We got PSAT and ACT scores both yesterday. My son’s strategy with this first ACT (administered by the high school for free… with a second round administered free in March) was to just see how he did with no prep at all. He did better than his sister did, even on her second round and she did a lot of practice tests. The only scores that he can really improve are the two sections he didn’t finish. I think he will improve his score significantly by the March round, but he did well enough to qualify for merit aid for all of our state schools, so I’m pretty proud :)

^Yay!! Way to go, S of BarnardMom! Merit aid is a wonderful thing.

No PSAT scores yet that I know of for S’14. He’s plugging away with his tutor and studying the big blue book on his own. He’s taking the SAT Jan 26, but I have a feeling we will end up focusing on the ACT.

PSAT scores next week and DD has no time right now to study for SATs - ugh! I was really hoping that after the crazy fall term and all the volunteer/leadership ECs she’s involved in slowed down she’d have a little “extra” time to devote to SAT prep. So far not seeing any slowdown.

This week she was asked on Monday to deliver the homily at the school’s Toy Mass today since none of the seniors involved in NHS wanted to do it! The NHS advisor (her band teacher) got permission from the school president to ask DD to give it. Definitely an honor and she’s fine with speaking in public (10 plus years of theatre does that!) but it was still stressful to be writing it on top of all the other homework this week. She was still revising it when I went to bed last night! And was off to school at 6:30 this morning to help set up. She wants to be a officer in NHS next year so she can go toy shopping with the adviser teacher next year!

I’m off to see the mass this morning. They collect and bless toys for the shop where the needy parents actually get to chose things for their kids for Christmas. Since the monthly food pantry the school runs serves over 300 families a month, the Christmas shop is very needed too. I’ve seen pictures of the piles of toys the kids donate, but I had wanted to see it in person this year, even before I knew of her involvement!

Frustratingly, the PSAT scores go to the hs and they hold them til some dumb mtg the advisors have with the kids in Jan…
Ridiculous because although it’s my kids score, I can’t get it til then…and the mtg is meaningless.

:(

otoh K2 is recently motivated regarding some things that I hope will be an across the board motivation…

the college search with K2 will be different. With K1 it was hyp and similar…
K2s interests differ and while K2 would love K1s school, it is not a match.

Heading into the holidays with household tasks and errands.
Have a great weekend.

Just picked up my 3 daughters PSAT scores. Girls are happy with their results. Call those guidance counselors, or better yet, just show up and ask. I have found it is much more difficult for them to refuse you in person.

Some of my friends got their PSATs already. Unfortunately, they live in NYS and it’s kind of tough to make NMF there. Best of luck to your children!

It’s depressing. There have been kids prepping for the SATs since 7th grade! O_O It’s really exhausting nowadays. Unfortunately, I don’t think the rest of my life will be any better, so might as well get used to it ;)

Hello everyone, my daughter is anxiously waiting for her PSAT scores ! Does anyone here from AZ get their daughter’s or son’s PSAT scores yet ?

In VT our guidance counselor said PSAT scores arrived in the mail today, and will be processed ASAP and then handed out to the students Friday or Monday.

ecouter11, you may not be able to see it now, but this is NOT what the rest of your life will be like!

@2016BarnardMom: Another Michigan mom here…do our state schools really offer merit scholarships? Guaranteed? Even U of M? (I know, I could look this up myself, but easier to just ask!)

DC got her PSAT score yesterday. (State - MA)

233 (99th percentile)

CR 78 (2 wrong, none omitted) (99th percentile)
Math 80 (0 wrong, none omitted) (99th percentile)
Writing 75 (1 wrong, none omitted) (99th percentile)

My son’s school got the results today but will not be giving them out until early next week. Bummer. He would like to know if he improved, because he felt that he did. He’ll just need to be patient.

MImama: Do not know about the Michigan schools, but there are many colleges and universities that award merit money for National Merit status or outstanding SAT/ACT scores. My oldest son was National Merit in VA. He accepted a huge scholarship from Alabama, but got lots of offers from around the country.

jasmineRose: Congrats on the great score.

jasmineRose, congrats on the great score!

Just got a message from DS’s h.s. that the PSAT scores arrived and that they will be handed out “during English class.” Not specific about which day, however. The message ended that we could contact the student’s GC directly, but I don’t want to be THAT parent. Will have to just wait. Congrats to those with happy scores. We have some real acheivers on this thread :)

I just heard from another mom at our school that her son received the PSAT score today (who, by the way, did very well!). I texted my ds … he won’t receive until English class tomorrow. I’m tempted to call, as well, but like glido, I don’t want to be THAT parent! haha

Congrats to BarnardMom and JasmineRose’s kids!! I’m (not so) patiently waiting until tomorrow. ::Now, what time is that English class?::

Great scores, JasmineRose! Congratulations!

And congratulations to your three girls, muse3sqrd!

2016BarnardMom, way to go to your son…no prep and did well enough for Merit Aid. That must feel so good!

DD’s school has received the scores but will not release them until Winter Break. I suppose if we called or went by for them the GC would release, but in all honesty, I don’t want to put any more stress and anxiety and weightyness (I think I just made up that word!) on this process. My DD is feeling the stress and strain of junior year, her AP classes and ECs.

We’re working hard trying to find the right balance between Test preparation, keeping GPA up, managing ECs and sleep! She is taking ACT on Saturday and has concert on Sunday.

Her school announced that although they want Winter Break to be truly a break with no homework, this does not apply to AP classes. Now I think DD wishes she had registered for fewer AP!! No rest for the weary (and I’m the one weary just by witnessing the work!) Gee whiz.

They aren’t guaranteed like in some states. I should have been more clear that he will qualify to compete for the big scholarships. If he continues with the major he is leaning toward now, the only two schools in the state with that major are Western Michigan and Grand Valley. All the kids I know with his kinds of stats received significant scholarship money from both of those (without need). Michigan and Michigan State don’t give nearly as much although Michigan offered my daughter a pretty good package (need based, school grant). She was just in love with Barnard and NYC and there was a very slight price difference. But I know kids at WMU, EMU and GVSU with much lower stats than my son’s who got significant merit aid. Again, not guaranteed, just likely.

JasmineRose ! Congrats on excellent scores.

Congrats, jasminerose–you must be one proud mama! What a load off your mind to know that the score is so high and that it will be competitive for scholarships.

Is it my imagination or is this one tough curve?

Well, ds received score today after all. Not as good as I had hoped for - 9 points below our state’s last year cutoff. At least I know he has a strong ACT score to go with! :)
