CT1417–I hope that you are right. D is taking SAT Chem tomorrow. SAT II Chem covers a wider range of topics than the AP Chem. D opened the prep book two days ago and panicked. Our neighbor, a pharmacist, gave her a couple hours of tutoring yesterday. I guess we will find out tomorrow if it helps.

Good day all! I popped in late last night and read the posts on saying good bye at college drop off and that just make me teary just reading y’all stories. :’(

Regarding SAT subject tests, my S has not taken any yet but I have 3 registered (Math2, Phys, US His) for him to take. I think he wants to only take two but we’ll see what he decides come tomorrow. Good luck all on the SATs. Since I am away on a trip right now I have to remind DH to get some mints for S. Don’t forget those mints! Thanks to previous posters’ tips (sorry forgot who).

Would also like to know about reporting scores for Subject tests taken on the same date. Curious if anyone knows.

I think all scores from the same test date must be reported (I have no earthly idea why this must be so) but I have not double checked that.

My3dr8boyz

I can relate to the highly gifted kid issues - I have one as well - he is graduating in 14 and trying to get him to realize grades are important has been difficult! to say the least.
I have only one and will be an empty nester next year. I will be relived once next year is over! He is not really motivated to look at schools unless I suggest a school and likes every school we looked at so far ( I guess that is a good thing)… I am interested to hear about your search process and where your 13"er is going to school.

Novamom- I just read the SAT official site- you only report the scores you want to report for the subject test. For SAT test you can now select your best score for each section to report.

I agree that score choice (for those schools allowing) lets you pock which specific Subject tests to submit…the college board website: “students can select which scores to colleges by test date for the SAT and by individual test for SAT Subject Tests”

My D did not report one of the three subject tests she took all on the same day. She purposely took 3 because the schools wanted 2 and she wanted to pick the best 2 out of 3. When sending the scores, it listed each one separately.

I will be an empty nester when S14 launches in Sept. '14. I will also finish grad school right before he graduates. I’m going to have so much free time, I might start getting more than 5 hours sleep each night! I also want to learn to quilt.

Thank you all regarding the SAT II scores. That’s a relief! D took 2 last year. She may or may not need a third score.

I can confirm score choice for subject tests. My 2011 grad, S2, took two in May 2010 and one in Nov 2010. He reported one from May and the Nov test.

I rechecked this to make sure nothing had changed before S3 decided what to do. He has a solid WH score from last May. He’s testing in USHistory and Bio tomorrow. Ideally he’ll send the Bio if it’s at least a neutral score for diversity of subjects. He’ll send all three if the USH is strong and will add value. Worst case he can retest in Oct but we’re really trying to close the chapter on testing. Aren’t we all!! :o

Thanks for the reminder on the mints! If you can believe it Wegmans didn’t have a roll of mint lifesavers. What’s up with that? We got a roll of breathsavers and hope the magic is in the mint, not the brand. You never know. Rituals can be very specific. S2 has to put on his Redskins jersey 17min prior to kickoff. Don’t ask me. Years of “research”.

Good luck to all our testers tomorrow!! :)

On impulse I bought a mini tin of altoids for DS to bring with him tomorrow.

DD is taking the SAT IIs tomorrow also - Math 2 and USH. Hopefully both will go well. I found some links on this site to Math study guides and that seemed to help when she was trying to study last night (first time studying!) It’s good to hear you can report only one test. And she can also try them again in June if she feels like it doesn’t go well tomorrow. But I’ll have to register her right after!

I’m hoping once her 2 AP classes are over she’ll have a little more time to study for them if she decides to take them. She’s got Spanish this Tuesday and APUSH next Wednesday. Should be interesting - she’s doing the 20 mile Walk for Hunger on Sunday so hopefully she’ll feel okay to take the test on Tuesday! Then next weekend her school’s band and chorus are going to Six Flags to play at a competition and then go to the park. Seems like bad timing! And the school spring concert is the night before the APUSH exam - she’s asked if she can go in late the day before so she can stay home and study more. Seems reasonable to me.

I’m really looking forward to May 16th! By then, the APs, concert and voice recital will be done and the work load will let up just in time for two proms and auditions for a show this summer! And maybe she will have found a job by then too
Just hoping she can keep her grades up high enough to avoid having to take final exams - worst case is physics grade this term, but it’s still a possibility she can avoid a final. Luckily she aced her first text of the term so it’s helping with the one she just took and didn’t do so well on.

Happy weekend to all - it’s beautiful here and we’re all enjoying being outside!

Can someone save me from reading old posts and remind me of the purpose of the mints for test day? Good thing I am not the one taking the exams as clearly I have no short term memory!

This appears in post #4645 dtd 4/12/13

Thanks blue iguana – I too forgot the exact reference.

So does it have to be a red and white striped round peppermint candy wrapped in plastic or would any “mint”-like thing do? Tic tacs? Altoids? Lifesavers?

We just got a roll of breathsavers. He’s just going to take a few out before each test on the desk. Although, if you just unwrapped the mints prior to the test I guess it doesn’t matter what the packaging was originally. Leave it to a couple of CC moms to angst over the right mints for the SAT!!
But seriously, I don’t want anything that will draw attention to him or cause a disruption. Some proctors are lax, some reasonable, and some very, very strict. Wouldn’t it be just the luck to get scores invalidated over opening a mint?!?

Btw, I have absolutely zippo short term memory either. I’ve developed some search skills on CC because I often want to refer back to something and that’s the only way I’ll ever find it.

good luck to all the test takers tomorrow!

my s has taken two SAT subject tests, chem and bio. He plans to take calc in October, he’ll be taking the SAT 1 again in June. He told me if he reached his goal on the second go around he’ll be done, if not he’ll give the ACT a try in September. I tell him to go for it, as it meets his college hopes. I find this helps him to feel motivated to prepare and own the experience.

Thank you for the mint info! I went out for dinner with friends, leaving son home with husband to study, and forgot to buy mints while I was out. If tomorrow’s exam does not go well mint-free, I will be sure to purchase for June 1st exams. Good luck to all test-takers!

DS14 will take SAT Subject tests in Math II ( 2nd attempt) and Chem tomorrow. He will take AP Chem on Monday at 7:15 am. Good luck to all the test takers!

Loved Fog Fog’s post about emptying the nest. It was so hard to adjust to DS 11’s launch. Still feel his absence most days but it is a “new normal” you adapt to. Counting the days till he comes home for a 2 week visit before heading off to summer research.

Best of luck to all the test takers tomorrow!

D14 signed up for 3 subjects for SATII on Saturday but is only ready for one. Can she only take the one that she is ready for and not the other two? Thanks.
