Parents of the HS Class of 2014

@Mathmomvt, I’ll definitely look around then. My school is a good one, but very few kids go to the states from here, so it makes sense that they won’t offer it. Practice tests are a good idea too, but I tend to be a lot more intense and focused on real tests than I am on practice ones. Still, it’s a good habit to develop!

BTW, I am a girl

@MIMama- what Mathmom said, haha.

@89wahoo. I am (Canada), though I also don’t really care. AP Calc BC was my first AP and while my teacher did a really good job teaching the math, she definitely didn’t teach to the test, which I think held us back somewhat. It’s partially my fault though- I should’ve taken responsibility for myself and studied properly. Whatever, at least if it’s not my desired mark, I can rewrite in 2013. By then I’ll have at least done MV Calc and had a chance to look at old exams.

My test prep thus far has been pretty lackluster, though I am lucky enough to start at a good position. Intellectually stimulating work for 8 hours a day is a lot more tiring than an 8 hour school day! As soon as I get home from work, I just don’t feel like doing anything besides surfing the internet and eating, haha.

I guess I’ll have to get it to eventually though :-/.

^^ sorry ecouter :o

89wahoo~ D’s scores arrived today, we are in north Alabama. I got to open the envelope and then text her the score (only APUSH this year). She is at a youth conference this week and said I could open the envelope but not to tell her unless she got higher than a 3! :)

AP scores arrived in Michigan yesterday. I wonder if the arrival is more dependent on the timing of the tests taken than on the location. D14 took AP US Gov, which was one of the tests in the second week.

On ACT’s facebook page today:

“In the graduating class of 2011, 87% of students taking the ACT found the right college within 80 miles of home. What school nearby might be a good fit for you?”

Should we just quit looking now and go straight for our nearby university??? :)

Hmmmm…wonder if that is the same for the SAT test takers???

I wonder what they mean by “found the right college”. Visited? Applied? Matriculated?

89wahoo: We’re in VA, too. The envelope from AP came today. Son already had called earlier for this score, but it was nice to see it in print.

Meanwhile, Son just got back from distance running camp. A grueling four-day, three-night event. He put in lots of miles, including 10 the final day. Needless to say, he’s a bit sore.

(But he was ready to jump in the car today and head to town to get his learner’s permit.)

He got some not-so-great news regarding his schedule. His counselor called. A schedule conflict will keep him from taking physics this year. He was a little bummed. He got all the other classes he wanted, but may make a switch because he really would like to take a finance class with a particular teacher, who is just outstanding.

As for college shopping, we stopped at a small, liberal arts school on the way home from camp. This was completely unplanned, but Son seemed to like it a bit. He recognized the names of some of the All-American track and field runners from the past. Next week, we’ll make a stop at a North Carolina university en route to visiting my parents in South Carolina.

And somehow, the kid still has lots and lots of summer work for APUSH to do.

Still no AP scores here. I feel justified for having called but I still wish the paper copy would arrive.

No AP scores today, again. They must have one very slow person stuffing, licking, and stamping these envelopes. Glad this supposedly is going online next year. I wonder why it’s not already? S14 is getting oodles of college mail. Not that he’s interested in the schools sending it to him! Wondering how they got his name.
His sister, D13, got back from a leadership camp at her #1 choice tonight. Very clearly loved every minute, save the hot dorm when she was trying to sleep. Passed out cold in her own bed with AC already tonight. She made a ton of friends and it seems to have cemented her decision to apply early and cross every part of her body that she can cross that they like her too. Got to see if S14’s top choice has such a thing next summer. Living on the campus is a good way to really see what the school is like.

Got my son’s AP scores this afternoon. I don’t understand why they don’t just allow you to access this through the college board website.

Can you email their teachers for AP scores? They have had them for over a week… DD14 didn’t get hers in the mail either…

Got 'em last week in Arizona.

DS received his AP scores in the mail yesterday. I’ve heard that next year the scores will be available online for free.

Sorry about the AP scores, 89wahoo. Maybe today? Meanwhile, glad to hear your daughter liked camp and has a top school. Oldest son, soon to be a college senior, never had a No. 1. He had lots of No. 1s. He based much of his decision on good academics and opportunities but limited debt. In his case, a National Merit scholarship has allowed him to attend school with full tuition and honors housing covered (along with other goodies). His kid brother will not be National Merit so he will go in a different direction. The other day, he said that he’s having a tough time wrapping himself around the idea of looking seriously at schools because he’s just 15 and does not know what he wants to do in life. So, as I explained to him, we look for schools with lots of options. One may really grab his interest.

AP envelope waiting for us (in MA) when we got home from the weekend away, so they presumably came on Saturday. S is away for July, but we texted him and he asked us to open them (big relief to me, as D '11/'15 always had us send her the envelope wherever she was and only told us the results later). Nice to have a couple more scores laid down, even if the Physics B is relatively useless and he will probably take the C later on anyway. Maybe next year will be less frantic than I have been fearing.

Took dd14 on her first official college visits last week. She’s been to several schools with ds12, but these were “her” first visits. She’s pretty sure she wants to follow her brother to Colorado College, but she wants the full experience of visiting lots of schools herself.

She thought Bard was okay, but not fabulous, especially when the tour guide said that a lot of people smoked. She LOVED Wesleyan! She thought the academics sounded great, they have her major, she loved the campus architecture and we had a great guide. The look and feel of the library is a make-or-break for her and theirs is a really nice mix of old and new. When the guide was bringing us through the library he was talking about some of their rare books. After a long list of notables, he mentioned that they have a first edition of Winnie-the-Pooh. Sold! She loved it! Plus we found a picture of my grandfather who attended from 1925 in the Athletic Center. Very fun.

Don’t know if we could pay for it, but it’s nice to see her start to figure out what she likes and she knows she needs some safeties and financial matches!

Glad you had some nice visits pacnwmom. I can appreciate that your DD wants to see some schools despite having a favorite already. Students mature a lot over high school so it’s a good idea in case she waivers at all. I’m a hugh A.A. Milne fan so I understand why the first edition Winnie-the-Pooh would grab her interest. So fun that you found the picture of your grandfather as well!! :)

I can’t imagine why the tour guide at Bard would purposely mention that a lot of people smoke. I can’t see that as a selling point for many hs students and their parents.

Glad you had a good tour!

DS and I are going to Washington University in St. Louis on Thursday - they are having an Engineering Day. This will be our first tour, too. Not sure if we’ll visit any others this summer, but would like to get an idea of different types of colleges.

In fairness, the tour guide at Bard was responding to the question “If you could change one thing about Bard, what would it be?” He responded that he wished fewer people smoked.

Have a great visit to Washington University beadymom and beadyson! It will be nice to go to a targeted day for engineering. You should get a lot of info in your son’s area of interest.

Not a parent, but I was wondering how everyone else in the high school class of 2014 is loading up AP classes for this upcoming junior year. And does anyone have a general idea of how competitive the high school class of 2014 will be when it comes to applying to colleges? Are there a lot of amazing students in my class?
