Hopefully I didn’t miss any updates! I double checked PM’s today. If I missed something from a post (and didn’t already have your students stats) I am very very sorry, just let me know!

Exciting update, we have our first EA deferral acceptance in the RD round!

I appreciate everyone sharing all the news, both the good and the bad and the meh.

I’ve been following this thread, meaning to post our story but hadn’t yet. But now we have exciting news and I figured better late than never. My daughter’s situation is somewhat unusual (maybe?) and difficult to assess when applying to college. She had a really rough middle school experience that carried over into freshman year (which was a continuation of her middle school). She’s very smart but had a combination of very real personal issues come up and then intense school anxiety that she developed as a result. After barely attending school, she basically failed freshman year with I think an A in one class. Her GPA on a scale of 100 was literally a 45. For sophomore year she transferred to a small, alternative school that is just amazing. It doesn’t have honors or AP’s or standardized tests. Instead, it has college style seminar classes that go in depth into subjects and it has a series of “proficiency” requirements for graduation. She took enough credits to still graduate on time in 4 years, but it meant that she also had only 2 years there to balance out the freshman GPA before applying to colleges. But her self-confidence had taken a real beating and her grades were still uneven - A’s and high B’s in social studies and humanities and low B’s, some C’s and even an F in science and math. To add to this complex situation, once the personal and school situations cleared a little and she was in a more supportive environment, we were able to realize that she showed signs of ADHD and get her tested. She was diagnosed at the very end of junior year. Since then, her first semester senior year grades shot up to straight A’s, but that didn’t factor into her college applications - other than in the midterm report and recommendations.

So, at application time, she had a 2.3 GPA overall (barely) and a 3.0 (almost 3.3) at her current school. A sharp upward trajectory but uneven - and the numbers on the face of it are pretty bad. But we also knew she could succeed and would do best in a small, liberal arts college - and they were the most likely to look beyond grades. She had great recommendations and an amazing essay and writing supplements. Seriously, her essay was off the charts. I know I’m biased but I feel pretty confident in that. In addition, we are low income and she has a pretty compelling story (that I don’t want to share for privacy reasons as it would definitely be a give away). So we all advised her to shoot for some really great places. At the same time, we thought it was entirely possible - and we had to explain this to her - that she might not get in anywhere and would have to either stay in HS another year to pull up her GPA or go to community college and transfer. We also can’t afford to send her anywhere that won’t give her almost full financial aid (after loans and work-study). So it was a tough road.

She worked harder on the college application process, and with less chance of reward, than I’ve ever seen her do. She had a ton of supplements to do and she worked ridiculously hard on them. In the end, she applied to Eugene Lang, several SUNY’s, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, Knox, Earlham and Goucher. In November she got into a SUNY, which was a huge relief because it meant that she had somewhere to go, but it was definitely not a first choice. Hampshire was her dream school, but her stats are well below their average - though not unheard of. She ended up applying ED 2 and just poured everything into it. Her supplements were really strong. Her self-assessment was honest, clear-sighted and very compelling. Her hypothetical research project was fascinating and really well researched and showed how much she understood about Hampshire and the topic. And in general I think her application really showed who she was. Worth saying she basically has zero ec’s - life itself and just getting to this point took all her time. But she does have very deep interests and I think those came through. She visited the campus twice and sat in on 2 classes and a campus lecture.

Anyways, that became a long saga, but the end story is that we found out this week that she got accepted to Hampshire and will be attending there in the fall. This whole stressful process is over! She is super-excited and so are we. I really think it’s a perfect place for her in its own particularly unique way. She is very lucky that a place that claims to look at the whole person and want a very specific kind of student is the place that she wanted to be. I have to believe that they really did deliver on their promise of holistic admissions and assessing the whole application for qualities they seek in a student. I admit to being impressed by this. I’m also finding through this thread that once you get below the very tippy top tier of schools, there is a lot of room for kids who don’t have the perfect grades but are wonderful people and interesting students. And there is more room for you to make your application speak beyond grades than is commonly acknowledged. I am grateful for everything I learned on this board and on this thread and the perspective I was able to get and then provide for my daughter. I am looking forward to seeing the paths taken by all your kids.

Wow! I am so happy for your family. I went through a very similar experience. I was diagnosed with ADHD in elementary school, but still struggled all through middle school and high school, and even through my first years of college. Education was a very hard thing for me because my ADHD and because no one motivated me to work hard. I’m so glad she has an amazing support system. ADHD and self confidence are a very hard thing to deal with, especially when it comes to education, but I promise you that if you can keep her motivated and put her health first through college, she will succeed. My first years of college were rocky until I transferred to an amazing university that supported me and I went from having a 2.4 GPA to having a 3.9 GPA in college! Also make sure she applies for disability services. Every college has disability services that can help students with ADHD. It helped me a great deal. I took exams in a quiet room, I got extra time and materials for exams (depending), and I was exempt from taking a language requirement. So just make sure she applies for disability services soon as the process can take 3-5 months depending on the school. It took me 4 months to get everything worked out with the doctor paperwork and such.

@hipmama, thank you for sharing your D’s story. It made me cry.

I am so happy that she was accepted at Hampshire!

I am sure that she is so much stronger because of her struggles and being able to persevere!

@hipmama Great news about Hampshire!!! Congrats!

@hipmama what a wonderful result! How wonderful that you were not only able to get her into a positive environment but keep working at the overall issues, continue improving her self confidence and target really great fits for her, for college.

Congratulations on Hampshire! It sounds like a perfect fit.

@hipmama congratulations! Sounds like whatever your D went through she had/has great support. I know what you mean about the self-esteem. So glad she gave it her all.

Good news here–S17 was admitted to Washington State University, with full tuition 4 year scholarship (with a chance for more). It’s engineering department is rated as tied with Oregon State and Colorado State, but I don’t think he’ll get nearly the money those schools. We haven’t visited yet, but this is likely the best financial option.

That’s an impressive result, @Hankster1361 – Congrats to your son on his award… that’s a terrific recognition of his hard work!

wow @Hankster1361 I didn’t even realize WSU offered a full tuition scholarship. Solid engineering school, I know some very successful graduates. WSU is doing a lot to win students and kids seem very happy there. Not quite the college town of the others (ok not even close) but wow, you cannot beat the price. We know several kids likely headed there next year.

Congrats!

Congrats to your D @hipmama! Your story and the happy ending truly made my day!!!

@hipmama -

My friend’s D went to Hampshire from an alternative lab type HS in NYC and loved it. After taking a few years off, she is now in law school. Her mom is a lawyer. NY has some very nice alternative HS’s. My oldest son attended one and we know several students who attended a portfolio type alternative school in a nearby district. I hope that your D enjoys Hampshire as much as my friend’s D did.

Congrats to @hipmama (great story) and @Hankster1361 I personally like Pullman and if your son likes the outdoors, it’s a very nice place.

For the record, I am not saying I dislike pullman lol, just that it doesn’t compare to Fort Collins or Corvallis in my opinion. Though, to be fair, there is Husky bias present so take it with a grain of salt. Heck if I could get my kids to consider it, I would!
