akmom, congrats on D’s selection to HOBY! S3 will also be going and I think he has been looking forward to it ever since S2 told him how exciting it was for him last year.

S3 has picked up fencing this year and will be trying out for varsity wrestling this month. Based on what I know so far, he may have to drop one sport pretty soon because there is simply not enough time to stay competitive in both, not to mention all the schedule conflicts.

All parents mentally “mark” certain dates on the calendar - when their kids start school, when they turn 13 and 16 and 18, when they graduate from high school. But I had no idea that the date that would change my life profoundly would be the day the youngest child got her drivers license. After 20 years of rushing home from work, either to be with a baby/toddler/preschooler or to drive the child/teen to soccer/gymnastics/dance/cheer/etc., I don’t have to do that. No more kid taxi service. Of course, D loses the car in less than a week when her sister comes home from college for 5 weeks. But next semester, weather permitting, she will be self-sufficient transportation wise. My employer should be grateful, because it means more hours at work.

Hi! I’m jumping in to this thread because the stress of waiting for EA for D12 is making me seriously start thinking about college apps for S14. Crazy huh?

He is considering more selective schools than D so I figure I better start worrying about him now maybe it will take my mind off of D’s EA to UMich (her #1 choice).

I know a lot of you have '14 kids who have already taken the PSAT. Our school doesn’t allow it until Fall of Junior year. I’m wondering about prep. He hasn’t taken the SAT since his 8th grade year and we are considering doing one over the summer. Right now he is planning to do the ACT June and then focus on SAT. Any suggestions?

Congrats to you daughter missypie! I remember how great it was when my DS11 got his license and I only had to drive DD14 around and not try to be in two places at once! Unfortunately, DD14 has a late April birthday and won’t be able to get her license until late next October at the earliest! And while he got his permit in December and had the whole winter to learn to drive in snow and winter conditions, she’ll probably get her license before she experiences any snow driving - unless we have another October snow storm next fall, but I really hope not!

First term report cards were finally sent out Tuesday. So proud of DD14 and what she managed to accomplish! All A’s and A+'s including an A+ in US History (her comment - yeah, don’t know how I managed that!). This is the first year the school has had A+'s for grades 97+. It’s nice for her because she works so hard for her grades and feels there’s a big difference between a high 90 grade and a 93, while both were A’s last year. I know colleges will change them all to 4.0’s, but right now she’s happy. Plus a solid A in English is a good start to her year.

Off to pick her up from school a little early so she can study before the school show tonight since she’s had double rehearsals every day/evening this week for both the school show and the community theatre show that opens next week. Luckily there won’t be a lot of homework during next week’s tech week due to the holiday and school spirit days! I can’t believe Thanksgiving is almost here!

I hope everyone is enjoying time with their family and a peaceful day. I know many of us are blessed by having older siblings home for the holiday! Blessings to all on this wonderful day!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all - especially thankful for all of you on CC who have shared your experiences to help the rest of us navigate this college app. process.

Do any of you have kids in this years class ('12) waiting for ED results in a couple of weeks? The kids on those threads are going crazy waiting. If they think ED is hard to wait for, they will be besides themselves waiting for the big March 31st decision day for RD applications.

Forgot to mention that DD came home yesterday very excited and pleased that she had been selected as her class represntative to the HOBY program this year. She (and we) had no advance info about this and in fact, neither of us were even familiar with the program. As I have posted on the parents forum for HS 2011/College 2015, this should be a nice addition to her resume and college applications in a couple of years. :)

Congratulations to your daughter! HOBY is a good program and there are definite benefits to being an alumna. My currently 2013 daughter participated in HOBY. I had hoped that 2014 son would get to go but apparently at his current school students are nominated by freshman and sophomore teachers. I was pretty irritated to learn this because he has taken very few sophomore classes and no freshman classes since he started high school. He began high school with 18 high school credits from classes he took during middle school. There is still some chance that he may be able to represent the school he will attend for junior and senior year but it is pretty iffy.

I have a dear friend whose daughter was just accepted EA at U of Georgia and Tulane! She applied to several schools EA. I wish I’d told D to do that – when I looked at the EA list, there was no overlap with her target schools, but what a huge relief to be “in” already.

And my nephew has applied ED. Hoping and praying it comes through for him.

AvonHSDad: Thanks for the heads up, but this time, we’ve got high hopes that the '14 son will not be working on his Common App just before New Year’s – something that his older brother (who graduated in '09) did. The younger one is looking at schools that have rolling admissions and merit money. He does not want to sit around all winter and wait for decisions. He has at least three or four schools that he will apply to, because he really liked them when he went on tours with his older brother.

Meanwhile, over a course of five days, he won two area 5K races. With one, he got the family a turkey for Thanksgiving. He plans to run in two more before Christmas. Grades still remain strong. Unfortunately (for him, not us), he cannot get his permit for another six or so months.

I was so enjoying our class of 2011/2015 moments of freshman year without thinking about what this means for kiddo2 :D

The process/ship isn’t on our radar yet–though I suppose it should be…
OTOH
having been through this process once–and knowing that kiddo1 and kiddo2 are so different
and the journey/search/process will be different…
I am feeling kinda zen right now about it all…

Then again, maybe it’s the holiday chocolate talking! ;)

Yay!!! Finally found this thread I have a S (class of 13) and a D (class of 14).

Speaking of permits…by D just passed her permit test yesterday!!
It’s so funny…with our S I could not WAIT for him to drive. (We live about 40 mins from their school and I was in desperate need of a driver to save my sanity.)
But with D, I really don’t feel a sense of urgency for her to drive. S can’t wait for her to drive so he can be free of being the “Benson” of the house…LOL

On permits
Ours has had a permit since last winter–the state requires 365 calendar days–
Kiddo2 is taking drivers ed at school.
License is possible early spring…we will see…

365 days!! I WOULD HAVE LOST MY MIND!!! LOL…
In CA, once you pass your drivers test, you get a provisional license for 1 year.
The driver cannot drive anyone under the age of 18 and must follow strict curfew hours of when the can and cannot be on the road.
Luckily, they are aloud to drive their siblings to and from all school events with a note from the Principal of their school. (Technically, our note came from the head of security campus, but what ever works.)
Now that S is 17, he can drive pretty much about anyone.
And sadly drivers ed is no longer offered in CA schools, so we had both kids take classes and behind the wheel instruction from an outside agency. (And I cannot recommend them ENOUGH!)
