strange.

Anyways, it makes sense. Lots of kids that these schools want are probably using their state schools as safeties.

BUMP

So, who has students taking Saturday’s SAT? It will be DD’s first time. Fortunately she has no school on Friday and can fit in a practice test or two. Good luck to everyone’s students! And I hope those of you on the East Coast are safe and have power!

DS won’t take SAT until the spring. No school for the rest of the week due to the storm!! I doubt the SAT will be taking place here on Saturday.

We survived the move, despite the hurricane’s rains and winds. Even got Chinese food for dinner that night. S’14 seems to like the new house. He’ll be able to sleep a little later each morning before heading off to school. Tomorrow is his regional cross country meet, and he’s quite excited.

Hope everyone in Sandy’s path is safe!

Glad you survived the move, momreads! I was thinking about you and wondering if it happened or got put off. I hope the cross country meet goes well!

We’re done with testing until spring. S’14 took the PSAT and ACT. He was blown away by the reading and science sections of the ACT. I warned him that he really needed to do some practice sections to get the timing and style down, esp since the science section isn’t really science like he was thinking, but he assured me he would be fine. There’s nothing like experience to learn I suppose. Hopefully in the spring he’ll be more willing to prep - or - perhaps his PSAT will show the SAT to be his better test. I’m thinking it’ll still be the ACT though, but maybe I’m biased because that was the better test for my older two.

Best wishes to all taking the SAT!

We had hoped to hop down to FL in Feb to check out Palm Beach Atlantic, but Sandy’s days off just erased our Feb vacation days. Kiddo is heading to Jamaica in Jan (taking days off from school) and he shouldn’t miss too much school, so now I’m doubtful that we’ll even get to visit this year. Figures… I don’t want to go over Christmas and miss time with our family (including college kids returning home).

I just saw on the news that over 25,000 in our regional area and 500+ in our county are still without power due to Sandy. I feel for those folks, esp with the current temps. We never lost power and I’m VERY thankful.

Hello all–

Thanks for the info… had issues with our internet d/t the storm. Hope everyone is well…

DS takes SAT on Saturday…not prepping so much lately due to homework & ECs. He did prep for the PSAT, so what little prep he is doing now is mostly for the Writing/Essay portion of the test. Best Scenario…one and done…worst scenario…he establishes a good baseline score for retakes over the next 12 months. fingers crossed for the first…we’ll see.
