So sorry for your family @lifegarding . Good lesson for all of us. I am bad about using my ATM card for everything. I’m going to grab some cash this afternoon. You’d think that I would’ve learned after having my ATM card eaten twice.
Thanks, @carolinamom2boys. Of course, I stressed all day yesterday about DS’ situation, but within about 2 hours of back/forth texting on key steps he needed to take I never heard from him again. I asked him to call me today so we could go over more of what he needs to do now, and he said he’ll call around 3…so clearly he’s not suffering too badly :).
I think my niece is much more shook up, but in the end, both she and DS are okay and have learned valuable lessons at a minor cost (car repairs for her, lost $$ and replacement expenses for him). Hard that they have to learn them while away from home and family, but in a way I think it’s better because they have to deal with it themselves rather than having us take care of it for them.
It’s good to securely keep a passport in your dorm room to enable you to replace other IDs when wallet it stolen.
Given son does not have a passport he’d be up a creek.
Highly recommend a passport card as a back up ID or primary ID for students without a drivers license. I got both kids one the last time I renewed their passports.
@lifegarding, did your son report the stolen wallet to campus police? Did he ask in lost and found if someone turned in a wallet?
Just got notification that the dorms reopen on Tues at 10:00 and classes resume on Wednesday. I knew that it was coming, but still sad. At least DH will be making this trip to help with the clean up if needed.
Hopefully there is no damage for you DS & the students and school can resume their regular routine.
It will be Thanksgiving before we know it.
I am glad the storm has passed @carolinamom2boys. I hope the cleanup is minimal, if any.
@mommdc I asked him about this when he finally called us yesterday afternoon. The campus lost and found is through the campus police, so he’s going to check with them today and at least this way they will find out that his wallet may have been stolen. He did consider that one of his friends might have accidentally taken it out/dropped it out of the backpack when they were in it getting other stuff out of his bag. At this point, he’s hoping that someone turned in the wallet, even if the cash is lost. I’m hoping he learns that carrying your wallet around in your backpack isn’t a great idea if you don’t keep it on your back the whole time…especially if you’re letting your friends go into your bag.
He seemed to be in good spirits, though - I think some of his friends felt sorry for him and have been loaning him a few $$ until he gets our letter with some emergency funds :).
@carolinamom2boys safe travels back to your DS’ campus later this week - I hope there isn’t too much damage to the dorms or other buildings!
First frost last night, not ready to scrape car every morning…
We had a nice visit with S. H was excited to surprise S with his new beard - but S also has a full beard! He hasn’t shaved since we dropped him off. He seems to be doing well in school, has some friends, and is “fine”. Now that I’ve seen him, I will be better able to stop worrying about the meaning of fine.
@carolinamom2boys hoping the return goes well and nothing is damaged.
@lifegarding hope your S finds his wallet intact. My older D learned the hard way in HS not to keep her money in her backpack as it was stolen that way. At least her ID was not in there.
@psychmomma glad you had a nice visit. I’m sure “fine” is my S’s primary response to most questions.
D is having fun with her friends. She thinks her roommate’s family is hilarious and fun, is enjoying the weather, and especially the bountiful home cooked food. She’s been to a homecoming game, the state fair, a nice church, shopping, and today appears to be the day to experiment with hair color. Roommate’s older sister does hair-lots of the girls have specialties in one type or another of hair care, and this one does coloring. They were researching last night what to do and what products to use. I’m a little nervous, but it’s her money and her hair. They head back to school tomorrow.
How fun! @sseamom This weekend has been relaxing. I’m home until tomorrow morning
For those who uncomfortable for kids to use Uber they offer “follow my Uber trip” option. My DD had to use Uber alone for the first time today and she had Uber to send me this link and I was watching her trip until she got to her destination. This is a free option.
Got to FaceTime with DS today (missed last weekend because he was so busy with work). Was SO nice to see & talk to him. Made my day!!
Enjoy your recharge time @readingclaygirl.
So life is pretty crappy right now. D16 and I had a pretty decent fight at the end of last week. I lost my cool and pretty much said I won’t pay for college if you don’t share your grades with us. All of it was a misunderstanding on my part and a lack of communication on her part. I’m still pretty upset but I just have to let it go. And my cat is really sick right now. It’s just been a craptastic last few days.
Thanks @livinginLA I hope things with D16 improve and your cat gets better
@livinginLA, so sorry for all the stress and discord. We’ve got your back and healing thoughts for your kitty.
