Parents of the HS Class of 2014

We have not heard a peep from our GC. They are supposed to post quarterly newsletter on the website which are usually old recycled newsletters from prior year. However, I have not seen one posted for months. I have long ago given up on them and only use them for signatures and transcript. Whenever I have real questions, I think of my fellow parents here. In a way, you helpful and wonderful people are my GC.

fogfog: similar policy here regarding Naviance and access to scattergrams. The Scattergram function is only accessible when physically logged in at the school. Unfortunately, it seems that these graphs represent potentially very meaningful and helpful aspects for decisions for the students (and parents). The GC understands this and does readily encourage parents to come in a some point to take a look at the graphs; still a bit of a hassle to actually execute with life on the treadmill, etc. The school has a small graduating class (about a hundred) so I ā€œgetā€ the potential for loss of anonymity if someone wants to spend some time trying to ā€œfigure it outā€.

^ Vandy–thats their point…
though MANY schools allow access…and the grad classes here are close to 200

If the pop for apps to a certain school is low–there is a ā€œtoo little dataā€ feature that can block it.

I think it is because it shows where the kids get in and where they don’t—
the school profile lists ā€œacceptedā€ and ā€œattendingā€ā€¦not applied/accepted.
It would be easier to see-- and I think blocking easy access is about marketing…

kwim

I would be very frustrated if I could only access Naviance data from the GC’s office.

Our school level data provides five years of application and enrollment history, but only the # applied, accepted, enrolled. The scattergrams contain that same five years of data but do not identify a data point as enrolled, simply accepted, rejected, waitlist accepted or denied, if known. I wish the data points were identified as EA/ED vs RD, but that info is only captured as averages.

After reading of other schools’ approaches, I should not complain and be thrilled with our access. Scattergram data is sometimes blocked if there aren’t enough data points. And, yes, someone with lots of time on her hands could follow the changes to the five years of rolling data and ID some of the applicants, but that just seems like a lot of work!

Quick question: Does anyone know when/how SAT scores are posted on 2/14? D stated she was going to stay up until 12:01 on 2/14 to check scores. She’s rather stressed about it… I doubt they’re posted at the stroke of midnight and besides whose midnight is that? EDT? PDT? Obviously, first (and only) time around for us with the whole college thing. Thanks for any words of wisdom. I’m planning to have extra chocolate on hand for her for either a better than expected score (celebratory sweet) or lower than hoped for score (chocolate therapy always does the trick).

They are available after 8 a.m. eastern.

They were not posted at midnight EST for the exams this fall, but I was able to access at the regular wake-up time of 6:30. Chocolate covers all events!

Also, remember to check seven days after the 14th for the detailed score report. If you have not ordered the QAS, you can still order if after seeing her score…perhaps even anytime during the next few months, but it will be more useful the sooner she receives it.

We can order the QAS AFTER seeing the SAT score? If I knew that I would have waited until then.

In the past SAT scores are posted at 5am est. Yes, I’ll admit to twice being awake for scores (once never getting to sleep). I know, nutjob whackaloon status. I have not with this kiddo, however I can’t promise I’ll be able to resist the urge with later tests where he’s more prepared and there’s more on the line. I am a terrible insomniac if that gives me any grace. :o S2 got up at 5:20. One set of scores I resisted waking him up and wrote them on his bathroom mirror in dry erase marker. The second time I couldn’t resist and jumped on his bed waiving the printed out score. He just kind of mumbled ā€œyea me…sleepā€.

Yes, you can order QAS after and report will take 3-4 weeks to arrive. If ordered in advance, report takes 6-8 weeks to arrive. I think we were caught up in the Sandy storm delays, as my son’s Oct QAS arrived the night before the Dec SAT, so one day less than eight weeks. Point being, you may not see report earlier simply by ordering in advance.

Thanks for the words of wisdom and info on test results. I will let D check her scores on Thursday morning and then will know within about one tenth of a second after looking what she thought of them. Could go either way. D didn’t study for the test because she had just finished a very stressful finals week. Fortunately, her AP Lang final had many of the words that were on the SAT test.

I haven’t been impressed with our guidance counselors and this is our first time going through this. Lucky I have College Confidential. His GC sat down to talk about scheduling and never mentioned anything about college but noted ā€œpossible val. candidateā€. How would she even begin to form a list for him?

But…
I have found a couple other school districts near by that have wonderful webistes for college admissions. One lists all scholarships available by month and another has guest access to Naviance. Both have grade level power point presentations and standardized testing information.

Our naviance doesn’t have scatterplots at all. They all say they don’t have sufficient info or are blocked due to small amounts of data.

Indeed, chocolate covers all the bases!

Good luck to all of ā€˜our’ kids getting scores this week. Letting them get their scores in the way that suits them the best is what’s important (mine obviously didn’t care).

I think all of my kids would kill me if I woke them at 5am to tell them scores (no matter how good!) Then again, I’m unlikely to be up at 5am either ;-)

We do not have Naviance, but I have seen the scattergrams on several different websites. I just googled again and remember that I really liked the one on parchment . com. There were also graphs on collegedata and cappex.

There are general scattergrams available on the web, but what’s useful about Naviance is that it is specific to your school. That’s much more useful.

Hello all

How is everyone making out with all the snow that is piled up?

Our GC dept doesn’t win any points here… report card night was this past Thursday(the 7th) and they gave all junior parents information on the CB online SAT test prep. Its free for one year. But what bugs me is that they give it 20 days before the *oddamn test! Seriously? They have had this since last year as the class of 2013 used it a year ago. Talk about a little too late huh? And they wonder why most of the kids in the district don’t take this whole thing seriously. Complacency/ignorance at home and at school… its breeding a ā€œDo you want paper or plasticā€ kind of generation.

Thank God DD has been using the CB online SAT prep since last April, that I paid for and she has a bunch of other items in her arsenal to keep her knee deep in SAT prep, plus the added expense of a private SAT tutor. Am I wrong? or should this info have been given to the juniors way back in the late fall/early winter at the earliest?

We have had NO chats/meetings whatsoever about senior year classes OR college admissions. Sad, sad state of affairs at her school.

What are scattergrams? The school system is supposed to be rolling Naviance out this year for 7-11 graders and would like to know what scattergrams are and why they matter… also seeing that her class will be the first graduating class to use Naviance will any of this stuff matter? I know several kids who have matriculated to Yale in the past few cycles, not sure about any other schools. Which is very frustrating. They don’t discuss or celebrate college acceptances other than the state schools… There are some schools in the district that actually post college acceptance letters on the GC’s bulletin boards.

Oh one last thing, the SAT results are available at 5am EST. How do I know? Because I was up for the results from the Dec 1st test. I actually didn’t log in til 5:30 am or so… yes, I am ONE of THOSE mothers… sorry, I just can’t help myself. And no, I didn’t tell DD. I told her to check her scores at 6:30a when she woke that morning to log in to CB and check her scores…

^ FREE test prep…THAT should be something ALL GC’s should be telling these kids–way back in August…

sigh…
