Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Blue, do you mean AP scores? Subject tests are usually used for admission.

Yes, thank you for catching that!! Total brain drain on my part!! Whoa, staying up late with S2 home on spring break to watch Jimmy Fallon certainly isn’t doing anything for my brain power! :o

Aw, it’s sweet that you can do that though (sit up late and watch TV with your S home on spring break).

Yes, this may be the last spring break he’ll want to be home so the time spent just hanging out is really nice. We’re both big Jimmy Fallon fans but since it doesn’t come on until 12:30am I never stay up to watch it unless he’s home. The difference being, I instinctively wake up by 7-7:30am whereas he sleeps until 1pm, lol. On short breaks I don’t mind the lack of schedule. Longer breaks like winter holiday and summer he’s always working full time so there’s not sleeping in.

SAT II Subjects tests are for both Admission and Course Placement. In fact, some students (after admission) still take the test for better course selection/placement.

Blue, mine is coming home but has informed me that he hopes no one actually expects to see him during his break because he’ll be working the entire time. :-/ I’m pretty sure it is the three upper-division CS classes he is taking at once that are keeping him very busy!

^ I hear you. S2’s been in his room all day doing work. Thermodynamics is the thorn in his side this semester. I have a gf whose DD is a Jr and didn’t come home so she could study for the MCATs. I’m glad we won’t be going through the med school or law school gauntlet next year!!

^^^ me too on being glad not to be doing the med school or grad school thing – enough to worry about with our '14s next year!

Mine was home last night from ā€œtourā€ and left again this morning for vacation (home with friend). Personally, I think it was too much for be break. The kid didn’t allow herself any downtime.

We’re leaving Saturday for our Spring break tour! We’ll spend a couple of days at the beach, then travel to see 3 schools in 3 days.

I’m trying to make a schedule since we have to be certain places at certain times and I realized that I still have not received the schedule from one of the schools! The other two, I did through the automated website. But the third one I e-mailed the honors dept. to set up the tour back in January. I hope we’re expected there! :)

What’s everyone else up to for spring break??

enjoy your trip beadymom—which schools will you be visiting?

we leave for Philly in two weeks, then on to NY, then Boston, Providence…have to finalize travel plans. trying to decide whether to drive from Philly or do buses? love to hear any input. I like having the car and the flexibility, but is a pita in cities…

@lindz You may want to consider the train. Very good train service connecting all those cities. Most of the campuses I suspect you are visiting are easily accessible from the Amtrak stations. The problem with driving is the parking. NYC is a pain (I personally avoid driving in NYC like the plague, but that’s just me) and the same with Boston, although less so. Providence is not bad at all (I will actually be there tomorrow for the same reason.) You can PM me for places to stay, etc.

Thanks! We’re going to see Auburn, U of Alabama and Vanderbilt. Auburn was a last minute add just because I couldn’t stand traveling that far and only seeing two schools!

FWIW, we added a ā€œthrow-inā€ school three summers ago to fill an open day when taking DS-11 back east to a college baseball camp. As it turns out, the school was never on any of his original lists and you guessed it, that’s where he ended up attending. You never know how these visits will turn out! :)

Haven’t been to U of A or Auburn but have done Vandy with both DS-11 and DD-14. ITs a great school and both visits were very well done, from the presentations to the tours. Enjoy Nashville.

We are being bad for spring break. No visits to any colleges. We are taking this spring break as our last ā€œfree to travelā€ break with DD (next year will be admitted student visits in April) and the Captain and family are getting their sea legs in shape by cruising for the week in the Caribbean. :D

@beadymom
My D is also considering Vanderbilt. Please let us know how your visit goes.

We are also visiting some colleges this spring break. All in-state. UCs (Berkeley, Davis, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz), USC and Pepperdine. If we have time we might also visit the Claremont colleges (Clarment Mckenna, Pomona, Scripps, Harvey Mudd, etc.)

Spring break cannot come fast enough for my son. Has been battling some sort of flu bug all week. Started in his stomach, but now he’s coughing. He missed a day of school that was sandwiched between two state testing days for English, and the way they set the schedule, he missed three days of BC Calculus, and that’s one of his favorite classes. So last night was spent doing catch up – three, practice AP exams for BC and an essay for AP English. Oh, and he missed the first track meet of the season, too. The kid has not eaten a real meal in days – just has not felt like it. This is the week when you want the snow day.

Beadymom: Enjoy Alabama. It’s a lovely campus. Oldest son will miss the place when he graduates in May.

Momreads - wishing your son a speedy recovery! It’s tough to get them well when they are up late studying and running around to all the ECs.

Momreads, hope your DS feels better soon.
I always thought my family would be visiting colleges during DS’s Junior Spring Break, then he decided to go to his orchestra trip instead. So I am a little disappointed that we cannot visit any schools during his junior year. The bright side is that during the past couple years, we visited several colleges by scheduling in a college visit whenever we visit a new city for vacation.

We were really only going to look at two schools not in our area. Unfortunately, because we are in NJ our spring break has been cancelled. Only off for Good Friday and Easter Monday and both of my co-workers are scheduled out those days so I can’t take off. And DD has been sick a few times this year and missed a few days, so I can’t pull her out of school either. Looks like we’ll have to visit during the summer or at the very beginning of the fall semester. The locals schools we can visit on weekends. Already went to Rowan (NJ). While we both liked it, it’s not ā€œthe oneā€. Hopefully we’ll get in visits to Monmouth University and Richard Stockton in April, after winter guard season is over.

One of the reasons DD did not like Rowan was because it didn’t offer marine science. I know in my heart that after one semester of marine science she’ll be looking to change majors, but I have to give her the opportunity try. Luckily a friend, and senior who is also interested in marine science, is going to visit Coastal Carolina next weekend, so we’ll have a first hand account of her visit.

We are doing a grand Midwest tour for Spring Break in a couple of weeks. Northwestern, Michigan, Miami Ohio, Illinois, Wash U. I can’t remember the exact order but I do know that NU is first, finishing up with Wash U on Friday for an athletic recruiting day. He has friends at both NU and Wash U but unfortunately NU is on Spring Break when we are there. His friend at Wash U plays the same sport he does and I believe they already have plans for the evening we are there ha ha.

It’s tough to squeeze in school visits since DS plays both a fall and spring sport that practices six days a week, plus a club sport in the same seasons! We are just resigned to visiting over the summer. We will make visits to Vanderbilt, Bucknell, Lehigh, Lafayette, RPI, Case Western, and maybe Rice over the next 6-7 months.

The PA schools are in driving distance but the rest will require flights. Luckily we live near a major airport so it’s not hard to find flights and DH has nearly a million frequent flier miles banked so we can use those for trips if the cost for a particular flight is too high. DS also has earned enough for a free ticket but that is already bookmarked for another athletic recruiting visit when he will go by himself.

Our situation is complicated because DS has such specific wants in a school. Ideal on his list would be a mid-sized school (fewer than 10,000 undergraduates) that offers an ABET certified engineering program and where he could play his sport. If that doesn’t pan out then he wants a school with an engineering program and big-time sports. Those constraints rule out LACs obviously. Our list of schools looks very strange!
