Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Things are also moving forward for my D. She has registered for the final semester and will be part time, only taking two classes to fulfill her last requirements. My pocketbook is happy about that. She has also registered for graduation, and she has officially accepted her job offer from her summer internship. She is all set and do ready to move on. Now she’s looking for a part time waitressing job for the spring to keep herself busy.

After seriously flirting with an early job offer last month, our S has decided to invest another year and get his masters. Was a tough decision because the offer checked all the boxes.

Our kid has had a bumpy senior year so far. I don’t get the play by play, which is probably a good thing.

She keeps me at arms length, but the little news I do get is…bumpy.

Of course, she will need to figure things out, in her own way.

And I need to continue to figure out my role as she is almost, but not quite, independent.

She is busy filling out grad school applications and it’s a sore subject bc she is anxious, plus she wants me to stay out of the decision (since she feels I forced her school on her re: UG).

Parenting is not for sissies!

We just made hotel reservations for graduation. Nice!

DS16 finally has his work scedume for week of Thanksgiving and he will make it for a couple of days!!! Looking forward to seeing him.

@Midwest67 I could have written your note about our D16! Little bit bumpy senior year and too much stress, way too much stress. She too is prepping for grad school applications and prepping for the GREs. I’m ready (as is she) for the stress in her life to be less. It’s been such a long haul of stress: 4 years of high school stress and now 4 years of UG stress. I rather worry though that graduate school will also be stressful. I guess that was my life too at that age but now well into my middle age, I’m enjoying a more relaxed life and seeing my kids stressed out does not make me happy.

@liska21

Our kid ended up taking the GRE 2x. She was devastated by her scores the first time & pleased with her scores the second time.

It is hard to see them struggling, stressed out, & unhappy. I keep telling myself they need to make their own mistakes & find their own way.

2 things helped me a lot — having no kids living at home. The one still at university stays there over the summer and is only home for visits. That way, I am not caught up in the daily ups & downs & moods. It always had a big effect on me & I struggled to get some air, or distance.

The other thing that helped so much was my therapist. She has retired now and I did not get a replacement. She was gold.
She really helped me navigate this next stage.

We’re enjoying time at home with S. Lot’s going on to enjoy; watching D’s soccer games, movies, shopping and meals together. He is taking time out to work on some projects and trying to decide on which summer internship offer to accept. Great having him home.

DS16 is home AND he has a job offer he is really excited about!!! Lots to be grateful for this year.

Our DD16 was accepted to her DPT program in December. She is attending the same school as her undergrad. She took an atypical if not unheard of route as she was a BA Dance major as an undergrad. She had lots of good experiences. She was able to be an undergrad teaching assistant for both Anatomy and Physiology and has been doing paid research over the summer and her 19/20 school year. She won’t have much time to celebrate as she graduates the beginning of May and will start her DPT program May 18th. Time has flown by!

Daughter graduated Dec 13 with a job offer but now has an issue with the school and your child may have a similar issue. The University says they can’t provide degree verification to employers until 6 weeks after graduation. She was suppose to start this upcoming Monday. If she had known, she would have set her starting date as Feb 3. Something to find out about your child’s university and how they handle graduation verification for employers.

So sorry to hear of this problem. My DS16’s future employer has encouraged a start date almost 6 weeks from graduation and we suspect this is the reason. It appears all employees start on the 1st of a month and the less than 2 week window from graduation to 6/1 is not enough time to get his “paperwork” in order. It does give him more time to relocate but it is a bit too much time so it is frustrating.

Wow, can y.all believe from are pulling into port already? Graduation Island is on the horizon!

Yes, graduation is coming up for many! Very excited to see DS16 embark on the next part of his journey!!

This cruise sure has flown by! It is exciting all of our DS/DD are almost finished (if they have not already graduated early)

My DS is home until Tuesday. He has a very light load his final semester and has stayed home to continue to recuperate. He had a pretty serious car accident in December on the way home from school. Swerved to miss a skunk, lost control, took out a fence, rolled and hit a tree. He definitely had angels looking over him, as he came away with a lot of bumps & bruises and a bruised lung. So glad he had the time home to heal.

At this point, DS will be catching another cruise for grad school- looking forward to see where he ends up!

Here’s to a great 2020 for all.

(btw- if anyone was wondering- this is old bookmom7 but, I was too impatient to figure out the new log in when it all happened- I had used facebook & had no earthly idea what my passwords were, etc…)

Yeah, really hard to believe that DS is about to start her last semester!

@bookmom62

I’m so glad your son is okay! Yikes!

Our D has submitted her grad school applications and has already had 2 short interviews via Skype.

She hit essay and application fatigue and shortened her application list quite a bit.

But, her ultimate short list was very good, IMO. Decent acceptance rates and possibility of some $$.

I really hope she is content with her next step & where it takes her. Just want to see her happy!

Well.

Decisions & offers are coming in for grad school & we are doing a spreadsheet — doing our best to come up with a total COA for her 2 year program.

So far, I feel DUMB and like I’m on a scavenger hunt! We are not finding the costs to be straightforward/transparent. Is that grad assistantship for one year…? Can it be renewed…? Wait…there’s a service component to that grant?

Perhaps more detailed info is on its way? Let there be light.

How is everyone?

Good luck with that spreadsheet! I do not envy you a bit as I think you are experiencing what undergrad offers were like before recent (imperfect) efforts to make info more standardized.

@Cheeringsection

Thank you for confirming what I was thinking!

May the Force be with us! :wink:
