@dbjs70 Be prepared , it’s not the same.
@RyanG1207, the lottery numbers should come out in January.
I have a S19 and a D21. @carolinamom2boys, I have high hopes for the '19 Thread with many of us continuing there. It will take off next fall, I bet. :x
@carolinamom2boys - ugh…that does not sound good…
@readingclaygirl at D’s school it’s because some of the profs are also teachers or involved with working schools in some way, and also that some of the students are people who work days but are getting certified as teachers as a new career. D has some people in their 30’s in her classes.
@sseamom I dont really know why mine are.
They probably needed more classes to meet the student need , but had to work around other classes @readingclaygirl
@psychmomma Our D13 was in ISR her first year at UIUC and is off-campus this year. She and her first year roommate share a bedroom in a two-floor multi-bedroom building, furnished, and newly remodeled and designed for students.
She is paying about $500 a month, plus food. She says she is saving money over the room and board dorm price she paid last year and enjoys the living arrangement. She did not know any of the other people, except her roommate before signing the lease. They “met” everyone on some housing board or FB thing, as a group of engineering students were looking to fill rooms and satisfy the lease of the building & they jumped in and took one of the rooms.
There are little petty living together complaints she has, but nothing major. I was so surprised by how nice the building was.
Our D16 has already put down a housing deposit for next year. Housing applications opened up November 1. She is lucky in that she and her roommate want to live together again next year and agreed on the type of room they wanted. It has got to be hard if you don’t have a roommate yet for sophomore year.
@texaspg No other babies. We have a D13 who graduates in May, and a D16.
@readingclaygirl , @sseamom they often put ed classes at night 1-to free the faculty up to do observations of student teachers; and 2-to make it easier for the students to schedule observations in the schools. As many ed classes require students to spend time observing classrooms-- it’s much easier if you have a large block of time during the day to allow for that. My older D’s teacher ed program actually held classes during the day in a local K-12 school- so they could go to class 1/2 day and then do observations and teaching the remainder of the day.
@texaspg My D16 is my youngest so no more admissions in my future.
S16 is my youngest, too. Older two are out in the working world.
Hearing good news from DS16 which makes for a good weekend - the pain in his gums near his wisdom tooth is finally gone so he can eat again, and it looks like he and his friends signed up in time to get the 10-month apartment they’d been hoping for (vs. a 12-month and larger unit which would have run us about $1,500 more than we wanted to pay). I was proud of him for taking care of all the details so quickly to ensure a spot…usually he puts it off or asks me to take care of it, but I guess our repeated “you’re an adult now, you can do this own your own” is finally sinking in.
I can’t believe how quickly the first semester has flown by…most of our kids will be home in about 2 weeks, right? We have one more at home D18 who is just starting her college search.
@midwest67 @livinginLA - I have a 2012 who started grad school this year and so did many others’ kids from that group. I expect both of you to be in graduate school forums.
Thanks! I am guessing I will not be there for D13, as she looking forward to joining the working world, living on her own and making her way (and staying out of school for awhile, maybe forever).
D16? I can totally see her marching right on to grad school.
Great news @lifegarding ! They have grown up a bit, haven’t they?
Wrapping party has commenced here since my online shopping has been arriving all week. Gotta get those cards addressed and out as well. Office Christmas party is tonight. I enjoy the nice dinner but have no interest in the dancing. Some are planning to stay really late and have booked hotel rooms closeby so that they can sleep in and not worry about getting up with small children. Those days seem long ago to me. I would rather come home at a reasonable hour and do my normal Sunday morning and then work on my holiday stuff.
S16 is my last also. D14 will most likely be graduating a semester early, so Dec. 2017. She will be spending next fall/early winter applying to grad school most likely, so good to know there are grad school forums as well @texaspg. That is uncharted territory for this family.
Both S16 and D14 will be flying home together from Boston a few days before Christmas.
D16 is our youngest. She plans to hit the workforce right after the graduation. With her intended major grad school is not necessarily. Nor we can afford it.
Counting days until her winter break. She will be home for six weeks. I am so glad she choose to do winter externship here locally. For summer we probably will not be so lucky since she is actively looking for internships up north.
I don’t get a Christmas party at work-it’s our busiest time! And H’s is only for employees and it’s during the day. But they ARE sending him to NYC for the next few days and he’s excited about that. D gets in 24 hours after he lands, so I’ll be seeing a lot of the airport this coming week.
She’s already got her “first two Master’s” degrees picked, though I’m sure that could change. She’ll be needing to finance those on her own. She’ll be home for a month this winter, but is already applying to summer programs nowhere near Seattle.
She is my last by a long shot. My S was HS Class of 2003 and my older D was Class of 2008. I am an old mom no matter how you look at it.
My twin sister and I are the only kids- if you don’t count our dog. But I’m going to most likely be in school the longest b/c I am getting my masters and I don’t know if my sister is going past her AA. Which is 100% ok.
