Parents of the HS Class of 2014

go2mom … How funny about the different timings of each state’s mock trial! Our regionals were at the beginning of this month - our state meet is the first week of March! Our school is sending two teams to state this year - both went 1 & 2 at our regionals, and both were undefeated. (DD is captain of one of them.)

Good luck to her!! I absolutely ADORE watching the teams compete in mock trial - LOVE IT! And unlike debate (which has crazy parent judges up the yahoo - some who have NO IDEA on how to judge) mock trial is judged by, well, JUDGES! (Or attorneys! LOL)

@ Creekland … my sister-in-law went to John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas and loved it. It is a very small, Christian school with a strong bio program. And US World Report as the #1 Christian college in the south. Also, JBU was ranked as No. 1 “Best Value” in the U.S. News and World Report 2013 Best Colleges Edition among its peers in the South. Overall, JBU was ranked as the No. 2 Best College among the 107 regional colleges in the South. This was the fourth consecutive time JBU was ranked as a top two college and the ninth consecutive year JBU was in the top 10.

When you mentioned that your son was looking for a Christian School in the South for Bio/Botany … this came to mind. It may be too small, or not a good fit for other reasons, but I thought I’d throw it out there.

Y’all (my nod to southern-ness) throwing out schools each other has heard of. . . On my d’s list of late? South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City. It’s affordable. It’s 80% male. Only down side . . . The long drive across South Dakota.

fogfog – love that you met a new friend thru CC! I did too, another mom of a student attending the school my D1 was accepted to. She lived 5 minutes from me, and was so helpful in learning the ropes of this unique college…a CTCL school

KaMaMom – was thinking we might have overlap with our visits, we’ll be visiting Northeast schools last week in March

lindz - we do! That’s the week of our Spring Break as well. As it stands right now, I think we’ll be at Penn on the 26th and Brown the 27th. Do you have yours mapped out yet?

@ ordinarylives … your d should check out Colorado School of Mines. Fantastic school, gorgeous location, Golden is a super cute town, it has roughly the same male/female ratio as SDSM so there’s aid for bright young women interested in engineering … overlaps with Univ of Texas, MIT, Univ of Denver, Tx A&M. Our family travelled to CO last summer and spent some time in Golden touring the campus (and a couple of breweries) and enjoying a family reunion! Just a thought :)

KaMaMom–we’ll be at Penn on the 26th. We’re doing the 10 am tour! Perhaps our lawyers-in-training will meet! I was watching last week’s episode of The Good Wife and they had a “mock trial” among the firm’s lawyers. It was pretty entertaining. I love the combination of strong critical thinking skills and acting skills. It’s amazing what the students can accomplish!

Ordinarylives - 80% male? DD is at an all-girl school. She would love that kind of male/female ratio!

PortlandiaParent, did you get the impression that engineering is all they have at CSOMines? Any applied physics?

KaMaMom and go2mom – how funny, we’ll also be at Penn on the 26th, for the 1:00 tour and 2:30 info session…although we arrive at PHL at noon, so making the tour is a little iffy. Fortunately my son has a friend attending Penn so he can explore more casually, and will stay with his friend on campus overnight, is trying to sit in on a class as well.

We’re then either driving (or taking the Megabus-can’t decide) to NY,then on to Boston, (also bus or car rental) and ending up in Providence on the 30th. a lot of moving parts to this trip, still finalizing details. isn’t it headache worthy? it’s one thing planning a vacation, but all the extra factors, ie. should we bother driving to see other schools on the way, is he even interested in that school, are we being too ambitious,or is it just me who drives myself crazy planning this? single mom here, so sometimes just feels like a lot to do alone…

Portlandia Parent - thanks for the suggestion! It sounds like a school worthy of his consideration. It may just depend if Arkansas is far enough south for him. I think he wants to be in the Everglades if he had his preference - or Hawaii. However, mean ole mom is making him apply to more than just a couple of schools, so this could be one that ends up as a nice compromise if he doesn’t get his first choice in location due to no schools being there or finances or whatever.

lindz126–I hear you! It took me a good day to make all the arrangements, figure out how long it will take to get from point A to point B in time for the tours. I made the error of relying too heavily on public transportation (planes, trains and automobiles) during our midwest tour and it was a nightmare! I’ll feel better at least being in control of the vehicle. When we were in Chicago I made the mistake of using Hotwire to book my hotel. I had asked to be near Evanston since we would be looking at Northwestern. Ended up in Skokie. It was a nightmare trying to get back into the City.

My husband will be doing training in Boston so he’s loaning me the rental car. While we’re in Boston, we’ll take advantage of public transportation.

We may see you at Brown on the 30th! We’re signed up for the 11 am tour.

gotomom & lindz … I believe we’re signed up for the 11:30a info sesson & the 1pm tour @ Penn. But in the email receipt it doesn’t specify what I signed up for and when … just that we’re registered. I dunno!

KaMaMom–looks like we’ll be seeing you at the 11:30 info session…we’re just scheduled to do the tour earlier.

How’s this for crazy coincidence? On the 2016 thread I met a bunch of mom’s whose kids were also going to Rochester. One mom pm’d me quite a bit as her older son went there to help out and give advice. We started chatting on fb and have become quite friendly. Our sons ended up two doors down from each other in their dorm and are now friends! They’re even talking about living together next year. The funny thing is - they know we vaguely know each other, they really don’t know we’ve become friends and really know a lot about each others kids now.

So… you never know who you are talking to here!

Small world, Eyemamom!

Also, what thorough deconstruction of Rochester and RPI! DD has received info from each, but she’s been ignoring them as they are from the “snow” zone. I’ve been curious, so thanks.

That’s a great story eyemamom. I’ve had some nice contact with other parents in the class of 2014 who had kids attend HOBY. It’s nice to connect a face with a screen name…no matter how ridiculous or unpronounceable it is!

go2mom–yep 11 am. Brown tour. no info session since it’s Saturday…

small world don’t ya think?!

yes, lindz126–very small world! We will see you there!

calla1, it looks like the physics department at Co School of Mines has grown considerably in the past 10 years, now enrolling more than 10% of undergraduates.

And it looks like CSM has a 5-yr BS Engineering Physics & MS Applied Physics program:
[CSM Physics Undergraduate Page](Undergraduate - Physics Department)

Wait.

So all three of us (lindz, go2mom & me) have scheduled the 11:30a Penn Info Session on 3/26?

That is a hoot! (As my busha would say!)
