Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Add mine to the list.

Forgot his wireless headphones. Mailed them out yesterday (along with some goodies & pre-finals good luck!)

I loved reading the other stories about items left behind at home - hopefully for most itā€™s a good sign that they were eager to get back to their dorms and rushing for the trip back. Last night DS asked if he left his shaver at home, but didnā€™t dare ask me to buy him a new one or drive it up to him. I told him to wait and it would probably turn upā€¦sure enough he found it today. Iā€™m sure at least theyā€™ve learned a little bit of a lesson about packing carefully before heading back to school, right?

I forgot money. So I had to go to the bank alone for the first time. Well not alone, but without my parents. So that was interesting. Coming back from Columbus Day, one of my friends left her ID at home, 3.5 hours away and didnā€™t realize it until she was unpacking at school

@readingclaygirl, not having cash available is pretty stressful when youā€™re away from home - glad you were able to handle the banking experience! Weā€™re realizing as a family that when DS left for college, sometimes the classes are the most familiar part and everything else is something new to experience and learn.

Our son is a bit stressed about going to a new dentist on his own near his college because heā€™s not quite sure what questions they might ask related to information, family history, and how he can pay for it if the cost is more than what he has in his bank account. And, heā€™s also stressing about the process of signing up for housing next year - having options and trying to coordinate with roommates almost makes it harder than freshman registration, when it was all up to the college to make the assignment.

Are other DS and DD starting the housing request process for next year? At DSā€™ school, students must live on campus for the first two years, but they have several different options and some are harder to reserve than others. Of course DS has his heart set on one place, but watching 4 guys try to coordinate multiple application options and multiple housing arrangements at different prices is not easy. We had to put together a spreadsheet since the costs vary so much. There are two different types of on-campus apartments, one off-campus apartment complex that counts as on-campus housing, traditional dorm room housing, then 2 others that are somewhat in between. The one he wants is more expensive, but offers a full kitchen so its feasible if he drops down to a very limited meal plan and shops/cooks for himself most of the time. Iā€™m curious about what students at other universities have in terms of options/requirements?

My DD is dealing with the whole new dentist thing and next yearā€™s housing too. Her biggest issue with the dentist was dealing with the dental insurance and now after four visits she decided that she wants to find a new dentist so sheā€™ll have to go through the whole insurance thing again. Hopefully it will be easier the second time around.

As for housing, she has some unique needs and really needs a building with an elevator and/or parking garage with decent size bedrooms. That pretty much leaves one off campus apartment option, unfortunately itā€™s a bit on the pricey side (but still less than the dorms!) and has a reputation as a party place so itā€™s been a challenge for D to find three substance free girls (they need a four bedroom to make it affordable) to room with her next year. She thinks she has 3 girls now but they havenā€™t all met each other yet. The are going to get together later this week, hopefully it all works out and they can all agree to room together.

As for banking DD has been dealing with her own banking since she was young, when she started working as a motherā€™s helper and doing babysitting, sheā€™s had a teen checking account, savings account and debit card since she was 13. She also opened an account at the college savings union to keep track of scholarship money and so itā€™s not ā€˜commingledā€™ with her personal funds.

Sā€™s on-campus housing opened Nov. 1 for next year. He put it off for a while but finally reserved a spot in a new dorm. The next day, 3 friends brought up an apartment - but at $800/person. Way higher than our older two ever paid, and this is in a college town where there are plenty of cheaper places. He decided to stay with the dorm, but has 10 more days to cancel the dorm contract if he changes his mind. I hate that sign up is so early. The kids have barely made s few friends and theyā€™re expected to commit a year in advance.

I agree @psychmomma. My D16 has to do the same thing. I think itā€™s crazy to think that a freshman would know where to live the next year with only two and a half months under your belt.

My D got her wisdom teeth out before college. I schedule her dentist checkups for December and June when she is home. She has a copy of all insurance cards.

She has a CC for emergencies and I can also add money to her debit card immediately and she can get cash from the ATM.

I agree, freshman housing was easy. You put down choices in order of preference.

At Dā€™s school housing deposit and contract is due by Feb 1 I think to keep housing guarantee (3 years).
Dā€™s freshman rommate was transferring somewhere else, but she applied with 3 other girls for an on campus apartment. She had a low lottery number and they were fortunate that they got it.

This year they have the option to retain their apartment for junior year.

@lifegarding On campus housing is pretty desirable at DDā€™s school. For her sophomore year isnā€™t guaranteed. Of course this does not mean that she has any type of back-up plan if she does not get a room. Housing surrounding the school is pretty pricey as well. I am not sure if we would have any savings if she lived off campus.

Glad to see so many of you still posting here.

How many have a 2017 kid?

Nope 2019.

Nope, 2018 and 2020:-)

Sā€™18 and Dā€™23

DS16 still has local news app on his phone. Today, we had a tornado warning , and in the midst of getting my dog, my neighbors and DS19 into the basement , my phone blew up with a text from DS16 saying " Get in the basement thereā€™s a tornado coming ." I guess itā€™s the Eagle Scout in him

Glad you were not caught in a tornado @carolinamom2boys ! My D also follows local news and will call to see if weā€™re ok after a windstorm or some other newsworthy event. She also gets concerned if she calls and weā€™re out and about when she thinks we should be home!

We wonā€™t need to pick a dorm until the end of March. D will have the option of an all-girls dorm or a co-ed one. She and her roommate are already planning to room together next year and in the single-sex dorm. There is housing enough for all students for all four years of school, so no one is thinking of living off-campus only 1 semester in. With many of her education classes at night, though, weā€™re definitely asking about a smaller meal plan for next year!

Iā€™m glad my S doesnā€™t have to worry about housing until the spring! Virtually all students live on campus all 4 years, but itā€™s the coordination thatā€™s tough! Iā€™m happy with the meal plan, though ā€“ food is great, and they have a scaled-down menu from 8-11 p.m., which works well for after practice. Honestly, Iā€™d rather have him eating at the dorm than cooking his own food. Which is the opposite of how I thought of it for my D! She just makes healthier food. And didnā€™t have the time sink of varsity sports.

I have a D18.

@mommdc When do they get the lottery numbers for housing for next year? S has no idea, but isnā€™t really concerned. He wants to stay where he is, but I think an on campus apt would be better to give him more flexibility with meals. The only problem with an apt is that heā€™d probably need a single as all his friends are female and most of them are applying to be RAs.

We have a DS 20 and a DS 25.

@sseamom What is it with night education classes? Iā€™m in the same boat next semester. As for housing, thereā€™s enough for everyone and if I donā€™t get in honors housing, Iā€™ll stay with my roommate. And we donā€™t do it until March anyway

S19 here tooā€¦completely different kidā€¦have to start spending more time in that parentā€™s thread.
