Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Slightly belated Merry Christmas to everyone! (By just a few minutes.) Enjoy your holiday week. :)

Hello all…

Happy New Year! This year has flown by so quickly…

Things are great here on this end for DD14… she applied to and was accepted to a ā€œmock patientā€ program @ Yale School of Medicine… They found that the medical students were in need of adolescents to interview, examine, diagnose, etc… I guess the robots that they were using were not ā€œrealā€ enough".LOL… The mock patients will have to act out different scenarios, emergency situations, present with different symptoms/diagnosis
etc… They will meet once/week and it looks like she will learn alot!

Her PSAT scores went up about 19(190) points… She will begin to study for the June SAT soon(this is a requirement to take dual enrollment classes in her jr year)… We found a PSAT/SAT/MCAT tutor who is willing to tutor her beginning in March. His rate is great but my question is…

How does know if a testing tutor is good? How does one figure that out? We sat in on a workshop of his a few weeks ago and he seems great!

The summer application process is underway and I forgot how tedious it is!

Happy New Year to all! Welcome to 2012!!

**Happy New Year to all!

Only 731 days until our kids’ Common Apps are due.

Only 820 days until Regular Decision Day 2014.** :)

Happy New Year, Everyone!

NHCM,

I wish I knew! How high does your daughter have to score in your state? My son needs about 7 more points if he graduates from a school in our state.

S will use same SAT prep tutor that D used. I asked around among my friends who had kids who were similar to my child academically.

Hi all – just found this group. S1 is class of '14 & S2 '16. Both boys attend large public schools just outside of Boston. S1 wants to go to art school or study art/graphic design at a LAC so he’s focusing on his portfolio right now. Any other future artists out there?

Welcome mom4cw. I have boys in "14 and '16 also. DS '14 will have the better gpa but doesn’t test as well. He is thinking architecture and some top schools require a portfolio. I think the way to go for him would be end up in AP studio art junior or senior year. That requires 4 semesters of prerequisites so we are thinking about that as he plans his junior schedule.

Does anyone have a student that has put together a list of possible colleges? Or some ideas? Will you visit this year? or wait until later in Junior year?

Looks like S1 will go for graphic design or illustration so we’ll be looking at schools at offer either or both majors. His HS doesn’t offer AP Art but they have a great graphic design program that he’s taking part in.

We have the very rudimentary beginnings of a list. DS’14 visited some schools that will be on his list as well with DS’11 but I’m sure he remembers almost nothing. I think we will try to do a couple of visits during April vacation, to get things really ā€œrollingā€ for him.

We are basing a list on trying to offer options that will be similar to a school that S3 has identified as his top choice…never really a good thing this early in the process. Based on everything we know right now the school will probably be a ā€˜high match’ so our job is to find other schools with a similar feel that are match and safety, knowing full well what he thinks he wants now may very well change. We started visiting schools in the spring of Jr. year with his older brother and found this to be a bit late with a busy schedule. We will probably start earlier as he is interested. The Jr year is just very busy, especially the spring with SAT’s, SAT 2’s, AP tests, finals, proms, EC’s, and sports. Stick a spring break and a late spring snowstorm in there and it makes for one crazy semester!!

Starting to compile a rough list of possibilities but no plans to start visiting any time soon.

I have a S14 and D16 as well as S11, now at IU, D13 and a couple younger ones. S14 visited some schools with his older brother and sister over the years. We only visited liberal arts colleges in Ohio, Iowa and Minnesota and public universities in Indiana. He liked Kenyan’s sport complex but I have no idea what direction he will go. Right now we are just trying to get things settled for where he will finish high school (our state’s boarding school for gifted youth or abroad). I wish I knew what he would be interested in studying. He’s a strong student with a 34 ACT but he really has no idea what he wants to do later. Since I have a D13 I am in no hurry to have to worry about college choices with S14! College visits are fun, though. Enjoy!

mom4cw, my 2014 d wants to go on to art school…probably digital animation or illustration. welcome.

My middle DD('17) will be pursuing art, so while I engage in the college process for oldest DD ('14) I will be keeping my middle one in mind.

DD-14 and i have casually visited schools since last year. Just local ones, to get a feel for what she might like. She seems to have an affinity for big rah-rah type schools right now. Has maintained a passion for theater for years now, and it only gets stronger, so now we’re directing the preliminary search that way.

Because her two ECs are so time consuming (marching band and musical), and since her major would require some audition schools, starting the search early has helped a lot. Trust me, I haven’t overwhelmed her with college stuff (an open house here and there). She hasn’t complained yet!

DS is leaning toward schools in urban areas with Division 1 sports. One is an in-state school (but not THE flagship). We may go visit Pitt during Spring Break because DH travels there for work frequently. Actually, his work includes many many college campuses so our family has been exposed to a lot of different schools. But he has never done anything formal so that would be a place to start. He could visit Carnegie Melon (just to compare) but that would be a Reach for him.

Will have to wait for the spring sports schedule to see if we can make a short trip.

True to form, whenever I even mention a school to ordinarykid2, she just smiles and nods as if to say, ā€œThat’s nice, Mom, now leave me alone.ā€ She’s shown no interest whatsoever in the process yet. The only direction she’s given is ā€œnot too big, not too small.ā€ Yes, very helpful.

Only comments from DS1 so far is that he doesn’t want to go to school in California – too far away. (we’re on the East coast)

DD14 and I chat about it occasionally. She’s interested in science (not sure whether chemistry or biology) with the ability to minor in musical theatre. BUT she doesn’t want to stay in eastern Massachusetts, which rules out a lot of possibilities! She came with us when we did a summer road trip for her brother DS11, but didn’t visit the two schools which would probably be of most interest to her. Our goal is to try to visit some schools on an April spring vacation trip to NYC for her 16th birthday and maybe try to get into Boston to get the feel of colleges in a city. We live near two small liberal arts schools where she’s attended sports camps so she has some ideas of what she likes and doesn’t like in a campus. And she definitely wants a college town feel. We’ll see…
