Parents of the HS Class of 2014

I would honestly follow ones that your student is considering. Here are my other picks, in no particular order, for various reasons:

@deanflagel , Andrew Flagel: I started following him when he was with admissions at GMU because I’m a local girl and he loves basketball and was just all around funny. He’s since moved on to Brandeis. If you don’t like sports he’ll probably drive you nuts, but he’s got a great perspective on standardized testing, and I find him entertaining.

@wpjenna, Jenna Johnson: Campus Overload blogger and Washington Post higher ed reporter.

@commonapp, The Common App, there are some changes coming out for our kids admissions cycle so I figured I’d follow along.

@nytimescollege, NYT The Choice, Great blog by Jacques Steinberg on all aspects of the admissions process.

@UVaDeanJ, DeanJ and CavDog keep applicants up to date on the admissions process in conjunction with her blog “Notes from Peabody”. (one of my personal favs  )

I feel kind of bad not really plugging any of the newer ones I’m following for S3, but I don’t really have a feel for them yet, so as I said just check out the schools they are interested in. If they drive you nuts, it’s just a click to unfollow. :)

What a great idea, blueiguana! Off to check out who’s on Twitter…

Okay, on a non-admissions note, Jimmy Fallon is really funny, but maybe it’s just me. For the science geeks (like me!) I’ve been following the Mars Curiosity Rover, @MarsCuriosity. How awesome is that?! He tweets links with pictures from Mars…ahhmazing. I follow a few to fill my political junkie side, but I won’t make recommendations because that’s an extremely personal choice. News/opinion alone won’t make my list for this. You have to make me laugh.

Oh my gosh, I just get used to Facebook and my kids turn to Google+ and Instagram. Now Twitter! The learning curve is exponential. But I’m intrigued.

Congratulations to Vandyeyes and dowagercountess on EAGLE…that’s a huge accomplishment. I’m sure you are very proud.

Welcome to worrytoomuch … Reed is such a beautiful campus in such a great town. I hope it’s a great visit for everyone.

Thank you all for the advice about summer. Doing what DD is very involved with a local music non-profit that provides lessons and instruments to low SES children. She will likely continue to help with their summer music camps. And the science and physics internships/apprenticeships she is applying for are exactly what she would enjoy, just for looooonnnnngggeeerr than she would enjoy! (Though there are stipends!)

We’ll see if she is offered a placement and then she can decide. Maybe it’s moot. I just don’t want to get to the end of this high school ride, face-palm and mutter “we shoulda …” That’s why I’m here, learning from those of you have been here and done this!

Bahamas … I wanna go. I would change my CC name to BahamaMama … oh yeah.

Blue–thanks for the Twitter reminder. I had set up a feed a few months ago so that it would open with all the other windows each morning but I must have logged out and completely forgot about it. It seems to have become cluttered with random ads and retweets so need to have my children show me how to clean it up. In the meantime, I added a couple of your follows. I assume Jacques Steinberg will continue tweeting but under a different ‘handle’.

I also follow colleges on Facebook but only by stopping in on their page.

Ok … I’ve loaded up on Twitter people to follow. I remember last summer as AP results were coming out, someone suggested Trevor Packer ‏ @AP_Trevor. He had all sorts of stats on AP scores. It didn’t matter last year, as DS didn’t take any AP classes his sophomore year, but I’ll be watching for him to do the same this summer!

I was talking to a senior parent at work today. Apparently our state has installed new software this year for reporting grades. It is ALL screwed up and they are not able to get 7th semester grades sent to colleges or get class rank or correct GPA!! I know it is for our school, but may be for MANY schools in the state! YUCK!!! So glad I don’t have a senior this year!! She was concerned about a scholarship that was due by 2/1 and needed updated GPA after the last semester. I guess the counselor will send a hand computed GPA with a letter.

Son of a gun! Thanks for the update. Until reading this and thinking, I’m missing something, I had no idea he was leaving the blog/NYT, with Tanya Abrams taking over (who started with him a year ago). It was in a 1/10 post that flew past me. I took a twitter hiatus while S2 was home for break, only checking periodically (not reading back), so never saw it. Thanks for the catch, and I apologize for putting out bad intel. :o CT, you also bring up a very good point, I hope he will be blogging and tweeting from another name soon.

I’m not much of a Twitterer (Twit?) but I’ll admit I spend way too much time on facebook. I’m a fan of College Admission: From Application to Acceptance. The book is really well-thought out and the authors have a terrific blog that you can subscribe to updates via facebook. Here’s the link: [Seniors: Beware of financial aid scams | College Admission](<a href=“College Admission”>Seniors: Beware of financial aid scams | College Admission)

Love The Choice – I’m really enjoying reading the seniors blogs as they go through the admissions process.

Last day of finals for my girl–hurrah! Hard to believe they are half-way through junior year! We’re going to do a little spring break college-tour planning this weekend and hopefully catch the movie Silver Linings.

BI–I still haven’t gotten the hang of twitter as my feed is too cluttered. I have had the Choice blog on my Favorites bar and just read the actual blog periodically. Had been reading it for a couple of years before I started by CC addiction! Am not enjoying this years’ applicants as much, but I think the problem is that I am now too immersed in the subject!

Shout out to all the '14s sitting for the SAT tomorrow am! Knock 'em dead!

^Amen and Hallelujah!

It’s SAT “eve”, and my S’14 is home on a Friday night for the first time in his very social high school life. SAT tutor called me en route to a lunch meeting today and said “I noticed he’s having trouble focusing – what meds is he on?” NONE. Now dreading the upcoming SAT marathon for S, but I don’t want to rush to get a prescription on the eve of without any research.

Ugh. Tomorrow will be a morning that will only be made tolerable by a cleaning frenzy on my part. Not kidding – we all manage stress in different ways. I just feel bad he’ll be there, not able to focus, and it will go on and on and on…

This too shall pass. Good luck to all.

Deep breaths Classof2015. Maybe he can’t focus because he’s just had finals? Junior year is tough and SAT/ACT testing certainly can feel like a pile on. I’m sure he’ll be fine.

Now, can I give you my address? My house really needs a good cleaning:)

I am so there! Rubber gloves and scrubbies. So glad to be needed. :)

Classof2015, you are my role model. I wish I can use cleaning as a stress reducer!
DS14 will be taking SAT tomorrow. I think I will just FOCUS on my DD17 until SAT is over.

If this is the first SAT for these HS Jrs, try to look at this as the first test that just has to be taken in order to get past the first test stress. I have no idea if there is anything to that theory, but I know my son felt more comfortable with the PSAT after his Oct SAT and then more so with the Dec SAT.

And, I think I mentioned this upthread but am too lazy to look for my old posts…the Jan sitting is one where you can order QAS. Here is the link:
[SAT Scores - Student Answer Verification Services](<a href=“The SAT – SAT Suite | College Board”>The SAT – SAT Suite | College Board)

You can still order it and there doesn’t appear to be any advantage to ordering at registration. Results will not arrive prior to March exam (or, don’t count on it) but the info will be helpful if taking a May or June SAT.

Agree with Agent99 that Jr year is a lot and the timing of this exam date is lousy for schools that just finished mid-term exams. Good luck to all tomorrow!

Good luck to all SAT’ers tomorrow!! :)

Best of luck to all sitting for the SAT tomorrow!!

Sending positive vibes to all of our kids taking the SAT this morning. Calming thoughts to moms & dads.
We’ve got some awesome kids here, they’ll do great.

For the other Eagle Scout parents… I had always heard that there are scholarships out there for Eagles. Has anybody looked into that yet?

I had no idea about QAS, let alone it only being available during certain seatings. Of course my DD is taking the SAT in March. Guess I’ll have to keep that in mind, along with a million other things, for a retest in October of senior year.
